Luis Gil to Start Game 1 of ALDS Against Toronto

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will make the start in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday in Toronto against the division-rival Blue Jays, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. "He's ready for this," manager Aaron Boone said. Gil was left off the playoff roster for the wild-card series against the Boston Red Sox, with the Yankees rolling with lefties Max Fried and Carlos Rodon and rookie-right-hander Cam Schlittler to start three games. With the Yankees advancing past Boston, they'll use Gil to kick things off in the ALDS. The 27-year-old Dominican only made 11 starts in 2025 due to injury, but he was good when he pitched, going 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 41:33 K:BB in 57 innings. He led the league with 77 walks last year, so Gil is going to need to display better command in the ALDS to avoid getting a quick hook. In a start against Toronto on Sept. 6 at home, Gil picked up the win, allowing just one earned run in six innings, although he walked four and only struck out one.

Luis Gil Left Off Yankees Wild-Card Roster After Shortened Season

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil was left off the Wild Card roster despite a strong showing in limited action this year. The 27-year-old posted a 3.32 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts across 11 starts. Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, was edged out by Carlos Rodon and Cam Schlittler for Wild Card spots. His late return from a right lat strain, which delayed his season debut until August 3, left little time to build on his case.

Luis Gil Struggles in Season Debut

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (0-1) took the loss in a rough season debut against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Returning after missing four months with a high-grade lat strain, Gil lasted 3 1/3 innings and yielded five runs on five hits with four walks against three strikeouts in a 7-3 defeat. Gil threw 77 pitches, just 44 for strikes, and his velocity topped out at a game-high 98.5 mph. While Sunday didn't go well for Gil, there are still high hopes for him after he took home AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2024. Gil went 15-7 and posted a 3.50 ERA with 171:77 K:BB in 151 2/3 innings last season. He was an asset for both the Yankees and fantasy managers a year ago, but it's anyone's guess if he'll regain that form down the stretch. The 27-year-old's second start is scheduled for Saturday against a tough Houston Astros team.

Luis Gil Activated, Starting Sunday

The New York Yankees have officially activated right-hander Luis Gil (lat) from the 60-day injured list for his season debut against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. To make room for Gil, the Yankees placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (back) on the 15-day injured list with right mid-back tightness, retroactive to Aug. 2. Gil suffered a high-grade lat strain during spring training, which has prevented him from following up on last season's AL Rookie of the Year-winning effort. The 27-year-old earned the honor after going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and 171:77 K:BB over 151 2/3 innings. After throwing 75 pitches in his final rehab start, Gil is ready to slide back into New York's rotation and take over for the just-released Marcus Stroman.

Luis Gil Set to Make 2025 Debut on Sunday

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (lat) is set to make his first MLB start of the year this Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Gil made four rehab appearances between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Somerset in July. In his last outing on Tuesday in Triple-A, he threw 75 pitches while striking out seven batters and allowing one earned run on three hits. It's likely that the Yankees don't push him far beyond the 75-80 pitch mark on Sunday, but the reigning American League Rookie of the Year will be a big boost to a Yankees rotation that has lost Clarke Schmidt and Gerrit Cole for the season. In 2023, Gil had a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings pitched. If he's available in your league, he is a recommended player to pick up. At this point, it's unclear if the Yankees will go to a six-man rotation or move Cam Schlittler, Marcus Stroman, or Will Warren to the bullpen or Triple-A.

Luis Gil Could Make Season Debut on Sunday

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone told Talkin' Yankees that right-hander Luis Gil (lat) is expected to throw 75 pitches in his minor-league rehab start on Tuesday, and if all goes well, he'll be lined up to make his first major-league start on Sunday in Miami against the Marlins. Tuesday will be Gil's fourth rehab start, and potentially his last if everything goes well. The 27-year-old should be picked up in fantasy leagues if he's floating around the waiver wire after winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2024. He has been out all season in 2025 due to a strained right lat and has posted a 7.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 17 strikeouts and six walks in 10 innings in his three rehab starts with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. While Gil can help down the stretch, fantasy managers also shouldn't expect him to be as good as he was in 2024.

Luis Gil Makes a Rehab Start

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil (lat) started on Wednesday for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He went 3 1/3 innings while giving up four earned runs on four hits and issuing three walks in 67 pitches. He did have four strikeouts, but continues to refine his control. Before the outing, manager Aaron Boone said the team had not decided if this would be Gil's final rehab outing, but that decision should come in the next few days. He hasn't been dominant in his work in the minors, but the 27-year-old righty is nearing his season debut, which should be a boost for the Yankees' rotation. Last year, Gil earned the AL Rookie of the Year Award by going 15-7 in 29 games with a 3.50 ERA, 4.14 FIP, and 10.15 K/9. The Yankees will hope he returns to that form for their playoff chase in the coming weeks.

Luis Gil Throws 57 Pitches in Latest Rehab Outing

New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Luis Gil (lat) completed 57 pitches in his latest rehab outing with Double-A Somerset on Friday evening. In this outing, Gil was able to log 3 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He allowed two hits, two walks, and struck out seven. In his first rehab outing, Gil also tossed 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball with six punchouts. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he appears to be nearing the end of his rehab stint. He will likely need to make one appearance with Triple-A and increase his pitch count once again before being activated off the 60-day IL. The 27-year-old has been sidelined with a high-grade lat strain through the entire first half. Last season, Gil was effective on the bump, holding a 3.50 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP. He is worth stashing ahead of his activation in all standard leagues.

Luis Gil One Step Closer to a Return

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (lat) made a pitching appearance in a game for the first time since October 2024, allowing two hits, a walk, and an earned run while striking out six across 3 1/3 innings. Gil continues to recover from a lat strain and was pulled after 50 pitches. He will likely need a few more rehab outings as the Yankees could consider activating him from the injured list once he reaches 75 pitches. If not, 90 pitches would be the return threshold. Gil posted a 3.50 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 151 2/3 innings with 171 strikeouts last season. Fantasy managers should continue to stash Gil as he could rejoin the Yankees' rotation by the end of July.

Luis Gil Fans Six in First Rehab Outing

New York Yankees starter Luis Gil (lat) was sharp in his first rehab outing as he works his way back from a lat injury that has prevented him from pitching in the big leagues so far in 2025. Gil got the start for Double-A Somerset and threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, a walk, and an earned run while striking out six. Gil was removed from the game after 50 pitches, so he'll likely need at least a few more rehab appearances before rejoining the Yankees. The 27-year-old flamethrower won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2024, going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings (29 starts). There's a clear spot for him in the Yankees' rotation now that fellow starter Clarke Schmidt has been lost for the year due to Tommy John surgery.
