Semyon Varlamov to Start Skating Next Week

New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov (knee) is expected to start skating next week. The 37-year-old made only 10 appearances in 2024-25, undergoing season-ending surgery in December. The fact that Varlamov is ready to start skating again suggests that he might be available for the beginning of the new campaign. Varlamov has been a great servant for the Islanders, but he may see very little action even if he's back at 100 percent. This summer, the Islanders signed David Rittich to provide additional backup for Ilya Sorokin.

This campaign ended very early for Varlamov, who is recovering from a knee procedure he underwent in December. Despite receiving an increased workload due to Varlamov's injury, Sorokin has heated up with five consecutive wins. He will look to extend his winning run on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Sorokin hasn't won six appearances in a row since March 2021.

It's going to be his first outing since Varlamov bagged his second shutout of the season against Winnipeg on Feb. 26. Ilya Sorokin has since then gone 3-0-1, but the Islanders No. 1 is getting a rest day against the Capitals. Varlamov, who started his NHL career with Washington all the way back in 2008-09, has put together a decent 11-7-3 record this season, allowing 2.68 goals per game with a .914 save percentage. The Capitals have dropped nine of their last 12 games, so Varlamov finds himself in a good position to pick up another win.
