Carson Benge Viewed as Potential Starter in Right Field

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge is viewed as a potential starting option in right field ahead of spring training. The team's President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, announced on Tuesday that with Juan Soto shifting to left field, Benge will be given an opportunity to earn the starting job. Additionally, he will compete alongside infielder Brett Baty, newly signed MJ Melendez, and veteran Tyrone Taylor. Baty spent the entire 2025 season in the minor leagues but was knocking on the MLB door for most of the summer. He began the campaign with High-A but would spend the second half at Triple-A. Across 116 total games, the Oklahoma State product posted a .281/.385/.472 line with 15 home runs and 22 stolen bases. He is a top name to monitor in spring training, as he would hold five-category upside if he sees every day at-bats.

Mets Invite Carson Benge to Spring Training

The New York Mets extended a non-roster invitation to outfield prospect Carson Benge on Monday. Despite adding Luis Robert Jr. in a trade this offseason, Benge is expected to compete for a starting job in the Mets' outfield in spring training this year. His primary competition for the left-field job will be Tyrone Taylor, MJ Melendez, and Brett Baty. The 23-year-old hit .281/.385/.472 with 15 home runs and 22 stolen bases in 116 games at three minor-league levels last year. Benge is a former two-way star who should already be stashed in dynasty/keeper leagues. While his upside remains high long term, don't be surprised if the Mets use him in a platoon role at the big-league level against right-handed pitchers. He slugged only .326 in 123 plate appearances against lefties last year. MLB Pipeline has Benge ranked as the No. 16 overall prospect entering the 2026 season.

Carson Benge was Not Considered in Trade With Brewers

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge was never included in the package that brought right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta to Queens. This suggests that the Mets view Benge not only as a short-term answer but also as a long-term part of the team's future. Instead, the Mets traded right-handed pitching prospect Brandon Sproat and top infield prospect Jett Williams to Milwaukee. The Mets selected Benge in the opening round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma State. Last summer, the 23-year-old posted an impressive .281/.385/.472 slash line with 25 doubles, 15 home runs, and 22 stolen bases across 116 games split between High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. Given New York's current outfield, Benge appears to be in serious consideration for the starring role in left field.

Carson Benge Already at Spring Training Complex

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge is already in Port St. Lucie, Fla., at the team's spring training complex after spending some time during the offseason hitting with the Holliday family at Oklahoma State, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Benge is the Mets' top position-player prospect, and the Mets never seriously considered moving him in trade conversations for right-hander Freddy Peralta, according to league sources. The 23-year-old was the 19th overall pick in 2024 out of Oklahoma State, and the Mets clearly think highly of him. President of baseball operations David Stearns has expressed interest in allowing Benge to crack the Opening Day roster out of spring training. Benge slashed .281/.385/.472 with 15 homers and 22 steals at three minor-league levels in 2025. He has a chance to start in center field, but even if he doesn't, Benge could be a left-handed platoon option in a corner-outfield spot.

Carson Benge a Name to Closely Monitor in Camp

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge is a name to closely monitor during spring training. As reported by Sam Dykstra of MLB.com, Benge is in the mix to win a starting job in the outfield out of spring training. Following the departure of Brandon Nimmo, Benge could make a strong case in spring training to claim the open role in the outfield. Currently, the Mets are slated to put Tyrone Taylor in center field and Juan Soto in right field. While they have been linked to free agents like Kyle Tucker, as of now, a corner outfield position appears to be open for the taking. Last season, Benge opened the campaign with High-A but was able to end the season with Triple-A. Across 116 total games, the No. 21-ranked prospect in the sport posted a .281/.385/.472 line with an .857 OPS. Managers should closely monitor Benge's production in the spring, as he could be a top late-round target in drafts if he can claim the open role in the outfield.

Carson Benge Could be Mets' Opening Day Center Fielder

The New York Mets' trade of long-time outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers might have cleared a lane for outfield prospect Carson Benge to become the team's starting center fielder on Opening Day in 2026, according to Sam Dykstra of MLB.com. Benge, the team's No. 2 prospect and the No. 21 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, climbed three levels in the minors in his first full season in 2025. He has a real shot to not only make the big-league roster out of spring training, but also win starting center-field duties now that Nimmo is gone. The 22-year-old was drafted 19th overall in 2024 as a two-way player out of Oklahoma State. Benge has since become a full-time outfielder and hit .281/.385/.472 with 15 homers and 22 steals in 116 games over three minor-league levels. Benge has great bat-to-ball skills, developing power, and above-average speed. His primary competition in center field in spring training will be with Tyrone Taylor.

Carson Benge has a Shot to Win Opening Day Roster Spot

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge "is going to come into spring training with a chance to make our team," president of baseball operations David Stearns said at the GM meetings in Las Vegas on Tuesday, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Per MLB Pipeline, Benge is considered the team's No. 2 prospect, behind only pitcher Nolan McLean. The 22-year-old was the 19th overall pick in 2024 out of Oklahoma State, and he impressed at High-A Brooklyn, Double-A Binghamton, and Triple-A Syracuse this year by hitting .281 (124-for-441) with 15 long balls, 73 RBI, 87 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases in 116 total games. However, Benge struggled with a .583 OPS at Syracuse, so fantasy managers might want to pump the brakes on the left-handed hitter contributing right away at the big-league level in 2026.

Carson Benge Named Mets Minor-League Player of the Year

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge was named the organization's minor league Player of the Year on Monday. The Mets' top-ranked prospect had a strong year that began at High-A and ended at Triple-A. He slashed .308/.413/.513 with 12 home runs and 19 steals in 92 games between High-A and Double-A, although Triple-A proved a bit more challenging. The 2024 first-rounder hit safely in seven of his first 11 games at that level, but is just 1-for-28 (.036) over his last seven games. There was some momentum that seemed to give hope to a potential 2025 MLB debut, but at this point in the season, he's basically run out of time, at least in terms of fantasy. Look for a 2026 debut, and he should bring solid hit, power, and run tools to the big leagues once he gets there.

Carson Benge Launches First Triple-A Home Run

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge hit his first Triple-A home run on Friday evening, facing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Benge was sidelined for most of the week on the Triple-A IL but wasted little time to make an impact in his return. In just his second game back from the IL and only sixth game with Triple-A Syracuse, Benge went 1-for-4 with his first Triple-A round-tripper. The former 19th overall pick from last year's MLB Draft opened the season at High-A but has progressed through the pipeline very quickly. Through 92 games split between High-A and Double-A, Benge posted an impressive .309/.418/.507 line with a .925 OPS and 11 home runs. Given his impressive progression through the minor leagues, Benge may have an opportunity to join the Mets for their postseason run.

Carson Benge Hits Triple-A Injured List

New York Mets outfield prospect Carson Benge (hand) was placed on the 7-day injured list on August 16, a day after getting hit in the hand by a pitch during a game at Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets' top-ranked prospect earned a promotion to Syracuse after slashing .308/.413/.513 with 12 home runs and 19 steals in 92 games between High-A and Double-A. The 2024 first-rounder was playing in just his fourth game at Triple-A when the injury occurred, and likely puts an MLB debut on ice until 2026. The 22-year-old offers solid hit, power, and run tools, so he is a prospect worth stashing in dynasty formats.
