Joe Boyle Joins the Rays' Starting Rotation

Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle will open the season as the team's No. 2 starter, according to Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. Boyle was originally projected to start the year in Triple-A, but he'll now shift to the big-league rotation after Ryan Pepiot (hip) was placed on the 15-day injured list. At a minimum, Boyle will make two starts, but there's a strong chance that he could stay in the rotation longer. His third start would be scheduled for April 8, which is the same day that Pepiot is eligible to be activated. If Pepiot misses the minimum amount of time, Boyle will likely head back to the bullpen or minors after two starts. Otherwise, he'd be on track for three-plus. The 26-year-old is no stranger to longer appearances, as nine of his 13 outings last year were starts. Across 52 total innings, he posted a 4.19 FIP with 10.04 K/9 and 4.85 BB/9. He also brought his ground ball rate up to a career-high 43.8% mark.

Rays Option Joe Boyle on Friday

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-hander Joe Boyle to the minors on Friday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Boyle was competing for a spot in Tampa's bullpen to begin the 2026 regular season, but he'll instead start at Triple-A Durham after posting a 3.72 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with eight walks and 16 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings over his four Grapefruit League appearances this spring. The strikeout upside with the 26-year-old is apparent, but the Rays want him to go down to the farm to get stretched out as a starter. In addition to building stamina, Boyle will work on commanding his electric stuff on the mound. The former fifth-rounder by the Cincinnati Reds in 2020 out of Notre Dame spent the first two years of his MLB career with the A's before posting a 4.67 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 58 strikeouts and 28 walks in 52 appearances in 2025 in Tampa in 13 outings (nine starts). Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can leave Boyle on the waiver wire for the time being.

Joe Boyle to Start on Monday

The Tampa Bay Rays have called up right-hander Joe Boyle from Triple-A Durham to start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The 26-year-old has made 10 appearances (six starts) with the Rays this season and gone 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, and 39:21 K:BB in 36 2/3 frames. The Rays demoted Boyle in late August after he struggled to an unsightly 9.42 ERA over four appearances and 14 1/3 frames last month. Boyle will face a daunting task in trying to contain an elite Toronto offense in his return. The Blue Jays rank second in the league in OPS and fourth in runs scored.

Joe Boyle Sent to Minors

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-hander Joe Boyle to Triple-A Durham on Friday and recalled righty Brian Van Belle to take his roster spot. Boyle had been working out of Tampa Bay's rotation, but the team demoted him after three straight rough starts in which he yielded a combined 15 earned runs on 17 hits and 10 walks (13 strikeouts) in 9 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old owned a 2.30 ERA before that stretch, but that figure has ballooned by over three runs in two weeks. As a result, Boyle will head back to Durham 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts against 21 walks across 36 2/3 frames. He had been scheduled to make his next start for the Rays on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians, but the club hasn't named a replacement yet.

Joe Boyle Expected to Join Rays Rotation

The expectation is that Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Joe Boyle will join the team's starting rotation after the club optioned right-hander Taj Bradley to Triple-A Durham this week, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Boyle has looked strong in his first year with the Rays in 2025, but he's only appeared in five games (one start), allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits (one homer) while walking six and striking out 18 in 19 innings pitched. The 25-year-old's lone start came in his first big-league outing of the year on April 13 against the Braves, when he threw five shutout innings with two walks and seven K's for the win. Boyle has the stuff (100 mph fastball and nasty slider) to be effective in the big leagues, but his walk rate has been an issue in the past. Now that he's getting a shot at a rotation spot, he's certainly worth a waiver-wire pickup for those looking for starting depth in deeper formats.

Joe Boyle Could Have Limited Role to Open Second Half

Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle could have a very limited role when the Rays open the second half with a weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles. During the final two weeks of the first half, the Rays deployed Boyle as a bulk relief option behind starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen, who was put on a strict innings limit. However, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reported that Rasmussen is expected to open the second half with a regular workload. As a result, Boyle will likely only pitch a limited amount out of the bullpen, or he could even be a candidate to return to Triple-A Durham. Through three outings in Tampa Bay this season, Boyle has tossed 14 innings to the tune of a 1.29 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP while holding a 15:5 K:BB. At Triple-A, Boyle struck out 96 batters through 73 innings pitched. Due to his strikeout upside, he is worth holding in deeper 12+ team leagues for the time being.

Joe Boyle Ineffective in Four Innings on Friday

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joe Boyle came on in bulk relief of Drew Rasmussen in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Red Sox, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out only one batter, but did not factor into the decision. Boyle came on in the third inning in relief of Rasmussen, which was expected after manager Kevin Cash stated that the team would execute this way for a few turns through the rotation in an attempt to limit Rasmussen's innings. Boyle had made two other appearances this season before Friday's, and had not allowed a run in either while striking out seven in both contests. The 25-year-old righty now owns a 1.29 ERA (4.03 xFIP) with a 0.71 WHIP, and a 15:5 K:BB through 14 IP. His next chance to pitch won't come until sometime after the All-Star break.

Joe Boyle Recalled

The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled right-hander Joe Boyle from Triple-A Durham and optioned lefty Joe Rock. Boyle is back in the majors for the first time since he posted an excellent start against the Atlanta Braves on April 13. He gave up two runs (both unearned) on no hits while striking out seven and walking two to earn the victory in that game. The 25-year-old has also held his own over a much larger sample size in the minors this season. Boyle has pitched to a microscopic 1.85 ERA with 96 strikeouts and 31 walks over 73 innings with Durham. It's unclear whether the Rays plan to start Boyle at some point before the All-Star break or use him in relief.

Joe Boyle Fans Eight in Win on Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight over five innings in Thursday's 8-4 win over Triple-A Omaha. Outside of allowing two home runs to Joey Wiemer, Boyle was quite good in this outing, generating 18 whiffs on 37 swings and stretching out to 88 pitches. The Rays' help in improving Boyle's control has allowed him to leverage his great stuff for plenty of strikeouts. He ranked second among all Triple-A starters in strikeout rate before this start. The 6-foot-8 right-hander has lowered his walk rate from 17.7 percent to 11.1 percent while also upping his zone rate from 48.3 percent to 51.4 percent. He could be a candidate to join the major-league rotation at any time, and his strikeout upside makes him worth a pickup in deeper leagues if that happens.

Joe Boyle Named International League Pitcher Of The Week

Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle has continued to impress at Triple-A Durham and was named International League Pitcher of the Week. On April 19, Boyle tossed six no-hit innings en route to earning his first victory of the season against Scranton. In this outing, Boyle struck out seven batters and served up just two walks. Through three total outings (14 innings), Boyle has struck out 17 batters and held a 1.29 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP. Boyle was given a look in the majors on April 13 and performed very well as he tossed five innings of two-run ball (zero earned) against the Atlanta Braves. Boyle is a name to monitor in deeper formats as the Rays may opt to give the 25-year-old an extended look in the majors if he continues to flash high strikeout upside at Triple-A.
