Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back), who was out of the starting lineup for the third straight day on Monday against the Colorado Rockies due to back spasms, appeared as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and walked before scoring the go-ahead run in the 6-1 victory in the team's home opener. Turner is expected to miss another game on Tuesday against Colorado, but he's clearly feeling better and is expected to return to the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest. The 31-year-old veteran is still searching for his first hit of the 2025 season after going hitless in his first six plate appearance with two walks, a strikeout and a run scored in just two games (one start). Fantasy managers will want to check back later on Tuesday to see if he's back in there, but most likely he won't be available again until Wednesday's game.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) is not in the team's lineup for their home-opening series against the Colorado Rockies. Turner has been limited to just one outing thus far while experiencing back spasms that have held him out for three straight contests. Fortunately, the 31-year-old was seen taking ground balls on Monday. He noted that he was feeling better and that he hoped to play again on Wednesday. Turner has no hits in his first four at-bats but has been a good bet for four-category production when he's healthy. Teammate Edmundo Sosa projects to continue filling in at shortstop while the veteran is sidelined.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) is not expected to return to the starting lineup until Wednesday, according to manager Rob Thompson. Turner missed his second straight game on Sunday due to back spasms. The organization plans to rest him again on Monday before the team has an off day on Tuesday. That would give Turner four days of rest before likely getting back into the lineup on Wednesday. The expectation is that Edmundo Sosa will continue start at shortstop until Turner is back. Sosa could have some short term fantasy value, but might not be worth adding with Turner possibly returning on Wednesday.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) and catcher J.T. Realmuto (foot) are not in Sunday's lineup when the Phillies conclude a series with the Washington Nationals. Turner was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to back spasms, and Realmuto was removed from Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his foot. His X-rays came back negative, but the team will exercise caution with both of their key players. As a result, Edmundo Sosa will get the nod at shortstop for the second-straight day and bat sixth. Rafael Marchan will play behind the plate and bat ninth. Fantasy managers should monitor their status leading up to their next contest on Monday against the Colorado Rockies. Both Sosa and Marchan are worth a look as budget plays in DFS facing Washington southpaw Mitchell Parker.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to back spasms. As a result, Edmundo Sosa will cover shortstop and bat ninth. Fantasy managers should continue to keep a close eye on his status leading up to their next contest on Sunday. If Turner were to miss an extended period, Sosa would likely see most of the starting opportunities. Last season, Turner posted a .295/.338/.469 slash line with 25 doubles and 21 long balls. He swiped 19 bags and showed a strong eye at the plate as he posted a strong 18.2 percent strikeout rate. Last summer, Sosa posted a .257/.313/.422 line with 12 doubles and seven round-trippers. He will face Washington right-hander Jake Irvin, who held a 4.41 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP last season.
MLB.com's Todd Zolecki writes that the Philadelphia Phillies think they can improve their chances of winning the World Series by making shortstop Trea Turner their leadoff hitter, although manager Rob Thomson won't make a final decision on the batting order until the end of spring training. "As long as he's got the mindset of getting on base -; and I think he does -; being in the leadoff spot could help that a little bit," Thomson said. Turner has hit second 234 times in his two seasons in Philly, compared to just 38 times as the leadoff man. However, the 31-year-old could move to leadoff in 2025, dropping Kyle Schwarber to cleanup. It could make Turner more selective, which would be a good thing, as he has chased more pitches (34.7%) with the Phils than he did in his first eight seasons (27.4%). A move to leadoff should boost Turner's steals and runs scored for fantasy managers.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner continued to heat up at the plate in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Rays. Turner went 3-for-5 with a single, a pair of two-run home runs, and a strikeout. The 31-year-old launched a third-inning Taj Bradley fastball into the left-field seats and hit an eighth-inning Edwin Uceta offering into nearly the same spot in the seats. Turner's second-half stats are down compared to his first-half, but he has picked things up in September, slashing .297/.366/.595 with three HR in 37 at-bats. A Turner hot streak hitting at the top of a surging Phillies lineup is exactly what fantasy managers need as the season finishes up.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner tallied four hits, including a game-winning single in Friday evening's walk-off win over the visiting division-rival Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. After ripping a double off Washington left-hander Patrick Corbin to left-center field for his third knock of the game, Turner cracked a walk-off single off the left-field fence to give the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Nationals on Friday. The 31-year-old fantasy superstar is slashing a strong .309/.352/.475 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI, 62 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases over 343 at-bats (81 games) as Philly's primary No. 2 hitter this season.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner is retreating to the bench for Wednesday's matchup at Citizens Bank Park against the visiting Miami Marlins. With Turner getting the day off, Edmundo Sosa is starting at the 6 and batting seventh for the Phils against Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera. This will be Turner's first day off since July 31, and it's a good time to give him a blow with the 31-year-old All-Star shortstop struggling offensively of late. Turner is always a must-start in fantasy when he's active, but he's gone 8-for-47 (.170) with two doubles, two RBI, one walk, a stolen base and seven strikeouts in 11 games to begin the month of August. Sosa will be a low-upside DFS sleeper at the bottom of the Phillies' batting order on Wednesday in a tough matchup. Sosa has six homers, 26 RBI and six steals in his 196 at-bats this year.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner continued his strong 2024 season in Wednesday afternoon's loss to the hosting Minnesota Twins, smacking his 13th home run and stealing his 13th base of the year. Turner crushed a solo homer off Twins right-hander David Festa to left field to ties the game at in the fifth inning of Wednesday's defeat. The 31-year-old fantasy superstar is checking all the boxes this year, hitting .338 (89-for-263) with 13 long balls, 36 RBI, 54 runs scored, and 13 steals for the Phillies. A staggering 10 of Turner's big flies have come over 73 at-bats the month of July.
