Mets Listening on Mark Vientos as Trade Deadline Nears

The New York Mets have been discussing third baseman Mark Vientos in trade talks this week, and rival executives think that the team is willing to move him by this Thursday's July 31 deadline, league sources told SNY's Andy Martino. The Mets aren't looking to move any of their young infielders -- they've also received interest in Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio -- but rival executives think Vientos is more available than Baty and Mauricio. The 25-year-old hit 27 home runs with an .837 in a breakout 2024 campaign. He might not be as good this year, but interested teams view Vientos as a player that can carry a team when he gets hot. The former second-round has struggled on both offense and defense in 2025, but he's currently on a six-game hitting streak and could see more playing time with a change of scenery to finish this year.

Mark Vientos Absent on Sunday

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos is out of the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants. This is interesting after Bob Nightengale reported Vientos could be a possible trade candidate in a deal to acquire Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox. This could be a routine rest day or possibly the trade talk is heating up. It's worth noting that Robert is serving as the designated hitter against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Vientos has struggled with the bat this season, so maybe a change of scenery could help him. Ronny Mauricio will cover third base and bat ninth versus left-hander Matt Gage on Sunday.

White Sox Want Mark Vientos for Luis Robert Jr.

If the Chicago White Sox are going to trade outfielder Luis Robert Jr. to the New York Mets, they're going to want third baseman/designated hitter Mark Vientos in return, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Mets are known to have interest in Robert, who has struggled this year but is currently enjoying his best month of the season as the White Sox prepare to deal him. Robert has gone 13-for-37 with two homers, nine RBI, 10 runs scored, and four stolen bases in July. Acquiring the former All-Star would take care of the Mets' need for a righty-hitting outfielder. However, it's unclear whether they're willing to give up the 25-year-old Vientos to make it happen. Vientos burst on the scene with 27 home runs last season, but he has fallen short of expectations in 2025. Over 279 plate appearances, Vientos has hit .226/.280/.358 with six homers, 27 RBI, and 22 runs scored.

Mark Vientos Not Expected to be Traded

The Athetic's Tim Britton wouldn't be shocked if New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos were traded in the next week, but he also doesn't expect him to be traded, mainly because his right-handed bat can be a useful complement to Jeff McNeil and Brett Bay, who both hit left-handed, on the infield. Vientos' plate discipline has been similar to his breakout in 2024, but his quality of contact has been way down this season. The ball just hasn't been coming off his bat as expected, and it's been a concern since spring training. The Mets are putting more of an emphasis on Vientos finding more barrels, and they are hoping to see some improvement over the next two months. The 25-year-old former second-rounder is hitting just .224 (57-for-254) with six home runs and 25 RBI in 72 games. However, he's also had a hit in each of his last five games heading into this weekend.

Mark Vientos Officially Activated and Starting on Friday

As expected, New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) was officially activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting in Friday's series opener in Pittsburgh against the Pirates and right-hander Mitch Keller. Vientos will be eased in as the designated hitter and will bat sixth in the order, with Brett Baty at third base and hitting behind him in the seven-hole. The 25-year-old Vientos broke out for the Mets last year with 27 homers and 71 RBI in 111 regular-season games, but he was hitting just .230/.298/.380 with a below-average .678 OPS, six homers, 21 RBI and 49 strikeouts in 53 games before his hamstring injury. An xwOBA in the 19th percentile and a 32nd percentile chase rate doesn't bode well for his chances of a rebound, but the power is certainly there. Vientos might need to pick things up to fend off Baty as the regular third baseman in the second half of 2025.

Mark Vientos Says He'll Come Off Injured List on Friday

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) said he will come off the 10-day injured list to rejoin the big-league roster on Friday before the series opener in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. Vientos should return to regular playing time for the Mets when he's back between third base and designated hitter. The 25-year-old went 5-for-28 with six RBI and four runs scored in seven minor-league rehab games with Triple-A Syracuse and will return to a .230/.298/.380 slash line with six home runs, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored at the big-league level. Vientos was a breakout star for the Mets in 2024 with 27 home runs and 71 RBI in 111 regular-season games, but he hasn't looked like that same hitter so far in 2025 with a strikeout rate in the 40th percentile and a chase rate in the 32nd percentile. He can still provide pop and RBI in a strong lineup, but the average is going to remain low.

Mark Vientos Could Return From Injured List on Thursday

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) could be activated from the 10-day injured list on Thursday, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. The Mets will decide on whether to activate Vientos for the series finale against the division-rival Atlanta Braves on Thursday or give him an extra day off after playing in the minor leagues on Tuesday and Wednesday. If Vientos doesn't return on Thursday, he should be back for Friday's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 25-year-old has been out since early June with a strained right hamstring, but he's on the cusp of a return to the big leagues and should return to regular starting duties at the hot corner in Queens despite his slow start to the 2025 season. Vientos broke out in 2024 with a career-high 27 homers and 71 RBI, but so far he's hit just .230 (43-for-187) with six homers and 21 RBI in 53 games in 2025.

Mark Vientos to Continue Rehab Assignment Through Wednesday

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) is scheduled to play Tuesday and Wednesday on his minor-league rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. Barring a setback, the earliest Vientos will return to the Mets' big-league roster will be for this weekend's series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 25-year-old was hitting a disappointing .230 (43-for-187) with six home runs, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored before straining his right hamstring, and he's gone just 2-for-17 with a double through four rehab games with Syracuse. Although Ronny Mauricio hasn't exactly taken advantage of extra playing time at the hot corner in Queens with Vientos sidelined, the two could form a platoon at third for the Mets once Vientos returns if Vientos can't get going at the plate.

Mark Vientos Could Return Monday

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) will continue to rehab his injured right hamstring with Triple-A Syracuse this weekend, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. If he gets through Sunday unscathed, he could rejoin the Mets on Monday. The club has gone almost three weeks without Vientos, who landed on the 10-day IL on June 3 with a low-grade strain. Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio have manned the hot corner in Vientos' absence. However, both Baty and Mauricio have posted horrific production this month. Vientos looked like a breakout slugger during a 27-homer campaign a year ago, but he endured struggles of his own before going on the shelf. The 25-year-old has hit an uninspiring .230/.298/.380 with six HRs and 21 RBI in 208 plate appearances this season.

Mark Vientos to Begin Rehab Assignment Early Next Week

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse early next week, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Vientos landed on the 10-day injured list with a low-grade right hamstring strain on June 3, continuing a disappointing start to the season for the 25-year-old. After bursting on the scene last year with 27 home runs and 71 RBI, Vientos has batted a mediocre .230/.294/.380 with six HRs and 21 RBI in 208 plate appearances this season. Brett Baty has been the Mets' primary third baseman with Vientos out, while Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuna have also picked up starts. With Vientos likely to return in the next couple of weeks, the team could option either Mauricio or Acuna to Triple-A.
