Trea Turner News
The San Diego Padres had a high level of disappointment when shortstop Trea Turner chose to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday for 11 years and $300 million, according to multiple sources. The precise terms of the Padres' offer to Turner weren't known, but two people not directly involved but familiar with the dealings said the Padres offered Turner more than the Phillies. San Diego drafted Turner 13th overall in 2014, only later to trade him to the Washington Nationals in a three-team deal that brought Wil Myers to the Friars. Turner and his wife were said all along to prefer the East Coast since they're both from Florida. A team source said Monday that the Padres are no longer in the market for a shortstop and were always really only in it for Turner, who since the start of 2016 has led baseball in steals (228) and ranked ninth in batting average (.303).
According to a tweet from ESPN's Jeff Passan on Monday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly "in agreement on a contract" with free-agent shortstop Trea Turner. Kiley McDaniel reported that the deal is for 11 years and $300 million and includes a full no-trade clause. The 29-year-old hit .298 last season in 708 plate appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers while also logging a .343 on-base percentage, 21 home runs and 27 stolen bases. One of fantasy baseball's elite options, both in general and at the shortstop position, Turner also turned in 100 or more runs and RBI with 101 runs scored and 100 RBI this past season.
The San Diego Padres have met with free-agent shortstop Trea Turner twice in person before next week's Winter Meetings in San Diego, according to major-league sources. It's unclear exactly when the Padres met with Turner, but the fact that there have been multiple meetings suggests some level of mutual interest. The Padres have also expressed interest in another top free-agent shortstop in Xander Bogaerts. Turner is a candidate for possibly $300 million, and he appears to be San Diego's preference. The Padres already have two shortstops in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim and two $300 million players, but they cannot be ruled out as a factor for Turner. The Friars traded Turner to the Nationals in 2015 and have indicated notable interest in a potential reunion in recent years.

You could consider 2022 a down year for Trea, reaching four-year lows in batting average and slugging percentage. He fell short of his 2021 totals in both homers (21) and steals (27), but playing a full year as the Dodgers three-hitter led to a huge spike in RBI (100). It's funny that we're calling a 101 R, 21 HR, 100 RBI, 27 SB, .298 AVG season a "down year", but that's just the bar that Trea has set for us in his career. His great performance since entering the league in 2015 (a career .302/.355/.487 hitter) earned him a massive new contract in Philadelphia, where he will man shortstop and hit in the top third of the order for the next decade or more. Assuming health, few hitters will best Trea in counting stats, and a 20-20 season does seem like a floor for him, especially in the hitter-friendly Citizen's Bank Park. The upside is something like 110 R, 30 HR, 100 RBI, 30 SB, and a .320 AVG. Few hitters boast that kind of game-wrecking ability. Turner is once again an easy top-three pick in roto drafts this year, and it's perfectly fine to take him at #1 overall.
