Marcus Pettersson, Drew O’Connor Traded To Vancouver

According to Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff.com, the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman Marcus Pettersson and left wing Drew O'Connor to the Vancouver Canucks. The Penguins received Danton Heinen, Vinny Desharnais, and Melvin Fernstrom and a conditional first-round selection in exchange. Pettersson has been a reliable top-four defenseman during his tenure in Pittsburgh. He joined Pittsburgh in 2018 via a trade from the Anaheim Ducks. From 2019 through 2024, Pettersson made 385 starts and tallied 122 points, a +55 rating, 590 hits, and 570 blocked shots. This season, Pettersson tallied 18 points (three goals, 15 helpers) with 83 blocks. Drew O'Connor has spent his entire career with Pittsburgh and has shown flashes at times but has struggled to produce on a consistent basis. He tallied a career-best 33 points with 16 goals. However, this season, he has scored just six goals with 16 total points. Pettersson will have a top role in the Vancouver defense, while O'Connor should have a spot on the third line.

Marcus Pettersson Considered Week-To-Week

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson (lower body) is considered week-to-week. He was hurt in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa and must spend some time on the sidelines after so far featuring in all 32 games. Pettersson is valued for his two-way ability and has done a little bit of everything for the Penguins. The 28-year-old boasts 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) and has recorded 32 shots, 56 blocks, and 36 hits. Matt Grzelcyk is slated to play a larger role in the Penguins defense with Pettersson out of commission. In Monday's practice, he skated with Erik Karlsson on the second defensive pairing. Pittsburgh returns to game action on Tuesday versus Los Angeles.

Marcus Pettersson Placed On Long-Term Injured Reserve

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson (lower body) was placed on long-term Injured Reserve on Monday. He was injured Saturday against the Rangers and the move is retroactive to the game. The injury bug has hassled the Penguins blue line throughout the season and Pettersson is the latest victim. The 26-year-old has recorded 130 hits and 130 blocks, while also helping out at times on the offensive end, producing 24 points in 67 games. With Jeff Petry (upper body) still out as well, the likes of Kris Letang and Brian Dumoulin are set for a very busy night Monday versus Ottawa. Meanwhile, Pierre-Olivier Joseph will replace Pettersson as Letang's partner on the first defensive pairing.

Marcus Pettersson Available Again Monday

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson (illness) will be back in the lineup Monday against Anaheim. He has recovered from a non-COVID illness that forced Pettersson to miss two games. The 26-year-old will be teaming up with Jan Rutta on the second defensive pairing. Pettersson is without a goal through 40 games this season but has registered 11 assists and boasts 52 shots on goal with 78 hits and 84 blocks. It's been a decent season for the Swedish blue-liner, but Pettersson definitely can't be happy with his current run of one point in 19 games.

Marcus Pettersson Remains Out On Saturday

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson (illness) didn't travel with the team and will miss a second consecutive game Saturday against Carolina. He has been struck down by an illness and it will take a bit of time until Pettersson is game-ready again. His next chance to return comes on Monday versus Anaheim. The Swedish blue-liner has had a solid campaign with 11 points, 52 shots, 78 hits and 84 blocks in 40 outings. He has skated on the first defensive pairing, averaging nearly 21 minutes of ice time per game. The Penguins blue line has been badly hit by injuries lately and it's resulted in Ty Smith getting a huge role and skating on the first power-play unit. Brian Dumoulin has also just logged a season-high 23:04 of ice time in Friday's 4-1 loss to Winnipeg.

Marcus Pettersson A Game-Time Call Thursday

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson (undisclosed) is regarded as a game-time decision for Thursday's clash with Vegas. He missed Wednesday's practice for maintenance but was on the ice Thursday morning, so it looks like there's a decent chance that Pettersson will be able to stay in the lineup, although we won't know for sure until it's game time. Losing Pettersson would be a further blow for the Penguins blue line, as Kris Letang (personal/lower body) has already been out of the lineup for a couple of games. With Letang unavailable, Pettersson played a massive part in Monday's Winter Classic against Boston, logging 25:56 of ice time. He should play a key role again Thursday if he is able to play. The Swedish blue-liner boasts 11 points in 37 games for the campaign with 47 shots, 76 hits, 76 blocks and a plus-11 rating.

Marcus Pettersson Leaves Ice For Pittsburgh After Apparent Injury

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson left the ice early in Thursday night's game against the Florida Panthers. He did not return for the start of the second period. Pettersson was enjoying a decent start to the 2021-22 season as a bottom-pairing defender with four points in eight games. He has been one of Pittsburgh's better possession defenders with a Corsi-For of 56%. Further news awaits but the video showed Pettersson going to the locker room right after his last shift.

Marcus Pettersson, Chad Ruhwedel Return For Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel will be back in the lineup on Thursday against Florida after missing some time because of the NHL's COVID-19 protocols. Pettersson will skate on the second defensive pairing with John Marino, and Ruhwedel joins Mark Friedman on the third pairing. The COVID cases are finally clearing for the Penguins and now only Sidney Crosby and Brian Dumoulin remain unavailable. Both are close to finishing their isolation periods and should be back in action soon.

Juuso Riikola, Marcus Pettersson Out For Penguins On Friday

Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Juuso Riikola and Marcus Pettersson will miss Friday's matchup against the Rangers, as both players are dealing with upper-body issues. Pettersson is labeled week-to-week, while Riikola is set for a long-term absence. Pierre-Olivier Joseph has been recalled from the taxi squad and he's set to make his NHL debut. The 21-year-old posted 17 points in 54 games in the AHL last season. Cody Ceci is expected to slot back into the lineup as well. With Mike Matheson (upper body) also out, the Pens already have a defensive crisis just a few games into the season.
