Yankees Decline Jonathan Loaisiga's 2026 Option

The New York Yankees declined to pick up right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga's (elbow) $5 million club option for the 2026 season on Wednesday, making him a free agent, a source told Jorge Castillo of ESPN. It's not much of a surprise after Loaisiga had another injury-plagued season that limited him to just 30 relief appearances (29 2/3 innings pitched). He allowed 15 runs (14 runs) on 34 hits (seven homers) while walking 10 and striking out 25. The 31-year-old Nicaraguan picked up one save. A back injury and a flexor strain in his right elbow kept him out for the final two months of the season, and he eventually underwent surgery on his right elbow. The good news is that Loaisiga is expected to be ready for spring training, but it remains to be seen where he'll be pitching. Loasiga has become a full-time reliever since 2021 and won't have much fantasy appeal, if any, regardless of where he lands.

Jonathan Loaisiga Done for 2025 Season

New York Yankees relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) will miss the rest of the 2025 season, according to manager Aaron Boone. Loaisiga has been sidelined since the beginning of August due a right flexor strain. The right-hander won't pitch again this season, but has avoided having surgery. That means, Loaisiga should be ready to go for the beginning of the 2026 season. He'll finish this campaign with a 4.25 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and a 25/10 K/BB ratio across 29.2 innings.

Jonathan Loaisiga Battling Soreness in Arm, Will Undergo MRI

New York Yankees reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (back/elbow/triceps) is dealing with soreness in his right elbow/triceps area and will undergo an MRI, manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday. Loaisiga, who has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 2 with back stiffness, had been on a rehab assignment and targeting a Sept. 1 return. That won't happen in the wake of this setback, though, and it's all the more concerning given that Loaisiga has undergone multiple elbow surgeries in his career. He missed almost all of the 2024 season after having surgery on a torn UCL that April and didn't make his debut this year until mid-May. Loaisiga posted a 4.25 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP, 25:10 K:BB, and seven holds in 29 2/3 innings before he went on the IL.

Jonathan Loaisiga Heads to 15-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees announced that they have placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (back) on the 15-day injured list with right mid-back tightness, retroactive to Aug. 2. The team activated right-hander Luis Gil (lat) from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move. After missing almost all of last season because of elbow surgery, Loaisiga has returned this year to post a 4.25 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, 25:10 K:BB, and seven holds in 29 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old righty now joins fellow late-game options Fernando Cruz (oblique) and Mark Leiter Jr. (leg) on the IL, though the latter is nearing a return.

Jonathan Loaisiga Battling Illness

MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports that New York Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga (illness) was unavailable for Wednesday's 7-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds due to an illness. The 30-year-old yielded three earned runs to Cincinnati on Tuesday and retired a lone batter before exiting with a trainer. It was easy to assume the worst at that point, but fortunately, he isn't dealing with an injury and could rejoin the Yankees as early as Friday after their scheduled day off on Thursday. Loaisiga has a 4.32 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 16 appearances, though his underlying metrics are far more appealing and point to some positive regression if he can keep it up (3.27 xERA).

Jonathan Loaisiga Exits with Injury

New York Yankees reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (undisclosed) exited Tuesday's outing against the hosting Cincinnati Reds with an undisclosed injury. The 30-year-old was summoned to protect a three-run lead in the bottom of the seventh and was able to retire Spencer Steer before running into trouble. Loaisiga walked the next batter, and yielded back-to-back one-pitch singles before a double cleared the bases and tied the game at three apiece. He'd then exit with a trainer. There's been no news on what caused him to leave early, so expect an update in short order after New York runs him through the necessary testing.

Jonathan Loaisiga Moving Rehab To Triple-A

New York Yankees relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) is set to move his rehab assignment to Triple-A. Loaisiga has been on the 15-day injured list after undergoing an internal brace procedure in 2024. Loaisiga began his rehab assignment with Low-A and has logged three innings of work. Across this stint, the right-hander has allowed two hits and one run. Max Goodman of the NJ Advance Media reported that Loaisiga will likely remain at Triple-A through next weekend. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progress as he appears to be in contention to return to the majors before the end of the month. The 30-year-old has dealt with numerous injuries over the past few seasons but has been an effective high-leverage option when on the bump. During the 2021 season, Loaisiga posted a strong 2.17 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP across 70 2/3 innings. When cleared to return, he should have a high-leverage role in the Yankee bullpen.

Jonathan Loaisiga Still Weeks Away From A Return

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) is still a few weeks away from joining the team. Loaisiga will have to get in back-to-back rehab appearances before he's activated from the injured list. When he does return, though, Boone doesn't necessarily view him as a one-inning guy out of the bullpen. The 30-year-old veteran was scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Single-A Tampa last Saturday. Loaisiga is attempting to return from an internal-brace procedure that he had on his right elbow just over a year ago. When he's finally ready, he could be a high-leverage option at the back end of New York's bullpen He has only seven saves in his seven years in the big leagues, but he proved in 2023 that he could be a valuable member of the bullpen after posting a 3.06 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 17 appearances in relief.

Jonathan Loaisiga Nearing Rehab Assignment

New York Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) threw live batting practice at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and again on Wednesday. He is scheduled to throw another live batting practice session on Saturday and Sunday in Tampa, Fla., as he nears a minor-league rehab assignment. The 30-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on March 24 as he recovers from right UCL surgery, and he's not expected to return to the Yankees until around late May or early June. Loaisiga had an internal-brace procedure last April but is getting close to pitching in games. The Nicaraguan hurler has thrown only 21 2/3 innings in the big leagues since 2022 due to elbow issues, but he could return to being a high-leverage reliever in the Bronx if he can bounce back in 2025. For now, fantasy managers can continue to ignore him in all formats.

Jonathan Loaisiga Targeting End Of May

New York Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) said he is targeting an end of May/beginning of June return this year, according to the New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. Loaisiga hasn't been able to escape elbow issues the last two years and tore his right UCL early last year. However, the 30-year-old veteran didn't need a full Tommy John procedure and could return to the Yankees at the tail end of the first half of the season, barring any setbacks in his recovery. The Nicaraguan hurler has only appeared in 20 games out of the bullpen the last two years for the Yankees because of his injuries, although he could play a key middle-relief role in the Bronx in the second half in 2025 if he's healthy. Loaisiga has pitched in high-leverage spots for the Yankees in the past, although his lack of strikeout upside doesn't make him all that attractive in deep fantasy leagues.
