Luis Arraez Not Worthy of a Big Deal in Free Agency?

ESPN's Jeff Passan writes that in the minds of MLB executives, free-agent infielder Luis Arraez doesn't "warrant a big-money deal." Arraez will be one of the youngest players available this offseason at 28 years old. He has won three straight batting titles and led the National League in hits in 2025. However, "teams can't help but see Arraez for everything he isn't." The Venezuelan isn't great on defense, isn't a great baserunner, and doesn't have much power. He struck out only 21 times in 675 plate appearances this year, the lowest strikeout rate since Tony Gwynn struck out 15 times in 577 plate appearances 30 years ago. Contact-oriented hitters are still valuable in today's game, just not as much as they were, say, 20-30 years ago. Arraez is going to land somewhere, but he's probably not going to have offers flooding in, and he's not all that attractive in fantasy, either.

Luis Arraez Returning for Padres in Series Opener

San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez (head) is starting at second base and will hit second in Tuesday's series opener in New York against the Mets and right-hander Clay Holmes. Arraez was hit in the head by a throw during warmups on Saturday and got the day off in Sunday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies, but he's back in there at Citi Field after a travel day on Monday. As always, the 28-year-old offers virtually zero power, but he does make contact often and helps fantasy managers with a high batting average. He's been swinging a hot bat for the Friars of late, so you'll want to get him back into your starting lineups. Arraez has gone 7-for-17 in his last four games and is batting a cool .333 in 12 games in September. He has hit .600 with a 1.714 OPS and two RBI in just five career at-bats against Holmes.

Luis Arraez Takes a Seat on Sunday With Head Injury

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez (head) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Arraez was removed during Saturday's game after getting hit in the head by a ball during pre-inning warmups. The team has decided to take the cautious approach and hold him out of this game. For now, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. Ryan O'Hearn will cover first base while Jake Cronenworth plays second base during Sunday's contest. The expectation is that Arraez will be back in the lineup early next week.

Luis Arraez With a Multi-Hit Game on Tuesday

San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI, and four runs scored in Tuesday's 11-1 win over the Dodgers. Arraez's slash line in 2025 now sits at .281/.314/.405 with three home runs, 25 RBI, three stolen bases, and 31 runs scored. Arraez is a career .319 hitter and a three-time batting title winner in his now sixth MLB season, so fantasy managers should expect him to pick it up as we get into the heart of the baseball season. Arraez continues to bat at the top of the order in an offense that features Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jackson Merrill. Look for him to continue to be a reliable asset in most formats. He ranks in the 100th percentile in whiff rate and strikeout percentage, making him a dependable player who can put the ball in play and score a lot of runs if hitters behind him are driving him in.

Luis Arraez Serving as DH on Friday

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez (knee) is serving as the designated hitter for the Friars and is batting second in Friday's series opener on the road in Milwaukee against Brewers right-hander Chad Patrick. Arraez was pulled in Thursday's loss to the San Francisco Giants due to posterior knee soreness, but the 28-year-old two-time batting champion is back in the fold a day later. Gavin Sheets is starting at first base on Friday night and will hit fifth in the batting order. Arraez doesn't really help in fantasy besides providing a high average, as he has very little speed and power. However, with the shortest swing in the league, he still makes tons of contact and is currently batting .282 (62-for-22) with three homers, 21 RBI, 25 runs scored and two steals in 55 games. With an xBA of just .274, though, this could be the first time since 2021 that Arraez doesn't hit over .300 on the year.

Luis Arraez Day-to-Day With Knee Soreness

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez (knee) is being considered day-to-day by manager Mike Shildt after he was pulled from Thursday's 3-2 loss to the division-rival San Francisco Giants due to posterior knee soreness. Arraez injured his knee running to first base in the sixth inning and was replaced in the bottom of the frame by Jake Cronenworth, who shifted over from second base. Before leaving, the 28-year-old two-time batting champion went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single and a run scored. Fantasy managers will want to check back to see if Arraez is able to play in Friday's series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cronenworth would likely see most of the action at first if Arraez ends up missing more time, with Jose Iglesias and Tyler Wade being options at the keystone. While Arraez still squares the ball up better than anyone in the league with his short stroke, he is a liability everywhere else in fantasy.

Luis Arraez Out for Series Opener Versus Marlins

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez is out of the starting lineup for Monday's series opener at Petco Park against his former team, the Miami Marlins. With Arraez resting, Jake Cronenworth will start at first base and bat sixth, with Jose Iglesias starting at second base and batting eighth against Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers. It will be Arraez's first day off since returning from the injured list on April 29. Not only are the Padres facing a left-handed pitcher, but the 28-year-old two-time batting champion could use a mental day off after going hitless in his last 12 at-bats in the three-game series against the Atlanta Braves. Neither Cronenworth nor Iglesias are particularly attractive DFS options against Weathers on Monday night. Cronenworth hit his fourth homer of the year on Sunday but is batting .208 (5-for-24) with one of his four long balls on the year against lefties.

Luis Arraez Expected To Return On Tuesday

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez (concussion) is expected to be activated from the seven-day concussion injured list on Tuesday before the team's series opener against the division-rival San Francisco Giants at Petco Park. Arraez was placed on the IL early last week after colliding with Mauricio Dubon last Sunday, but he has recovered well from the scary collision and should be back in SD's injury-riddled starting lineup against the Giants. Fantasy managers will want to double-check the lineup before reinserting him in their lineups. When Arraez returns, Gavin Sheets should revert to being the team's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitchers. After another slow start in the first week-plus of the season, the 28-year-old Arraez has recovered and is now slashing .287/.330/.425 with three homers, seven RBI, two steals and nine runs. Arraez doesn't offer much outside of a high batting average.

Luis Arraez Going On Seven-Day Injured List

San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arraez (concussion) is being placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Monday, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. Arraez is in the league's concussion protocol after colliding with Houston Astros utility man Mauricio Dubon at first base in Sunday's victory. In a scary scene, the 28-year-old two-time batting champion had to be put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital on Sunday. The good news is that Arraez rejoined the team after Sunday's game and was seen walking in the clubhouse. He said that everything checked out fine at the hospital. Arraez will still be forced to miss a week of action, but there's a chance he could be ready to go when he's eligible to come off the IL. In the meantime, SD could use a combination of Connor Joe, Yuli Gurriel and Gavin Sheets at first base and designated hitter. Sheets is at first and Oscar Gonzalez is the DH for Monday's series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Luis Arraez Carted Off In First Inning

San Diego Padres designated hitter Luis Arraez (undisclosed) exited his team's outing against the Houston Astros in the first inning on Sunday. Arraez was involved in a scary collision at first base after attempting to bunt teammate Fernando Tatis Jr. to second base. The 28-year-old hustled down the line to beat out the throw and collided with Astros' second baseman Mauricio Dubon, who was covering on the play. It appeared that Arraez crashed into Dubon's shoulder and immediately crumpled to the ground. Eventually, his head and neck were stabilized, and he was carted off. Reportedly, the All-Star DH was transported to Houston Methodist Hospital, and his condition is stable. He is responsive and has control of his extremities. Expect an update on his status soon.
