Drake Maye Fantasy Impact
Drake Maye was the third quarterback selected from the 2024 NFL draft behind Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. In my opinion, his landing spot is still good as the New England Patriots are turning the page after moving on from Hall Of Fame coach Bill Belichick and bust quarterback Mac Jones. The Patriots also retooled the wide receiver corp by adding two more receivers from the draft in Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. But there seems to be a plan in place or at least was mentioned earlier in the offseason of possibly allowing journeyman quarterback Jacoby Brissett to at least take the reigns to start the season. Should this be the case, this could hinder Maye’s short-term fantasy value in redraft leagues. In terms of overall quarterback play, he did go high in the draft for a reason.
Fantasy Value
Maye is a mobile quarterback with an overall great arm. His pocket awareness and poise are some of the best attributes that made Maye one of the more talked about quarterbacks heading into the draft. Maye has all the makings of a franchise quarterback but it will depend on how the Patriots plan to use him. Maye’s fantasy value will still have him coming behind Caleb Williams and Jayden McDaniels in most formats as they offer more upside in passing or mobility. That doesn’t mean that fantasy managers should shrink should Maye be available for them to take. Aside from the rookie receivers the Patriots brought in through the draft, K.J. Osborn and Kendrick Bourne are viable deep threats for Maye to throw the ball. They also have Hunter Henry at tight end to bail him out. Rhamondre Stevenson didn’t go anywhere either but he’s working his way back from a knee injury he suffered last year. Maye certainly has the building blocks to produce even in his rookie season should he win the quarterback camp battle against Jacoby Brissett.
Dynasty Value
As I stated, Drake Maye will likely come off rookie draft boards as the third quarterback selected. Caleb Williams should be the number one quarterback because of his superior passing skills. Jayden McDaniel also has great passing skills but edges Williams and Maye out with his rushing ability. All three quarterbacks are mobile and able to strike with their feet but Daniels is far superior in this area than either Williams or Maye. But I’m not saying all of that to say that Maye is a slouch. Maye totaled 45 touchdowns (pass/rush) during his final year in North Carolina and threw for over 4,300 yards. Maye can deliver the ball in every area on the field and with the options he has on the team, Maye is built to have success. Dynasty managers should be looking to target Maye when Williams and McDaniels are off the board. Maye is still considered the third-best quarterback in rookie rankings and is ranked 10th overall in rookie rankings
Conclusion
Drake Maye has the tools to be a franchise quarterback in the league. We’re all waiting to see what the Patriots will do with Maye during the offseason. That will change the scope of his fantasy value in Redraft leagues. If Maye is forced to wait, Maye could be worth a stash play later on in the draft in redraft leagues. Maye could also be a popular waiver wire add should he get the start later in the season. In Dynasty formats, managers should be looking to add Maye if they are picking outside of the top 7. There is a lot of talent in this year’s rookie draft so you may be able to get him slightly later in the draft. Personally, if he’s there after 10, I’m moving up to get him. I don’t think he makes it out of the first round of rookie drafts. So if that’s your guy, make sure you get him.
