Luis Patiño News
San Diego Padres relief pitchers Wandy Peralta and Luis Patino are both dealing with visa issues as pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training. Padres manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Sunday about the visa issues for the two aforementioned arms but did not expand beyond that. It's a fairly common issue with foreign players and it should be sorted out soon enough to give Peralta and Patino plenty of time to ramp up for the regular season. Peralta is coming off an excellent season with the New York Yankees in which he registered a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 51:30 K/BB ratio to go along with four saves over 54 innings of relief. Patino, who started his professional career with the Padres, was optioned by the Rays last season before being traded to the Chicago White Sox for cash. The Sox designated him for assignment back in December before the Padres claimed him off waivers. He hasn't shown much in the majors so far (5.02 ERA, 1.496 WHIP in 136 1/3 career innings) but is still just 24 years old. Both players have a shot to contribute to the San Diego bullpen this season.
Right-hander Luis Patino was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Patino was released earlier in the week by the Chicago White Sox. The former top prospect threw 21 2/3 innings last season, compiling a 4.57 ERA and 5.33 FIP. Patino was formerly with the Rays and was a big piece of the trade that sent Blake Snell to San Diego. The 24-year-old made one start in 2023 and has started 23 of the 45 games he has appeared in during his career. Overall, he's been a highly ineffective pitcher in the majors and there is no reason to roster him in most fantasy formats.
The Chicago White Sox have designated right-hander Luis Patino for assignment. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of right-hander Josimar Cousin from Double-A Birmingham. It's been a significant fall from grace for Patino, a former top prospect with the San Diego Padres. The highly-touted righty was moved to the Tampa Bay Rays as a headliner in the 2020 Blake Snell trade and while he tossed a decent 4.31 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) with the Rays in 2021, he was tattooed for an 8.10 ERA in 20 innings for the club in the 2022 campaign. The 24-year-old split the 2023 season between the White Sox and Rays, working to a 4.57 ERA in nine appearances (one start) but also posted a 5.33 FIP and a 5.36 SIERA while walking a hefty 14.1% of the batters he faced a season ago.

Patino, now 21, was rushed to the Majors by the Padres in 2020 due to his rare combination of stuff, athleticism, and makeup. A starter in the minors, he was used almost exclusively out of the bullpen in his debut. Patino struggled with both his command and his control in the unfamiliar role. The fact he didn't completely meltdown with a 16.5% walk rate, though, speaks to the quality of his stuff. Patino has a fastball that sits around 95-96 mph and backs it up with two secondary offerings with plus potential. During his debut, the slider was his one offering that was consistently down in the zone and it generated a Whiff rate of 48%. If he can command the offering a little more consistently and keep it down in the zone, then it will become more of a strikeout weapon for him. The most worrisome thing with Patino is his propensity for generating fly balls. It came back to bite him at the MLB level with a HR/FB rate of 12.5%. Because he's on the shorter side for a pitcher, he doesn't generate a natural downward plane on his offerings and he likes to work up in the zone so home runs could likely always be an issue for him. Patino was optioned to the Rays' minor-league camp back on March 16, which sent his already low ADP down to 545. He could still be an impact arm for Tampa Bay in 2021 but it won't happen in the beginning of the season. The Rays don't have a deep (or proven) starting rotation so he could get an extended look later on this year. Patino is also a must-have in dynasty leagues as he possesses a bright future despite the potential ongoing issues with the long-ball.
