Yankees Claim Jordan Groshans Off Waivers From Marlins

The New York Yankees claimed infielder Jordan Groshans off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday and designated left-hander Matt Krook for assignment in a corresponding move to make room for Groshans on the 40-man roster. Groshans, a former first-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2018 made his major-league debut in 2022 and went 16-for-61 (.262) with a home run, two RBI and nine runs scored. The right-handed hitter disappointed in the minors in 2023 with a .244/.339/.330 slash line, six home runs, 60 RBI and 60 runs scored in 125 games played for Triple-A Jacksonville. The 24-year-old will hope for better results with a change of scenery, and he'll give the Yankees depth all over the infield in the minors to open up the 2024 campaign. Groshans makes plenty of contact but has limited power upside.

Jordan Groshans Optioned To Triple-A

The Miami Marlins optioned shortstop prospect Jordan Groshans to Triple-A. Miami acquired him at the deadline from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for relievers Zach Pop and Anthony Bass. A former top prospect in the Blue Jays system, Groshans finds himself dealing with another setback. Injuries and the pandemic have stunted the development of the 2018 first-round pick. The 23-year-old debuted for the Marlins late last season, slashing .262/.308/.311 in 17 games. He didn't move the needle in spring training, holding a .675 OPS in 17 at-bats. With the Marlins having a surplus of infield depth, the path to fantasy relevance for Groshans is narrow.

Marlins Calling Up Jordan Groshans

The Miami Marlins will select infielder Jordan Groshans' contract from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of the team's game on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to sources. Groshans, the team's No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was hitting .301/.399/.416 with an .814 OPS, two home runs, 10 RBI, 14 runs scored and a stolen base in 31 games for Jacksonville to earn the call-up. The 22-year-old was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline early last month. The former first-rounder is worth picking up down the stretch in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, as he should see enough playing time the rest of the way to contribute in those formats. Groshans has recently become more of a hit over power guy, and he hit just three long balls in 103 combined game with Jacksonville, Triple-A Buffalo and Single-A Dunedin.

Jordan Groshans Heading To Miami

The Miami Marlins are acquiring infield prospect Jordan Groshans from the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in exchange for right-handed relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop and an unnamed smaller piece. Groshans is a top-100 prospect and was ranked as the Blue Jays' No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, before the trade. The 22-year-old is currently a shortstop, but he could make the move to the hot corner eventually. In 67 games for Triple-A Buffalo this year, he hit .250/.348/.296 with one home run, 24 RBI, 30 runs scored and two stolen bases in 279 plate appearances. Groshans was once believed to have plus potential power, but that hasn't been the case in recent seasons, as he's gone deep just eight times in the last two seasons.

Jordan Groshans Joins Low-A On Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Jordan Groshans (oblique) has reported to Low-A Dunedin. The 22-year-old suffered an oblique injury this spring and he is in the midst of working his way back. Low-A will serve as something of a rehab assignment for him as he will likely settle in at Double-A or Triple-A once he's healthy. Last year, over 75 games at Double-A, he slashed .291/.367/.450 with seven home runs, 40 RBI and 46 runs. He is rated as the Blue Jays' No. 3 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and there's a chance we'll see him in the majors later on this year.

Jordan Groshans Returns With A Bang At Double-A

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop prospect Jordan Groshans returned to the Double-A lineup on Thursday for the first time since May 18. The young infielder, who was in the designated hitter's role, has been dealing with a sore back. He shook off the rust to go 2-for-5 and had a two-run home run in the first inning. Despite the layoff, the 21-year-old infielder extended his hit streak to seven games. The organization will be happy to see Groshans stay healthy from here on out. He was hitting .337 in 23 A-ball games in 2019 when his season came to an early end due to a foot injury. Like every other minor leaguer, he then lost traditional development time in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Jordan Groshans Among Toronto's Top Prospects In Player Pool

The Toronto Blue Jays included each of their top-five prospects, per MLB Pipeline, in their initial 58-man player pool. They include right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson, shortstop Jordan Groshans, right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson, right-hander Alek Manoah and catcher Alejandro Kirk. Austin Martin, the fifth overall pick in the draft, could join the group once he signs. Groshans hasn't played above Single-A, but this will be his opportunity to continue his development in an MLB environment. Thornton was looking like a lock for a rotation spot earlier this spring, and he should see work at least out of the bullpen in 2020. His triple-digit arm was the reason why he was ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect in baseball entering this season.
