Mathew Barzal Scratched on Thursday for Disciplinary Reasons

New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal will be a healthy scratch on Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes. Islanders head coach Patrick Roy announced that he will bench Barzal after he was late to the rink on Thursday morning. Currently, Barzal is tied for second in scoring on the Islanders squad with eight points (two goals, six assists) in nine games. Calum Ritchie will come into the lineup as Barzal's replacement, making his NHL debut. He has tallied one goal and two assists in three AHL outings this season.

Mathew Barzal Good to Go for Season Opener

New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal (kneecap) told reporters at the NHL/NHLPA player media tour that he is ready for the start of the season. Barzal's 2024-25 campaign ended in early February when he injured his kneecap and underwent surgery. While he feels ready to play again, Barzal acknowledged that he may never return to full health. "Injuries like this, you potentially never feel back at 100%," Barzal said. "But mentally, I'm at a point now where it doesn't really matter. If I'm feeling great, if maybe one day I'm a little sore or whatever, it is what it is." Barzal was a point-per-game player just a couple of seasons ago, and it will be interesting to see how he performs following his knee injury.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports that the Islanders star had a minor procedure on his injured kneecap on Thursday. Barzal has been sidelined for the past four games. He also missed time with an upper-body injury earlier in the campaign and has skated in only 30 games this term. There are six goals and 14 assists on Barzal's account. Anthony Duclair has taken on Barzal's duties on the first line and the first power-play unit. However, Duclair has been a disappointment for fantasy managers. He is on a seven-game scoring drought and has notched only eight points (four goals, four assists) in 26 games for the season.

Barzal suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Islanders star also missed time with an upper-body injury earlier in the season. He has skated in only 30 games, recording six goals and 20 points. Anthony Duclair skated on the first line instead of Barzal on Sunday against the Florida Panthers. His struggles this season continued, as Duclair went scoreless in a 6-3 loss without registering any shots on goal.
