Tim Mayza Could See Save Opportunities in Philadelphia

MLB Network's Jon Morosi mentions that Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Tim Mayza has been excellent so far this year when discussing the direction that the team might go at the back end of the bullpen with star closer Jhoan Duran (oblique) expected to be out two to three weeks with an oblique injury. Right-hander Brad Keller is "probably" going to be the guy that gets the next save chance in Philly, but Mayza, Jose Alvarado, and Orion Kerkering could end up forming some sort of committee for manager Rob Thomson. Mayza could get the nod if it's a lefty-heavy inning for the opponent in the ninth inning. The 34-year-old veteran only has four saves in his big-league career in eight-plus seasons, but he currently has a 3.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts and four walks in 12 relief innings pitched in 2026. In deeper fantasy leagues where managers are desperate for saves, they may want to consider a waiver-wire pickup of Mayza in the short term.

Tim Mayza Signs a Major League Contract with the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed relief pitcher Tim Mayza to a one-year deal, according to Jeff Skversky of FOX29. Mayza had already been in camp with the Phillies, but he had asked to be released from his minor league contract. Ultimately, the Phillies wanted Mayza on their Opening Day roster, so they brought him back on a major league contract. It's a rewarding outcome for the veteran reliever after he posted a 3.75 xFIP with 10 strikeouts and two walks across 8.1 innings of work in spring training. He offers the Phillies' bullpen a reliable veteran left-handed presence. Philadelphia's bullpen is projected to open the year with four lefties and four righties.

Tim Mayza Could be an Option for Red Sox

According to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live, the Red Sox could look to target left-hander Tim Mayza in free agency. With Justin Wilson potentially considering a return, the Red Sox could look to sign Mayza to fill his role. Last season, the left-hander logged only 16 2/3 innings of work as he was sidelined for most of the campaign due to a left lat strain. During this brief stint, he split time with the Pirates and Phillies, posting a 3.78 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP. He struck out 15 hitters. In 2024, the southpaw logged 42 2/3 innings with the Yankees and Blue Jays, posting a high 6.33 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. While Mayza could fill a low-leverage role in the Boston bullpen, managers should not expect him to compete for any high-leverage opportunities, given his recent struggles, if he were to sign there. Aroldis Chapman remains the clear-cut ninth-inning option, while Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten remain the top targets for holds.

Justin Lawrence, Tim Mayza Throwing from 120 Feet

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitchers Justin Lawrence (elbow) and Tim Mayza (shoulder) appear to be making progress in their recovery process. Both pitchers have been out since late April, but are finally making decent progress. They've progressed to throwing from 120 feet with good velocity and intensity, according to senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Both pitchers figure to require minor league rehab assignments before returning to the mound in Pittsburgh. The hope is that both of them can be back in the mix by the late of July. Neither pitcher offers much fantasy value as low leverage options out of the bullpen.

Tim Mayza Cleared for Plyometric Program

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever Tim Mayza (lat) had serial imaging done on his shoulder late last week by Dr. Anthony Romeo in Chicago and was cleared to start a plyometric workout program, which he will do for the next two weeks, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Colin Beazley. If Mayza avoids a setback with his strained left lat muscle, he can resume a throwing program. The 33-year-old southpaw has been sidelined since landing on the 15-day injured list back on April 19. Even if he doesn't encounter any setbacks when he resumes throwing, Mayza is unlikely to return to the Pirates' bullpen until late June or early July. When Mayza does return, he won't really be much of a fantasy option with just four career saves in eight seasons. He had a 2.89 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with eight K's in just 9 1/3 innings before his injury.

Tim Mayza Signs One-Year Deal With Pittsburgh

According to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza to a one-year contract. Mayza had a disappointing 2024 campaign as he posed a career-worst 6.33 ERA and a .162 WHIP across 42 2/3 innings with both the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. He struck out 28 batters with a modest 7.7% walk rate. He generated a hefty 9.3% barrel rate and a mediocre 38.4% hard-hit rate. However, in 2023, the southpaw posted a stellar 1.52 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP across 53 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out 53 batters, a much higher mark than his 2024 production. The reliever will look to bounce back the Steel City operating as a middle reliever.

Yankees Non-Tender Jon Berti, Tim Mayza

The New York Yankees non-tendered infielder Jon Berti and left-hander Tim Mayza on Friday, making them both free agents. Berti, 34, stole a league-high 41 bases just two years ago in 2022 with the Miami Marlins, but he was limited to 25 games at the big-league level in 2024 in his first year in the Bronx. In his 74 plate appearances, he hit .273 (18-for-66) with a homer, six RBI and five steals. Berti's speed, on-base abilities and defensive versatility should land him a job somewhere on the open market as a utility man in 2025. Mayza, 32, had a rough start to the year with the Toronto Blue Jays with an ERA over 8.00 in 35 relief appearances, but he was better (4.00 ERA) in 18 relief innings for New York in the second half of the season. He was a successful high-leverage arm for Toronto several years ago and will be looking to bounce back somewhere else in 2025.

Blue Jays Activate Tim Mayza From Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays activated reliever Tim Mayza (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. The veteran reliever has made 41 appearances this season for the Blue Jays and has been a quality option for fantasy managers in leagues where holds are part of the scoring. The left-hander has pitched to a 2.88 ERA and a 3.93 FIP in 34.1 innings. He's also registered 27 strikeouts while walking just nine batters. Elsewhere, he's accumulated five wins and 11 holds. Toronto optioned fellow reliever Zach Pop to Triple-A to make room on the active roster for Mayza.

Blue Jays Hope To Get Tim Mayza Back This Year

The Toronto Blue Jays are hopeful that they'll get relief pitcher Tim Mayza (shoulder) back near the end of August after he recently suffered a dislocated right shoulder. The Blue Jays placed Mayza on the injured list over the weekend, but it sounds like the Jays will get him back in the bullpen this season. The 30-year-old left-hander has been excellent for Toronto this year, going 5-0 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 27 strikeouts and just nine walks in 34 1/3 relief innings. While Mayza has been solid for the Jays in relief, he's not much of a fantasy option since he's not closing out games and has only a 20 percent strikeout rate.

Tim Mayza Lands On The Injured List

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Tim Mayza (shoulder) has landed on the 15-day injured list with a dislocated right shoulder. The 30-year-old southpaw sustained the injury on Saturday during a collision at home plate. Mayza has been excellent for the Blue Jays this season, posting a 2.88 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 27:9 K/BB ratio with 11 holds over 34 1/3 innings (41 appearances). Right-handed pitcher Trent Thornton was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move and will slide into the Jays bullpen.
