Jose Caballero Shipped to the Bronx

The New York Yankees are acquiring infielder Jose Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays. The 28-year-old infielder has seen time at numerous positions while in Tampa Bay and will likely operate in a multi-positional depth role with the Yankees. This season, Caballero has appeared in 86 games and posted a .226/.328/.312 slash line with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs, and an impressive 34 stolen bases. His stolen base total is the most in the American League. While the 28-year-old carries a low .294 xwOBA, .223 xBA, and a .320 xSLG, he sits in the 84th percentile in Range, which could earn him playing time. For now, fantasy managers should consider him as a one-category option for stolen bases in deeper standard leagues. Anthony Volpe should continue to see most of the starts at shortstop for the time being.

Danny Jansen, Jose Caballero Sitting on Sunday

Tampa Bay Rays catcher Danny Jansen and infielder/outfielder Jose Caballero are not in Sunday's lineup when they conclude a series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Jansen has started in each of the previous two contests. During this stretch, the backstop went 2-for-7 at the plate with a double. As a result, Ben Rortvedt will get the nod behind the dish and bat in the nine-hole. Caballero has only sat on the bench once over their last 10 contests. During this stretch, the utility man has posted a strong .257/.316/.371 line with an impressive six stolen bases. Fantasy managers should expect both Jansen and Caballero to return to the lineup on Monday when they face Chris Paddack and the Minnesota Twins. Caballero will be replaced by Taylor Walls, who will cover shortstop.

Jose Caballero Starting In Right Field On Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays infielder/outfielder Jose Caballero is starting in right field and batting sixth in Thursday's series finale against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander Kevin Gausman. Caballero has been playing regularly for the Rays all over the diamond, as he's started four games in right field, one at third base, one at second and one at shortstop in the last eight games. However, the 28-year-old's playing time could start to dry up somewhat now that Josh Lowe (oblique) is back from the injured list. It's not like he's been outstanding on offense so far in 2025, as the Panamanian utility man enters Thursday's game with a .239/.327/.352 slash line with a homer, 12 RBI, eight runs scored and nine stolen bases. Caballero is primarily valuable in deeper fantasy leagues for his positional versatility and his speed.

Junior Caminero, Jose Caballero, Christopher Morel, Danny Jansen Resting

The Tampa Bay Rays are giving a handful of their regular starters a rest in Sunday's series finale against the division-rival New York Yankees in the Bronx, as third baseman Junior Caminero, utility man Jose Caballero, outfielder Christopher Morel and catcher Danny Jansen are out of the starting lineup. Curtis Mead is starting at third base and batting sixth, Taylor Walls is at shortstop and hitting ninth, Travis Jankowski is in left field and batting seventh, and Ben Rortvedt is doing the catching and hitting eighth against Yankees right-hander Will Warren. Caminero gets the day of rest after starting in each of the team's last 25 games. The 21-year-old prospect has gone just 1-for-16 in his last four starts and is hitting .240 on the season, so it's a good time for him to get a little breather. None of Tampa's replacements on Sunday are particularly intriguing from a DFS standpoint against Warren.

Jose Caballero Returning On Saturday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Jose Caballero (foot) is returning to the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon when the Rays face the New York Mets. The 28-year-old fouled a ball of his foot on Thursday but received negative results on his X-rays. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status but seeing him return to the lineup quickly suggests this injury was not serious. Last season, the 28-year-old logged a career-high 139 contests with the Tampa Bay Rays. He held a .227/.283/.347 with 24 doubles and nine home runs. Caballero flashed elite speed as he swiped 44 bags, which were the most in the American League. However, with the Rays bringing Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) in the offseason, Caballero may see a decrease in playing time and will only carry value in deeper AL-only formats.

Jose Caballero Could Return To Game Action On Saturday

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that infielder Jose Caballero (foot), who suffered a bruised left foot in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers, was "moving around much better" during a workout in camp on Friday and could return to a spring training contest on Saturday. Caballero fouled a ball off his left foot on Thursday and was removed as a precaution, and it sounds like he'll be just fine after X-rays came back negative. The Panamanian infielder led the league with 44 stolen bases and 16 times caught stealing in 2024 in his first year with Tampa, but his fantasy value is on the decline this year, mainly because he's likely ticketed for a utility infield role for the Rays now that prospect Junior Caminero will be an everyday player in 2025. Still, Caballero can be a late-round target for his speed in AL-only leagues.

X-Rays Come Back Negative On Jose Caballero

The X-rays came back negative on Tampa Bay Rays infielder Jose Caballero (foot). Caballero was lifted from Thursday's Grapefruit League contest after fouling a ball off his left foot. However, the infielder was able to avoid a serious injury and should be viewed as day-to-day. Fantasy managers should expect the team to exercise caution with him and may opt to rest him for a few days. Last summer, the 28-year-old logged a career-high 138 games at the MLB level. Caballero held a .227/.283/.347 line with just nine home runs. However, he provided his fantasy value with his speed as he stole 44 bags, which was the most in the American League. Fantasy managers should expect Caballero to operate in a depth role this season as the Rays signed Ha-Seong Kim (elbow) to be the primary shortstop. However, given his speed and strong defensive play, he should still find himself in the starting lineup quite often.

Jose Caballero Leaves Game With Foot Injury

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Jose Caballero (foot) fouled a ball off his foot in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers and left the contest, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. Caballero will surely go for testing to determine whether he's dealing with a serious injury, so stay tuned for more news later on Thursday. The 28-year-old native of Panama led the league with 44 stolen bases and was also caught a league-leading 16 times while slashing .227/.283/.347 with nine home runs, 44 RBI and 53 runs scored in 139 games and 483 plate appearances in his first season with the Rays. He's mainly attractive to fantasy managers for his positional versatility and his wheels on the basepaths. With Junior Caminero expected to be a regular starter in 2025, it's possible that Caballero becomes more of a utility infielder in 2025, which would obviously be a big hit to his fantasy value.

Yandy Diaz, Jose Caballero Out On Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays infielders Yandy Diaz and Jose Caballero and outfielder Jonny DeLuca are all out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Diaz is on the bench for the third time in the last four days, but it doesn't appear he's dealing with any sort of injury. The 33-year-old hasn't been as good as he was last year when he won the American League batting title with a .330 average, but he's still been one of Tampa's best hitters with a .282/.342/.417 slash line with 14 homers and 65 RBI in 143 games played. Jonathan Aranda is playing first and batting cleanup, with Taylor Walls at short and batting ninth, and Jose Siri in center and in the seven-hole against Tigers right-hander Reese Olson. Aranda recently homered in three straight games and has become a regular down the stretch, hitting .262 (16-for-61) with five homers and nine RBI in 20 games in September.

Jose Caballero Retreats To Bench Versus Blue Jays

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Jose Caballero and outfielder Jonny DeLuca are both out of the starting lineup on Saturday at Tropicana Field against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Taylor Walls will make the start at the 6 for Tampa and will hit ninth, while Jose Siri starts in center field and bats seventh against Blue Jays rookie right-hander Yariel Rodriguez. Caballero does lead the league with 44 stolen bases (and also 14 times caught stealing), but he has only nine home runs and 44 RBI on the year in 133 games in his first year in Tampa and has struggled at the plate of late. The 28-year-old Panama native has gone 11-for-49 (.225) in 18 games in September with no homers, two doubles, three RBI, seven steals and 17 strikeouts in 53 plate appearances. Walls and Siri have four combined at-bats against Rodriguez this year and have gone hitless.
