Derek Hill Designated for Assignment

The Miami Marlins announced that they have activated outfielder Derek Hill (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list and designated him for assignment. His roster spot will go to outfielder Griffin Conine (shoulder), who's back from the 60-day IL. Hill has dealt with multiple injuries this year, most recently a strained right hamstring he suffered on Sept. 1. He appeared in 53 of the Marlins' games this season and batted an uninspiring .213/.275/.331 with three homers, 10 RBI, 19 runs scored, and seven steals in 141 trips to the plate. If the light-hitting 29-year-old goes through waivers unclaimed, he could elect free agency and try to catch on elsewhere.

Derek Hill Not Expected to Return Until Next Year

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (hamstring) will go on the injured list after suffering a right-hamstring strain while running out a grounder against the Washington Nationals on Monday, and he's not expected to return until next year, according to MLB.com. The Marlins figure to officially place Hill on the IL before their series opener on Friday against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. The 29-year-old outfielder will end his sixth year in the big leagues (first full season with Miami) with a weak .213/.275/.331 slash line, .606 OPS, three home runs, 10 RBI, 19 runs scored and a career-high seven stolen bases in just 53 games played for the Fish. Hill now has a career slash line of .228/.276/.348 with 14 hom runs, 53 RBI and 23 stolen bases in his six MLB seasons with five different teams. The journeyman outfielder won't be on the fantasy radar in 2026.

Derek Hill Leaves Early Monday With Hamstring Discomfort

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (hamstring) left Monday's game early in th third inning against the Washington Nationals in D.C. with right-hamstring discomfort, according to Stephen Strom of Marlins Radio. Hill injured his hamstring while running to first base on a groundout to shortstop in his only plate appearance. Jakob Marsee shifted from left field to center field, while Victor Mesa Jr. entered the contest to man left field for the Fish. The Marlins will likely send the 29-year-old for testing, which will determine if he'll need a stint on the injured list. Hill hasn't been relevant in mixed fantasy leagues in his first full year in Miami, as he came into Monday's action slashing .214/.277/.333 with three home runs, 10 RBI and seven steals in only 52 games. Mesa could be a lineup regular for Miami going forward if Hill lands on the IL.

Derek Hill to Begin Triple-A Rehab Assignment

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (finger) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday. The Marlins placed Hill on the 10-day injured list on July 22 with a sprained middle finger on his left hand, but it doesn't appear he'll miss much more time. The 29-year-old has hit a woeful .211/.276/.322 with two homers, seven RBI, 14 runs scored, and six steals in 100 plate appearances this season.

Derek Hill Lands on Injured List with Sprained Finger

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (finger) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left middle finger sprain on Tuesday, reports Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. He was replaced on the roster by Jack Winkler, who was recalled from Triple-A. The 29-year-old suffered the injury while practicing in the batting cage on Saturday and will be out until at least next week. His playing time has been sporadic as of late, as he was mainly serving as their fourth outfielder. He's batting just .211 with a .275 on-base percentage in 33 games this season, so even when healthy, he shouldn't be on many fantasy radars.

Derek Hill Scratched with Finger injury

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (finger) is dealing with a minor finger injury and won't start Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals, but he's available off the bench. The Marlins will start Dane Myers in center field for the fourth straight game. Hill hasn't played since July 12, and he's hitting a meager .211/.276/.322 line with two home runs, seven RBI, and six stolen bases in 100 plate appearances.

Derek Hill Will be Activated From the Injured List on Tuesday

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (wrist) will be able to return to the team before Tuesday's matchup with the Twins after missing just over a month with a left wrist sprain. Hill went 3-for-11 with a walk, a double, and two strikeouts in three rehab contests for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Before the injury, Hill hit .233 with two homers, six stolen bases, and a .298 wOBA in 23 games for the Fish. He will likely share center field duties with Dane Myers, who has been playing well in Hill's absence. Both players are 29 years old and neither is part of the Marlins' young core, but they should continue to get enough playing time to be on the radar for NL-only leagues and DFS bargain plays. Both players can be decent sources of cheap speed if they are aggressive on the basepaths.

Derek Hill Starting a Rehab Assignment on Thursday

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (wrist) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday night, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. Hill will resume playing in games in the minors after missing the last month with a sprained left wrist. If the 29-year-old can avoid setbacks with the Jumbo Shrimp this weekend, it's possible he will rejoin the major-league roster for next week's series against the visiting Minnesota Twins, which begins on Tuesday. The former first-rounder in 2014 by the Detroit Tigers went 17-for-73 (.233) with two home runs, five RBI, 11 runs scored and six stolen bases in 23 games for the Fish this year before his injury. At best, Hill will be in a platoon role in the outfield for one of the worst teams in the big leagues, which limits his fantasy appeal to NL-only formats. His most attractive trait is his 95th percentile sprint speed.

Derek Hill Starts Hitting Progression

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill (wrist) began a hitting progression on Monday, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. Hill is making progress after landing on the 10-day injured list three weeks ago with a left-wrist sprain. The 29-year-old will most likely be required to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league roster, hopefully before the mid-July All-Star break. The former first-rounder by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 played in 23 games this year before his injury, going 17-for-73 (.233) with two home runs, four doubles, five RBI, 11 runs scored and six stolen bases. Hill won't be guaranteed regular playing time in Miami when he returns from the IL after striking out over 30% of the time with the Marlins, Rangers and Giants in 2024. At best, he'll be an option in NL-only leagues for his speed.

Derek Hill Making the Start in Center Field

Miami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill is starting in center field and batting eighth for Monday's series opener against the visiting Chicago Cubs and right-hander Ben Brown. This will be Hill's first start in the outfield in the last four games despite the fact that Dane Myers (oblique) is currently on the injured list. It doesn't bode well for Hill seeing regular playing time for the Fish when Myers is able to return, whenever that may be. The former 23rd overall pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 has done very little at the plate in his limited opportunities this year in Miami, going 10-for-57 (.175) with two home runs, two doubles, five RBI, four steals, four walks and 24 strikeouts in 17 games played. He'll be a low-upside DFS play near the bottom of the batting order against Brown, who he is hitless against in just two career at-bats.
