Carson Benge Could be Mets' Opening Day Center Fielder

The New York Mets' trade of long-time outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers might have cleared a lane for outfield prospect Carson Benge to become the team's starting center fielder on Opening Day in 2026, according to Sam Dykstra of MLB.com. Benge, the team's No. 2 prospect and the No. 21 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, climbed three levels in the minors in his first full season in 2025. He has a real shot to not only make the big-league roster out of spring training, but also win starting center-field duties now that Nimmo is gone. The 22-year-old was drafted 19th overall in 2024 as a two-way player out of Oklahoma State. Benge has since become a full-time outfielder and hit .281/.385/.472 with 15 homers and 22 steals in 116 games over three minor-league levels. Benge has great bat-to-ball skills, developing power, and above-average speed. His primary competition in center field in spring training will be with Tyrone Taylor.

Carson Benge has a Shot to Win Opening Day Roster Spot

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge "is going to come into spring training with a chance to make our team," president of baseball operations David Stearns said at the GM meetings in Las Vegas on Tuesday, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Per MLB Pipeline, Benge is considered the team's No. 2 prospect, behind only pitcher Nolan McLean. The 22-year-old was the 19th overall pick in 2024 out of Oklahoma State, and he impressed at High-A Brooklyn, Double-A Binghamton, and Triple-A Syracuse this year by hitting .281 (124-for-441) with 15 long balls, 73 RBI, 87 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases in 116 total games. However, Benge struggled with a .583 OPS at Syracuse, so fantasy managers might want to pump the brakes on the left-handed hitter contributing right away at the big-league level in 2026.

Carson Benge Named Mets Minor-League Player of the Year

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge was named the organization's minor league Player of the Year on Monday. The Mets' top-ranked prospect had a strong year that began at High-A and ended at Triple-A. He slashed .308/.413/.513 with 12 home runs and 19 steals in 92 games between High-A and Double-A, although Triple-A proved a bit more challenging. The 2024 first-rounder hit safely in seven of his first 11 games at that level, but is just 1-for-28 (.036) over his last seven games. There was some momentum that seemed to give hope to a potential 2025 MLB debut, but at this point in the season, he's basically run out of time, at least in terms of fantasy. Look for a 2026 debut, and he should bring solid hit, power, and run tools to the big leagues once he gets there.

Carson Benge Launches First Triple-A Home Run

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge hit his first Triple-A home run on Friday evening, facing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Benge was sidelined for most of the week on the Triple-A IL but wasted little time to make an impact in his return. In just his second game back from the IL and only sixth game with Triple-A Syracuse, Benge went 1-for-4 with his first Triple-A round-tripper. The former 19th overall pick from last year's MLB Draft opened the season at High-A but has progressed through the pipeline very quickly. Through 92 games split between High-A and Double-A, Benge posted an impressive .309/.418/.507 line with a .925 OPS and 11 home runs. Given his impressive progression through the minor leagues, Benge may have an opportunity to join the Mets for their postseason run.

Carson Benge Hits Triple-A Injured List

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge (hand) was placed on the 7-day injured list on August 16, a day after getting hit in the hand by a pitch during a game at Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets' top-ranked prospect earned a promotion to Syracuse after slashing .308/.413/.513 with 12 home runs and 19 steals in 92 games between High-A and Double-A. The 2024 first-rounder was playing in just his fourth game at Triple-A when the injury occurred, and likely puts an MLB debut on ice until 2026. The 22-year-old offers solid hit, power, and run tools, so he is a prospect worth stashing in dynasty formats.

Carson Benge Moving up to Triple-A

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday evening. Benge has enjoyed an impressive campaign at both High-A and Double-A and is being rewarded with yet another in-season promotion. Benge opened the campaign by making his High-A debut and wasted little time, posting a .302/.417/.480 line with a .897 OPS and four home runs through a 60-game stint. He was then bumped up to Double-A, where he posted a strong .317/.407/.571 across a 32-game stint. During this stretch, Benge posted an impressive .978 OPS and went deep eight times. Fantasy managers should continue to keep a close eye on the former 19th overall pick from last year's MLB Draft, as he could have an outside chance of joining the Mets during the final weeks of the regular season.

Carson Benge Collects Three Hits, Drives in Three

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored on Tuesday for Double-A Binghamton. The Mets' third-ranked prospect was promoted to Double-A a couple of weeks ago and has gone 11-for-37 (.297) with three extra-base hits (one home run), two steals, and an impressive 9:6 BB:K through 11 games for the Rumble Ponies. Overall, he's compiled a .302/.420/.473 slash line with five home runs, 17 steals, and nearly as many walks (50) as strikeouts (56) in 71 games. With a strong showing over the remainder of the season, the 2024 first-rounder should see time at Triple-A next year and could be knocking on the door to the majors later in 2026.

Carson Benge Promoted to Double-A Binghamton

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge is getting promoted to Double-A Binghamton. The 2024 first-round draft pick spent the first half of the season at High-A Brooklyn, amassing a .302/.417/.480 slash line, including four home runs with a South Atlantic League-leading 18 doubles and five triples. A better-than-average 18.5 percent strikeout rate was paired with an impressive 15.1 percent walk rate, the latter of which helped him get on base and rack up 15 steals through 60 games for the Cyclones. MLB.com's Top Prospects list projects a 2027 ETA for Benge to arrive in the majors, but he has the skills to get there sooner than that.
