Matthew Boyd Sent On Rehab Assignment

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) was sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Boyd was signed by Cleveland in June and is on the 15-day injured list as he recovers from Tommy John surgery that he had in June of last year. It's good news that the veteran 33-year-old southpaw is now embarking on a rehab assignment, but he's still probably a month away from being an option for the big-league roster. It's unclear what role the Guardians envision for Boyd when he's healthy, but 160 of his 174 appearances in the big leagues over the last nine seasons have come in a starting role. He went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 73 strikeouts and 25 walks in 15 starts for the Tigers in 2023 before having Tommy John surgery. Boyd is unlikely to be much of a fantasy option in mixed leagues the rest of the way in 2024.

Matthew Boyd Agrees With Guardians

Free-agent left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) agreed to an undisclosed major-league deal with the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, according to a source. The deal is pending a physical. Boyd had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last June and won't immediately join the Guardians' big-league roster, and it's unclear how long it will before he could be pitching in games for Cleveland. At the very least, he'll give the Guardians some veteran pitching depth. Boyd has nine seasons of major-league experience after originally being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Oregon State. In 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers last year before getting injured, he went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB in 71 innings. Fantasy managers, even in the deepest of leagues, shouldn't expect much from Boyd the rest of the 2024 season.

Matthew Boyd To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. That is not good news after Boyd exited early during Monday's start against the Texas Rangers due to elbow discomfort. Now, it appears the left-hander is set to miss the rest of the season due to a partial sprain of his left UCL. Boyd is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. The Tigers rotation takes another hit with Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) already sidelined. Luckily, right-hander Matt Manning (foot) is set to return on Tuesday, so his return will soften the blow of Boyd. The expectation is that Boyd won't be able to pitch again until mid-season of 2024.

Matthew Boyd Leaves Early With Elbow Discomfort

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) left his start early on Monday against the Texas Rangers with left-elbow discomfort. Boyd only made it two-thirds of an inning in the first and allowed a run on a solo home run while striking out two. Fantasy managers will want to check back for updates on his status after the Tigers get the results of tests back either Monday night or Tuesday morning. The good news for Detroit is that if Boyd requires an injured-list stint, they have Matt Manning (foot) returning to the rotation on Tuesday and lefties Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) not far behind him. Boyd entered his start on Monday with a 5.37 ERA (4.25 FIP), 1.32 WHIP, 25 walks and 71 K's in 70 1/3 innings over his 14 starts.

Matthew Boyd Leaves Start After 15 Pitches

Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd left his start against the Texas Rangers on Monday with an apparent injury. Boyd threw just 15 pitches before departing, getting two outs via strikeouts and allowing one run on one hit. Following his 15th pitch, Boyd was visited on the mound by manager A.J. Hinch and the Tigers' head trainer. He was replaced on the mound by Will Vest. Stay tuned as the Tigers are likely to update Boyd's status following Monday's game.

Fantasy Baseball Injury Reports for Hitters - Updates for Yordan Alvarez, Jose Siri, Michael Harris, Amed Rosario, Michael Conforto

The 2023 MLB season is underway and as always, injuries are beginning to pile up. Today we'll look at injured hitters including Yordan Alvarez, Michael Harris II, Amed Rosario, Jose Siri and Josh Donaldson. Baseball season is a marathon and not a race, so finding replacements for players out of action is key for fantasy baseball success. For those not yet familiar, this is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for hitters as of April 19, 2023. We'll be covering all positions throughout the week, so stay tuned. Some players on this list impact fantasy baseball more than others, but with leagues of all shapes and sizes, you never know which guys will force fantasy managers to search waiver wires in hopes of finding adequate replacements. To keep close tabs on all of the news across the MLB, make sure to favorite or bookmark the fantasy baseball player news page, and download the free RotoBaller fantasy baseball mobile app with push notification alerts on all the latest news. Let's look at the injury updates for hitters.   Yordan Alvarez Injury Update Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (ankle) looked to turn his left ankle a bit on a swing on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays and was pulled from the contest early in the eighth inning. Alvarez started the game in left field and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk in the contest before departing with his injury. It's unknown exactly how serious his ankle injury is, but for now, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day until we know more. https://twitter.com/brianmctaggart/status/1648515063500918785 The 25-year-old Cuban slugger came into Tuesday's game hitting .273 (15-for-55) with three doubles, four home runs, a league-leading 20 RBI and 11 runs scored in 15 games. Hopefully for fantasy managers, Alvarez can return soon and avoid a trip to the injured list.   Michael Harris II Injury Update Atlanta Braves outfielder Michael Harris II (back) said last Saturday that he'd probably begin taking batting practice in the coming days, but it doesn't appear that he's been cleared for that step yet as he rehabs a back injury. "Same place he's been," manager Brian Snitker said. "Just rehabbing. It's not there yet." https://twitter.com/SportsTalkATL/status/1647623611593760769 The 22-year-old second-year player landed on the injured list in early April with a lower back strain and still isn't quite ready to return for the Braves. As soon as he's able to take batting practice, a minor-league rehab assignment shouldn't be far off. Fantasy managers should continue to stash last year's National League Rookie of the Year. Until he returns, Sam Hilliard should continue to see more playing time in the outfield.   Amed Rosario Injury Update Cleveland Guardians shortstop Amed Rosario (back) went back to Cleveland on Monday to get an MRI exam on his back, which came back fine. However, the team is hoping he'll be ready to return to the lineup on Friday, and he remains out of the starting lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Tyler Freeman is with the club in the meantime and is starting at the 6 and hitting eighth in Game 1 against Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd on Tuesday. https://twitter.com/ZackMeisel/status/1648350813624958977 Rosario hasn't played since last Saturday and has gone 14-for-63 (.222) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI, three stolen bases and seven runs scored in his first 14 games of the season. Fantasy managers should plan to have him back by this weekend.   Jose Siri Injury Update Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jose Siri (hamstring) has made significant progress in his return to action, as he ran full speed on Monday. However, he still has to do some baserunning drills and get some at-bats on a rehab stint, so according to Marc Topkin, the 27-year-old is still a bit away from coming off the injured list. He'll likely play rehab games in AAA this weekend, and could join the team next week against the Astros: https://twitter.com/TBTimes_Rays/status/1648713615678099456 Before getting hurt, Siri was on a tear, slashing .318/.333/.682 with two homers, five runs, eight RBI, and one steal across six games. When he's back with the Rays, the speedster will try to continue to break out in his third season at the big league level.   Jesse Winker Injury Update Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jesse Winker (oblique) is not in the lineup for his team's Monday matchup against the Seattle Mariners. Winker was a late scratch on Sunday and was not quite ready to return to action on Monday, although he is reportedly close. https://twitter.com/A_Jude/status/1648111089165676544 He was able to work out on-field before the game and is potentially available as a pinch-hitter according to manager Craig Counsell. Winker has a strong shot at being in the lineup for Tuesday.   Michael Conforto Injury Update San Francisco Giants outfielder Michael Conforto (calf) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. The organization was hopeful that Conforto would return here. Sadly, he'll miss his fourth game in a row due to left calf tightness. https://twitter.com/sfchronicle/status/1648462459483848704 The Giants haven't placed Conforto on the injured list yet, so hopefully it's still only a minor issue. The left-handed slugger was able to pinch-hit over the weekend, so he must be doing a little better. Hopefully, he'll be back in the lineup within the next few days.   Josh Donaldson Injury Update New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that third baseman Josh Donaldson (hamstring) will be the team's starting third baseman when he returns from the injured list, possibly as soon as this Wednesday. However, Boone also said he will ease Donaldson back into the lineup after two weeks off, and he could cycle through the designated hitter spot with Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) now on the IL. https://twitter.com/BryanHoch/status/1648509023648636933 As of right now, DJ LeMahieu is the starter at the hot corner, but Donaldson remains a high-level defender at the position. But if Donaldson continues to struggle at the plate, the Yankees could consider cutting him despite still owing him $27 million. The Yankees will give Donaldson time to turn things around, but they could get impatient if he continues to struggle.

Matthew Boyd To Start Monday Against Astros

Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd is lined up to start the team's fourth game of the season on Monday on the road against the Houston Astros. Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull and Joey Wentz will start the first three games of the season in the opening series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Manning will go on Tuesday against Houston. Boyd, a 32-year-old southpaw, made his return late last season after having flexor-tendon surgery on his left arm and was pretty impressive with the Seattle Mariners in a relief role. He'll be used as a starter in 2023, though, and likely workload restrictions are what will mostly keep his fantasy appeal limited.

Matthew Boyd Agrees With Tigers

The Detroit Tigers and left-hander Matthew Boyd agreed to a deal on Thursday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting that the deal is for $10 million-plus. The 31-year-old southpaw spent seven seasons with the Tigers from 2015 to 2021 and returns to a team looking to overhaul its pitching staff under new president Scott Harris. Boyd signed with the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and was traded to the Seattle Mariners in early August. He made just 10 relief appearances (13 1/3 innings) but was great with a 1.35 ERA, 13 strikeouts and eight walks for the M's. Boyd didn't make his season debut until September due to injury, but when healthy, he could be an effective swing man for Detroit's pitching staff.

Matthew Boyd Reinstated From Injured List

The Seattle Mariners reinstated relief pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Thursday and recalled outfielder Taylor Trammell from Triple-A Tacoma with rosters expanding. Boyd will work exclusively in relief for the Mariners as he makes his 2022 debut in the big leagues. The 31-year-old left-hander had flexor tendon surgery last September and has been working his way back to the majors ever since. The good news is he fanned 14 in eight innings on his minor league rehab assignment, so he appears to be fully healthy and ready to go. Boyd will be a nice real-life piece of the bullpen with plenty of experience, but he's not really on the fantasy radar to close out the season.

Matthew Boyd To Join Mariners In Detroit

Seattle Mariners left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) will reportedly be activated at some point for the team's upcoming series against the Detroit Tigers, according to The Detroit News' Chris McCosky. McCosky notes in his tweet that the left-hander will pitch out of the bullpen for the Mariners. A starter for most of his career in the Majors, the left-hander previously made 15 starts for Detroit last season. In those 15 starts, he turned in a 3.89 ERA, a 4.10 FIP, 67 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 78.2 innings for the Tigers.
