Jonah Tong Strikes Out Seven in Latest Start, Nearing Return to Major Leagues?

New York Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong made his third start of the season on Wednesday for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing two earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out seven in five innings of work. He also hit one batter. The right-hander threw 83 pitches in the outing (53 of them for strikes) and, at that pitch count, should be ready to return to the majors whenever the need arises for the Mets. The team's second-ranked prospect had an uneven debut in the majors last year, allowing one run or less in two starts but four or more in the other three; however, he was able to maintain his strikeout-per-inning rate with 22 punchouts in 18 2/3 innings pitched. Through three starts for Syracuse, the 22-year-old has looked good in two of them, while the other was a dud, but if he can get on a roll, the former seventh-rounder should get the call to the big leagues again within the next couple of months. There is strikeout upside here if managers in deeper leagues are looking for a stash option, but others may want to take a wait-and-see approach before rostering him.

Jonah Tong Tosses Four Shutout Frames in Season Debut

New York Mets right-handed pitching prospect Jonah Tong tossed four shutout frames in his Triple-A debut on Friday. Tong logged four clean innings with just one hit and two free passes. He struck out four. This was a strong debut for Tong, who was in serious competition for a lead role on the MLB roster during spring training. The right-hander made his MLB debut last summer but struggled in his first taste, logging 18 2/3 innings with a hefty 7.71 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. However, as he progressed through the system, Tong flashed immense upside and quickly established himself as one of the game's top pitching prospects. In 2025, Tong posted a stellar 1.43 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 113 2/3 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A, with 179 punchouts. The 22-year-old remains a solid stash candidate in deeper 12+ team leagues as he will likely be the first name called when the Mets need additional pitching depth.

Jonah Tong to Contend for Early Call-Up?

New York Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong could be an early-season call-up for the team whenever they find themselves in need of pitching. Although the right-hander struggled to a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, and a 14.9 percent K-BB% in his five starts with the Mets last year, he was one of the most dominant arms in the minors before that. Despite being in the majors for the final month, the former seventh-round draft pick still led all minor leaguers with 179 strikeouts in just 113 2/3 innings pitched, good for a 14.17 K/9. If he can continue to dominate to begin the 2026 campaign and perhaps tone down the walks (career rate of 11.5 percent) then he should be in contention for an early-season call-up. Pitching-needy managers in deeper leagues could consider stashing the 22-year-old, who is available in over 90 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Mets Option Jonah Tong to Triple-A

The New York Mets announced on Tuesday that they optioned right-hander Jonah Tong to Triple-A Syracuse. Tong will most likely be back in the big leagues with the Mets at some point in 2026, but for now, he'll get some more seasoning in the minors to begin the year. The 22-year-old gave up three runs in 2 2/3 innings in his lone Grapefruit League start this spring. The Canadian hurler and former seventh-round pick in 2022 also struggled in his major-league debut last season, posting a 7.71 ERA and 1.77 WHIP with 22 strikeouts and nine walks in 18 2/3 innings over his first five starts for the Mets. It shouldn't take away from how great he was in the minors in 2025, as he posted a 1.43 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 179 strikeouts, and a 52.9% ground-ball rate in 22 starts at Double-A and Triple-A. Tong will eventually be locked into a starting rotation spot for the Mets down the road, but there are durability questions because of his small stature of 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds.

Jonah Tong Looking to Develop his Offspeed Pitches

New York Mets right-hander Jonah Tong said that his focus in spring training this year is to "further develop his offspeed pitches," according to Laura Albanese of Newsday. Tong was confident in his fastball and changeup, and "I want to make sure I have the same level of confidence in my other two offerings." The 22-year-old is trying to improve his slider, curveball, and cutter to make him a more well-rounded pitcher as he enters his first full MLB season in 2026. The former seventh-rounder in 2022 made his big-league debut last year and struggled in five starts (18 2/3 innings), allowing 20 runs (16 earned) on 24 hits (three home runs), but he was able to strike out 22 hitters while walking nine. Tong was amazing in the minors, though, posting a 1.43 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 179 K's, and a 52.9% ground-ball rate in 22 starts. He will certainly need to improve his secondary offerings over a full season in the big leagues, and some critics are worried about his durability because of his slight frame at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Tong checks in as RotoBaller's No. 84 starting pitcher for 2026.

Jonah Tong Won't Pitch in the World Baseball Classic

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonah Tong has decided that he will not play for Canada in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. While Tong expressed a desire to participate, he's ultimately opting out in order to get ready for the 2026 MLB season. The 22-year-old faced some adversity upon making his big-league debut last year, pitching to a 7.71 ERA and 4.31 FIP across five starts in Queens. His strikeout rate of 10.61 K/9 indicates impressive stuff, but there's still some concern about his control (4.34 BB/9) and ability to limit damage (1.45 HR/9). As a result, it was recently reported that Tong isn't a lock to make the Mets' Opening Day roster, with the idea that he could use a little more time in Triple-A. Before any transactional decisions are made, though, he'll have ample chances to compete for a roster spot by pitching in spring training, which begins in February. Tong currently ranks as the #88 starting pitcher in RotoBaller's 2026 fantasy baseball draft rankings.

Jonah Tong Falling Out of Rotation Spot?

According to Will Sammon and Chad Jennings of The Athletic, New York Mets right-handed pitching prospect Jonah Tong may be on the outside of the team's starting rotation to begin the 2026 season. On Wednesday evening, the Mets acquired right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Brewers, who is now slated to lead the rotation. In exchange, the Mets sent two top prospects, Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. While Tong was already sitting towards the back of the current rotation, Sammon and Jennings project the young right-hander to open the season as a depth option, sitting behind Peralta, Sean Manaea, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Nolan McLean, and Kodai Senga. While Tong could be shifted to the bullpen, it appears the team's No. 4 prospect may begin the season with Triple-A to continue his development. During his first look at the majors, Tong held a high 7.71 ERA across 18 2/3 innings. For now, he is best left for deeper NL-only formats as a late-round stash option.

Jonah Tong a Name to Watch in Spring Training

New York Mets right-handed pitching prospect Jonah Tong is a name to closely monitor in spring training. Tong progressed through the Mets' system quite quickly in 2025, but stumbled as soon as he reached the big leagues. Through his first 18 2/3 innings with the Mets, Tong posted a hefty 7.71 ERA with a 1.177 WHIP. He struck out only 22 hitters while allowing walks at a high 10.3% rate. However, in the minor leagues, Tong looked like a budding ace as he tossed 113 1/3 innings (primarily at Double-A) to the tune of a 1.43 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and a 179:42 K:BB. At Double-A, he held an incredible 1.59 ERA across 102 innings. While he possesses high upside, he may not be guaranteed a spot in the rotation out of camp, as he will likely be in contention for the final spot alongside Clay Holmes and Brandon Sproat. Given his unexpected role, he is only worth targeting in deep 12+ team leagues in early drafts.

Jonah Tong Named Mets Minor-League Pitcher of the Year

New York Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong was named the organization's minor-league Pitcher of the Year for his performance this season. The Mets' fourth-ranked prospect pitched to a 1.43 ERA (1.68 FIP) and 0.92 WHIP, recording 179 strikeouts in just 113 2/3 innings pitched, which is still the most strikeouts in all the minor leagues despite not having pitched there since August 23. The 22-year-old looked great in his first start in the majors, but has been roughed up in his last two starts, allowing 10 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched with seven walks and seven strikeouts. The right-hander's future remains bright, though, and he should be a fantasy-relevant pitcher for years to come.

Jonah Tong Likely to Pitch on Saturday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonah Tong is scheduled to take the mound this weekend versus the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets are trying to figure everything out in their rotation, but at least have the next few days lined up. The plan is for Clay Holmes to pitch on Wednesday. After that, the Mets are off on Thursday before David Peterson takes the ball on Friday. Tong is currently penciled in the pitch against the Reds on Saturday. Tong's first start came on August 29 against the Miami Marlins. He tossed five innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six batters. Tong will at least make one more start and should be rostered in most 12-team formats.
