Aaron Nola News
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola has reached a long term extension with the organization. The 30-year-old has agreed to a seven-year, $172 million extension on Sunday. The right-hander went 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 202/45 K/BB ratio over 193 2/3 innings in 2023. He has been a reliable option for the Phillies since breaking into the league in 2017. Nola has thrown more than 180 innings in each of the last five seasons, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign. The deal is pending a physical, but it sounds like Nola is going to stick around in Philly for a long time.
The New York Yankees are among the most active teams in the starting pitching market this offseason, and sources are saying they are showing early interest in free-agent right-handers Aaron Nola and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Nola is expected to decline his $20.3 million qualifying offer from the Philadelphia Phillies by the deadline early next week, while the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball announced last week that Yamamoto will officially be posted for MLB teams this winter. Nola is more of a known commodity and reliable workhorse, while the 25-year-old Yamamoto has an impressive 1.72 ERA in seven seasons in Japan. He had a 1.16 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 176 innings to just 28 walks in 171 innings in 2023 and will be highly coveted on the open market.
The Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals are among the teams showing early interest in free-agent right-hander Aaron Nola, according to sources. Nola has until Tuesday to decide on whether he will accept the $20.3 million qualifying offer the Philadelphia Phillies extended to him last week. He's expected to reject the offer in hopes of securing a more lucrative multi-year deal on the open market. The 30-year-old is reportedly "close" with Braves pitching coach Rich Kranitz, who served as the Phillies' bullpen coach in 2016 and 2017 before being elevated to pitching coach in 2018. Nola had somewhat of a down year in the 2023 regular season, going 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 202 strikeouts in 193 2/3 innings. Still, he was dominant in the postseason and will be one of the more coveted starting pitchers on the market this offseason.

We received a slight discount on Nola in 2022 after he posted an uninspiring ERA in 2021. Fantasy managers who took advantage of that were rewarded in 2022, as Nola turned in a fantastic season on the hill, posting a 3.25 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and a sparkling 29.1%-3.6% K%-BB%. The most important stat you can point to with starting pitchers is the strikeout-to-walk ratio, and few pitchers do it better than Nola in that regard. He once again threw four pitches above 10% of the time, and they are all effective pitches in their own right. The knock on Nola is that his strike-throwing ways can turn into a higher-than-desired home run rate, but his ability to get deep into games and rack up quality starts and wins takes away a lot of the sting of that, and the WHIP will always be great with how few batters he walks. Another very appealing thing about Nola is that he's delivered four straight 30+ start seasons (not counting 2020). He is a picture of health and consistency, and can be drafted confidently as your fantasy team's ace in 2023.
