Matthew Boyd Expected to Start Game 4 of NLDS Against Brewers

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd is expected to start Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Thursday at Wrigley Field against the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Boyd will be hoping to bounce back on Thursday and send the NLDS to a fifth and deciding game back in Milwaukee on Saturday. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was Chicago's most consistent starter all year long, but he allowed six runs (two earned) and recorded just two outs in the first inning in his disastrous Game 1 start last weekend. The good news is that Boyd has pitched much better at the friendly confines of Wrigley this year than on the road. Boyd didn't fare well against the Brew Crew in his two regular-season starts against them, either, giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits (two homers) while walking eight and striking out only five in 10 1/3 total innings.

Matthew Boyd Named Game 1 Starter for NLDS

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd has been named the Game 1 starter for Saturday's Game 1 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. The southpaw tossed 4.1 innings allowing only one run during Game 1 of the Wild Card round versus the San Diego Padres. Boyd looked strong during that outing, but only threw 58 pitches before giving up the ball to the bullpen. The expectation is that Boyd will likely have a similar workload during Saturday's game. The 34-year-old was fantastic in the first half of the season and earned his first All-Star appearance. Boyd struggled in the second half of the season, but the Cubs don't have a ton of viable starting options right now.

Matthew Boyd to Start Game 1 of Wild-Card Series Against Padres

The Chicago Cubs officially announced on Monday that left-hander Matthew Boyd will start in Game 1 of the Wild-Card series on Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres, according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. It's not a surprise after rookie right-hander Cade Horton (rib) was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a rib injury. Left-hander Shota Imanaga has struggled down the stretch, but he's likely to get the nod for Wednesday's Game 2. The 34-year-old Boyd was the anchor of Chicago's pitching staff in 2025, going 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 154 strikeouts and 42 walks in 179 2/3 innings over 31 starts as a first-time All-Star. Both of Boyd's outings against San Diego came way back in April, when he gave up only two runs on 11 hits with eight K's and three walks in 11 1/3 innings. However, the Padres as a team had the sixth-best OPS (.801) against lefty pitchers during the regular season.

Matthew Boyd Takes Tough Loss on Thursday

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was excellent on the mound throughout most of Thursday's outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. Boyd had a shutout going into the seventh inning until Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blasted a two-run home run off him. The Cubs couldn't put up much offense during this game, so sadly Boyd will take the loss. He threw seven innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out five batters. His next time on the mound will be an important divisional game against the Milwaukee Brewers next week.

Matthew Boyd Throws Seven Shutout Innings

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was outstanding on the mound during Saturday's outing against the Baltimore Orioles. The O's hitters had no answers for Boyd as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits, and striking out eight batters in the no-decision. Sadly for Boyd, the Cubs bullpen blew the game in the eighth inning. Boyd has allowed zero earned runs in four of his last five starts. He'll take a 2.34 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 118/29 K/BB ratio into his next outing against the St. Louis Cardinals. Boyd should be rostered and started in all fantasy formats right now.

Matthew Boyd Won't Pitch in All-Star Game

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd, who has already thrown 111 2/3 innings this season, will not pitch in the All-Star game for the National League on Tuesday. Boyd's 111 2/3 frames have already surpassed his total in each of the previous five years, and given his medical history, it makes sense for the Cubs to err on the side of caution heading into the second half. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has gone 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA and closed out his excellent first half by throwing eight shutout innings against the New York Yankees in the Bronx on Saturday. Fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting Boyd to be better in the second half, and the Cubs could look for spots to get him extra rest if they can. With a 3.30 xERA and whiff rate in just the 29th percentile, he's outperforming his underlying stats a bit. Still, he's limiting hard contact and continues to keep hitters off balance.

Matthew Boyd Dominates Yankees on Saturday

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd ended the first half of his season on a high note in a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday. Boyd improved to 10-3 with a season-high eight innings of scoreless, four-hit ball, notching six strikeouts and no walks. He threw 85 pitches, 62 for strikes, and will head into the All-Star break having allowed two or fewer earned runs in nine consecutive starts. The first-time All-Star, 34, has tallied 13 quality starts and logged an ace-like 2.34 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP, 102 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 111 2/3 frames.

Matthew Boyd Strikes Out Nine in Win on Sunday

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd turned in an excellent start in his team's 11-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Boyd threw five shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking one, and striking out nine on the way to earning his ninth win of the season. The veteran southpaw notched 14 swinging strikes in the outing while improving his record to 9-3, to go along with a 2.52 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings of work on the season. Boyd remains a rock-solid fantasy starting pitcher going forward as he prepares to take on the New York Yankees in his next start, which is set for Saturday.

Matthew Boyd Shines in Eighth Victory

Chicago Cubs starter Matthew Boyd picked up his eighth win of the season in his team's 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Boyd went seven innings, allowing five hits, one walk, and two earned runs with five strikeouts. The veteran lefty has emerged as an integral piece of the division-leading Cubs' rotation. He's posted a 2.65 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 87 strikeouts in 98 2/3 innings pitched. There are some signs of regression in his profile, as Boyd has stranded an unusually high 80.4% of baserunners, and his 8.4% home run-to-fly-ball rate is well below his career norms. Even if Boyd pitches closer to his 3.44 xERA the rest of the way, he'll still be a useful fantasy starter with solid win potential every time he takes the mound for the Cubs.

Matthew Boyd "All Good" for his Next Start

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (shoulder) is "all good" to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals after coming out of his last start with a bruised left shoulder, according to manager Craig Counsell. Boyd didn't have any issues during his between-starts bullpen session. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was hit by a comebacker in his last start against the Seattle Mariners last Friday and allowed two earned runs while walking two and striking out six in five innings in a no-decision. Boyd has been a key rotation piece for the Cubbies so far in 2025 with a 6-3 record, 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:21 K:BB in 85 2/3 frames over his 15 starts. However, a 3.55 xERA and 3.65 FIP point to regression coming for the aging lefty that is only striking out 8.3 hitters per nine innings.
