Trea Turner News
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner is getting the day off on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. Turner has yet to sit out of a game this season so this is a much-needed breather for the 29-year-old dynamo. Edmundo Sosa is starting at shortstop and batting ninth against Jameson Taillon and the Cubs. Turner has been a pretty big letdown here in the early going, slashing just .257/.302/.390 with five home runs, 10 RBI, and five stolen bases across 187 at-bats. He could get hot at any time so fantasy managers will obviously stick with him but it's safe to say he hasn't lived up to expectations thus far.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner had a successful day at the plate after going 2-for-5 in Wednesday's 7-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants. He ripped a single in the first inning and picked up a knock to right fielder Michael Conforto in the eighth inning. Turner did strike out twice but had an encouraging day at the plate overall. He hasn't been hitting to the tune of a $300 million contract, and the Phillies were expecting Turner's bat to make a drastic improvement in the lineup. He is slashing .262/.308/.707 on the season along with just 10 RBI. His swinging choices have not been his usual hacks, which could be the root of his struggles. Turner posts a 26.3% strikeout rate, which is a notable leap from last season's 18.5% mark. The Phillies hope that Turner can right his ship at the plate as the season carries on.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the seventh inning of Saturday's loss to Boston. Turner, the first overall pick in many fantasy leagues earlier this spring, got off to a fine start in registering a .321 batting average through April 19, which was also the last time that the speedy 29-year-old stole a base. Following Saturday's two-hit effort, Turner has a decent seven-game hitting streak active, but still only a mediocre .262 average on the campaign by the former batting champion's lofty standards. Fantasy managers surely like to see the power out of the reigning Silver Slugger, but they expected more in the speed department, as Turner has just four swipes spanning across 145 at-bats in 2023.

You could consider 2022 a down year for Trea, reaching four-year lows in batting average and slugging percentage. He fell short of his 2021 totals in both homers (21) and steals (27), but playing a full year as the Dodgers three-hitter led to a huge spike in RBI (100). It's funny that we're calling a 101 R, 21 HR, 100 RBI, 27 SB, .298 AVG season a "down year", but that's just the bar that Trea has set for us in his career. His great performance since entering the league in 2015 (a career .302/.355/.487 hitter) earned him a massive new contract in Philadelphia, where he will man shortstop and hit in the top third of the order for the next decade or more. Assuming health, few hitters will best Trea in counting stats, and a 20-20 season does seem like a floor for him, especially in the hitter-friendly Citizen's Bank Park. The upside is something like 110 R, 30 HR, 100 RBI, 30 SB, and a .320 AVG. Few hitters boast that kind of game-wrecking ability. Turner is once again an easy top-three pick in roto drafts this year, and it's perfectly fine to take him at #1 overall.
