Keaton Winn Stumbles in Save Opportunity, No Longer Worth Rostering?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Keaton Winn entered a save situation on Monday night, but he gave up three runs to the Nationals and took the loss. He got James Wood to start the inning, but he left the game after a double, a hit-by-pitch, and a pair of singles turned a 3-1 lead into a 4-3 deficit. He fell to 2-2 with the loss and was charged with three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout. His blown save spoiled a great start from Logan Webb and caused Winn's ERA to climb to 3.23 in his 30 2/3 innings this year. Winn has allowed a run in four of his last six appearances and could lose ground to Caleb Kilian in the Giants' closer timeshare. For now, Kilian seems to be the relief pitcher to target in San Francisco, although the shaky bullpen is a high-risk situation overall.

Keaton Winn Earns First Save, Worth a Look in Deeper Leagues?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Keaton Winn got the call to close out his team's 1-0 win over the Brewers on Wednesday night. Winn came in with one out in the eighth inning and two runners on base. He got pinch-hitter Gary Sanchez to ground into a double play, and he returned for the ninth inning and worked around a leadoff double by Christian Yelich to secure the one-run win. The 28-year-old righty has 11 holds in his 26 games this season and earned his first save in Wednesday's win. He has a solid 2.30 ERA and 2.77 FIP, and he has been one of the Giants' best options out of the bullpen. Manager Tony Vitello has used a closer committee all year long, so Winn isn't likely to lock up the full-time job alone. However, he seems to be trending into a bigger role and makes sense as a waiver wire option in deep leagues if you are searching for saves and solid relief innings.

Keaton Winn Optioned To Triple-A

The San Francisco Giants have optioned right-handed pitcher Keaton Winn to Triple-A Sacramento. Winn was competing for a spot in the starting rotation but ultimately fell short. Across five innings in the Cactus League, Winn allowed two earned runs and held a modest 1.40 WHIP. Last summer, the 27-year-old logged a career-high 55 2/3 innings to the tune of a 7.16 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP. During this stint, Winn tallied 48 strikeouts and posted an 8.4 percent walk rate. He generated a high 5.56 xERA, which placed him in the third percentile among qualified pitchers. However, he was able to generate ground balls at an impressive 50.9 percent rate. With Winn opening the season at Sacramento, fantasy managers should expect Hayden Birdsong, Kyle Harrison, and Landen Roupp to continue to compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Keaton Winn Competing For Rotation Spot

San Francisco Giants pitcher Keaton Winn (elbow) appears to be a name being discussed as a possible starting rotation option. Winn started 12 games for the Giants last season before suffering a nerve issue in his elbow that ended his season. The right-hander has been throwing in spring training, but hasn't actually played in any contests. Winn posted an ugly 7.12 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP during his 12 starts last season. He wasn't exactly a solid option in the rotation, but it seems like the team is willing to give him another chance. If not, Winn might move into a long relief role or swingman out of the bullpen. Fantasy managers can use a wait-and-see approach here.

Keaton Winn To Have Season-Ending Surgery

San Francisco Giants right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) will have season-ending surgery on Monday and will have an ulnar-nerve transposition. Winn has been on the injured list since June with a nerve issue in his right elbow and he'll now be forced to miss the rest of the 2024 campaign. Because of the nature of his surgery, there's a good chance that the 26-year-old won't be ready for the start of spring training next year or the 2025 regular season. Before his right-elbow injury cropped up, Winn went 3-8 with a rough 7.16 ERA (4.82 FIP) and 1.37 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 20 walks in 55 1/3 innings over 12 starts in his second year in the big leagues with the Gigantes. Anyone that was holding onto him in deep NL-only leagues can now let go.

Keaton Winn Continues His Throwing Progression

San Francisco Giants right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) allowed five runs over 2 2/3 innings in his June 20 start against the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field before going on the 15-day injured list with an elbow issue on June 22 (retroactive to June 21). It was the second time Winn has been sidelined in 2024 with an arm issue, as he previously missed more than 20 games with a right-forearm strain. An MRI exam showed no structural damage, and Winn has continued his throwing progression in San Francisco. There's no timetable for Winn's return, and the 26-year-old won't be guaranteed a rotation spot when he's healthy after going 3-8 with a 7.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 48:20 K:BB in 55 1/3 innings this year. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can continue to leave Winn on the waiver wire.

Keaton Winn Lands On 15-Day Injured List

The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 21) on Saturday with right-elbow inflammation. Winn will head to the shelf after allowing five earned runs on five hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out two in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field in Alabama on Thursday. It's the second time that the 26-year-old has been on the injured list already this year, and it leaves the Giants' starting rotation dangerously thin. It's unclear who will replace Winn in the rotation as we head closer to the All-Star break next month. Winn hasn't even been much of an option in NL-only leagues in 2024, as he's gone 3-8 with a bloated 7.16 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 20 walks in 55 1/3 innings over his 12 starts in his second year in the big leagues.

Keaton Winn Could Rejoin Rotation Soon

San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday that right-hander Keaton Winn (forearm) is "getting close" and could be an option for the team the next turn through the starting rotation. Winn walked off the mound with team trainer Dave Groeschner after his velocity began to dip in the fifth inning in the loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 14. MRI results showed a mild strain of his right forearm. Winn was able to throw two bullpen sessions recently, most recently with 45 pitches on Monday. The 26-year-old could come off the 15-day injured list sooner than later, potentially avoiding a minor-league rehab assignment since his injury wasn't all that serious. If Winn avoids a rehab assignment, his next start could come in a plus matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks on next Monday or Tuesday. Winn was 3-6 with a bloated 6.17 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in nine starts before getting hurt.

Keaton Winn Placed On Injured List

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Keaton Winn (forearm) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday. Giants manager Bob Melvin told reporters earlier in the week that Winn was dealing with a mild strain and he'd likely be placed on the injured list. As a result, right-hander Mason Black has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. The hard-throwing righty has made two lackluster starts for the Giants this season. Black has all the tools to be a legitimate option at the big league level. He has a favorable matchup against the Colorado Rockies lineup, but remains a shaky streaming choice.

Keaton Winn Dealing With Forearm Tightness

San Francisco Giants right-hander Keaton Winn (forearm) left his start early on Tuesday against the visiting division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers during the fifth inning due to right-forearm tightness. Before leaving, Winn's struggles in 2024 continued, as he gave up five more earned runs on five hits (one home run) while walking three and striking out four to raise his season ERA to 6.17. The 26-year-old is now 3-6 on the year after the loss and could be headed to the injured list soon, depending on what the results of his MRI exam on Wednesday show. His next start is scheduled to come on Sunday in a favorable matchup against the Colorado Rockies in San Francisco, but it remains to be seen if he'll be able to pitch then. If Winn is forced to miss more than one start, the Giants could elect to bring back rookie Mason Black.
