Matthew Boyd on Track to Return Next Wednesday

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (biceps) threw 64 pitches in 3 2/3 innings in a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and reported feeling good on Friday, according to MLB.com. Boyd is on target to be activated from the 15-day injured list to start next Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran left-hander is recovering from a left-biceps strain that sent him to the IL on April 6. It's great news for a Cubs pitching staff that has been decimated by injuries early in the 2026 campaign. While it's good news for Chicago, fantasy managers who have Boyd rostered might want to keep him benched for a tough first matchup back against Philly. In his 3 2/3 innings on Thursday with Iowa, Boyd looked good, striking out six batters and walking one while throwing 64 total pitches. Boyd could be somewhat limited from a pitch-count perspective next week after he's reinstated, which is another reason to fade him as a fantasy play next week.

Matthew Boyd Strikes Out Six in Rehab Start on Thursday

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (biceps) looked good in his minor-league rehab start on Thursday with Triple-A Iowa, allowing three earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out six in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Boyd is on the 15-day injured list with a left-biceps strain, but the 35-year-old veteran is expected to only need one rehab outing before the Cubs have him rejoin the big-league starting rotation. If Boyd is done making rehab starts in the minors, his next outing for Chicago could come as soon as Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. That wouldn't be the greatest matchup for fantasy baseball purposes, especially with Boyd throwing only 3 2/3 frames on Thursday at Iowa. Boyd allowed seven earned runs in 9 1/3 innings in his first two starts of 2026 before going on the IL, but he also had a 1.87 FIP with 17 strikeouts and three walks. Fantasy managers should be stashing the crafty lefty veteran in most fantasy leagues, especially with his return not far off.

Matthew Boyd to Make Rehab Start Next Week

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (biceps) will make a minor-league rehab start next week, according to 670 The Score's Bruce Levine. It's unclear which affiliate Boyd will be making the start for, but regardless, it's a good sign that he'll be back in game action so soon after being placed on the 15-day injured list earlier this week with a left-biceps strain. The veteran left-hander is eligible to be activated from the IL for next weekend's series against the New York Mets, but that's unlikely to happen with his rehab coming at some point next week. However, if Boyd fares well during his rehab start in the minors next week, he should be able to rejoin Chicago's starting rotation before the end of April. The Cubs need all the help they can get in their rotation after they just lost right-hander Cade Horton (elbow) for the season. Perhaps Boyd's early-season struggles can be attributed to his biceps injury, as he has a 6.75 ERA over his first two starts. He also has 17 strikeouts and only three walks in his 9 1/3 innings.

Cubs Putting Matthew Boyd on 15-Day Injured List With Biceps Strain

The Chicago Cubs are placing left-hander Matthew Boyd (biceps) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a left-biceps strain, according to Taylor McGregor of Watch Marquee Sports. Right-hander Javier Assad will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa to make the start on Tuesday on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays. With Justin Steele (elbow), Cade Horton (forearm), and now Boyd on the IL, the Cubs are dangerously thin in their starting rotation early on in 2026. Going forward, both Assad and Colin Rea could be making starts for the Cubbies. An All-Star for the first time in his career in 2025 in his first year in Chicago, Boyd had gotten off to a rough start in 2026 in his first two outings before going on the IL, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out 17 in 9 1/3 innings pitched. The 35-year-old veteran allowed six runs in his season debut, but he bounced back nicely against the Angels with 10 K's in 5 2/3 innings.

Matthew Boyd Named the Cubs' Opening Day Starter

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd has been named as the team's Opening Day starter for the March 26 contest against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Boyd was a first-time All-Star last year on the North Side in his first year in Chicago, going 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA (3.65 FIP) and 1.09 WHIP with 154 strikeouts and 42 walks in 179 2/3 innings over 31 starts. His 154 strikeouts were the third-most in his career. This will be the veteran left-hander's third career Opening Day start after he started the first game of the regular season twice for the Detroit Tigers in 2020 and 2021. Boyd pitched in one game for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic in a relief role, allowing three runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings versus Mexico. He knows how to keep hitters off balance, but Boyd isn't a big strikeout guy, limiting his fantasy upside as more of a back-end rotation arm.

Matthew Boyd Could Be a Candidate to Regress in 2026

After signing in free agency on a modest two-year contract, Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd entered 2025 profiling as a quality depth arm but little more. The 35-year-old instead delivered a career season, posting a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 154 strikeouts across 179 2/3 innings pitched (31 starts). Still, a look under the hood at Boyd could reveal that he's a prime regression candidate in 2026. Across 68 innings after the All-Star break, Boyd posted a 4.63 ERA. Additionally, with a below-average 21.4% strikeout rate, Boyd is unlikely to provide significant help to fantasy managers in the strikeout category. The veteran lefty also remains a significant health risk, as 2025 was his first time throwing more than 78 2/3 innings in a season since 2019. Boyd has a spot in the Cubs' rotation, which gives him a chance to rack up wins as long as he can stay on the mound. However, fantasy managers may want to price in some regression back to career norms and health risk before targeting him in drafts.

Matthew Boyd Expected to Start Game 4 of NLDS Against Brewers

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd is expected to start Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Thursday at Wrigley Field against the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Boyd will be hoping to bounce back on Thursday and send the NLDS to a fifth and deciding game back in Milwaukee on Saturday. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was Chicago's most consistent starter all year long, but he allowed six runs (two earned) and recorded just two outs in the first inning in his disastrous Game 1 start last weekend. The good news is that Boyd has pitched much better at the friendly confines of Wrigley this year than on the road. Boyd didn't fare well against the Brew Crew in his two regular-season starts against them, either, giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits (two homers) while walking eight and striking out only five in 10 1/3 total innings.

Matthew Boyd Named Game 1 Starter for NLDS

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd has been named the Game 1 starter for Saturday's Game 1 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. The southpaw tossed 4.1 innings allowing only one run during Game 1 of the Wild Card round versus the San Diego Padres. Boyd looked strong during that outing, but only threw 58 pitches before giving up the ball to the bullpen. The expectation is that Boyd will likely have a similar workload during Saturday's game. The 34-year-old was fantastic in the first half of the season and earned his first All-Star appearance. Boyd struggled in the second half of the season, but the Cubs don't have a ton of viable starting options right now.

Matthew Boyd to Start Game 1 of Wild-Card Series Against Padres

The Chicago Cubs officially announced on Monday that left-hander Matthew Boyd will start in Game 1 of the Wild-Card series on Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres, according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. It's not a surprise after rookie right-hander Cade Horton (rib) was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a rib injury. Left-hander Shota Imanaga has struggled down the stretch, but he's likely to get the nod for Wednesday's Game 2. The 34-year-old Boyd was the anchor of Chicago's pitching staff in 2025, going 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 154 strikeouts and 42 walks in 179 2/3 innings over 31 starts as a first-time All-Star. Both of Boyd's outings against San Diego came way back in April, when he gave up only two runs on 11 hits with eight K's and three walks in 11 1/3 innings. However, the Padres as a team had the sixth-best OPS (.801) against lefty pitchers during the regular season.

Matthew Boyd Takes Tough Loss on Thursday

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was excellent on the mound throughout most of Thursday's outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. Boyd had a shutout going into the seventh inning until Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blasted a two-run home run off him. The Cubs couldn't put up much offense during this game, so sadly Boyd will take the loss. He threw seven innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out five batters. His next time on the mound will be an important divisional game against the Milwaukee Brewers next week.
