Jesús Luzardo News
Left-hander Jesus Luzardo will take the mound at home for the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in his second start of the season. Luzardo went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out eight in his first start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will now face an Angels lineup that is slashing .195/.264/.383. Luzardo has faced the Angels six times, but just once as a starter, and is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Mike Trout has taken the lefty deep three times in just five at-bats, so Luzardo is looking to find better success on Tuesday to pick up his first win of the season.
Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker announced on Tuesday that left-hander Jesus Luzardo will start on Opening Day on March 28 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Luzardo will be the staff ace in Miami in 2024 with Sandy Alcantara (elbow) out for the entire season. In his second full season with the Fish last year, Luzardo went 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA (3.55 FIP) and 1.21 WHIP with 55 walks and a career-high 208 strikeouts in 178 2/3 innings over 32 starts. The 25-year-old Peruvian southpaw could be affected by a career-high workload last year, but it shouldn't be enough of a concern to dissuade fantasy managers from rolling with Luzardo as their No. 2 starter with upside this year.
The Miami Marlins and left-hander Jesus Luzardo have avoided arbitration with a one-year, $5.5 million pact for the 2024 season. The 26-year-old has found another gear since being acquired in a trade with the Oakland A's midway through the 2021 season. The southpaw worked to a 3.32 ERA across 18 starts for the Fish in the 2022 season before posting a 3.58 ERA across a career-high 32 starts and 178 2/3 innings a season ago. A former top prospect in Oakland, he has certainly put his 6.61 ERA from the 2021 campaign in the rearview. With Sandy Alcantara out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, Luzardo has a good shot at taking the mound on Opening Day as the club's ace in 2024 and is certainly an attractive fantasy asset moving forward.

Before 2023, Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo hadn't surpassed more than 100 1/3 IP in a season, but last year, the lefty tallied 178 2/3 IP. The former third-round pick notched a career-high in Ks with 208, twelfth-most in the majors, a 1.21 WHIP, 3.55 FIP, and 20.6% K-BB% on his way to collecting 10 wins. Luzardo also posted a top-12 SwStr% (14.1%) and Contact% (70.8%). He went from 6.1% BB% in the first half of 2023 to 9.6% in the second half, but should lower the BB% as he matures and gets used to pitching more innings. Another bugaboo is the long ball. The southpaw allowed an 11.5% HR/FB in 2023. FGDC projections for 2024 have him going 11-10 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 18.8% K-BB%, and 208 K in 181 IP. His NFBC ADP has him going around pick 90, but RotoBaller is very bullish, ranking him at 74. It'd be no surprise to see Luzardo go to his first All-Star game in 2024, and it's no wonder his name is being tossed around as a possible trade target. If he gets an upgrade in environment, it could boost his projected win total, increasing his fantasy value too.
