Matt Shaw Playing on Friday

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw is in the starting lineup ahead of Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Shaw sat out the final three games ahead of the All-Star break, but will get another chance on Friday. The rookie slugger has been awful this season, going 1-for-27 at the plate during the month of July. The expectation is that the Cubs are going to add a third baseman at the trade deadline. It honestly might be too late for Shaw to save his everyday job, but a hot start to the second half could help him. Shaw isn't someone that needs to be rostered in most fantasy formats right now. He figures to lose playing time in the second half of the season.

Matt Shaw in Danger of Losing Playing Time in Second Half

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw is in danger of losing playing time during the second half. Shaw was able to break camp with the MLB roster but struggled during his first look. Through his first 18 games, the former first-round pick posted a .172/.294/.241 slash line with just one long ball and a double. He was then optioned to Triple-A Iowa, where he began to find his swing and made a quick return to Chicago. During his first 20 games in his second stint, the former top prospect appeared to be rounding into form, posting a strong .311/.346/.446 line with seven doubles and a round-tripper. However, over his 25 games since, Shaw has posted a low .107 AVG with a .344 OPS. In addition, Shaw has begun to lose playing time to Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan. With the Cubs already linked to several of the top third basemen on the trade market, Shaw could find himself back at Iowa for most of the second half. He is only worth holding on your bench in deeper 12+ team leagues for now.

Matt Shaw Out of Starting Lineup for Third Consecutive Day

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw is absent from the starting lineup for his team's Sunday afternoon game against the New York Yankees. Shaw has now been on the bench for four out of the Cubs' last five games and three straight, so this could be a more permanent role change for the struggling youngster. Utility man Vidal Brujan is playing third and batting ninth today, while veteran Jon Berti got the start at the hot corner on both Friday and Saturday. The 23-year-old Shaw won the Cubs' third base job out of Spring Training, but he's hit .199 with two home runs, 15 RBI, 28 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases. With the trade deadline nearing and the Cubs reportedly searching for upgrades, Shaw could soon be looking at a demotion to Triple-A.

Cubs Could Look for 3B Help With Matt Shaw Struggling

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian suggests that the Chicago Cubs could look for help at third base at this year's trade deadline with rookie Matt Shaw continuing to struggle. The Cubs gave the slumping Shaw a day off for Wednesday's series finale against the Minnesota Twins, as the 23-year-old former first-rounder is now hitting just .200 (41-for-205) with two homers, 15 RBI, 28 runs, 11 stolen bases and 45 strikeouts in 61 games in his first year in the majors. Names like Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez and Pirates 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes could be available later this month. The Cubs still believe that Shaw can be the long-term answer at third, but they may be inclined to add another third base bat if they think it will improve their chances of winning the rest of this season. Shaw's average exit velocity (83.2 mph) and hard-hit rate (26.9%) are ranked near the bottom of all MLB hitters.

Matt Shaw Tallies Three Hits, Swipes Two Bags on Thursday

Chicago Cubs third base prospect Matt Shaw went 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases during their victory over the Nationals on Thursday. Over his last 11 games, the Maryland product has begun to heat up at the major league level. During this stretch, Shaw has posted a stellar .333/.381/.410 slash line with three doubles and five stolen bases. During his first stint in the majors, Shaw posted a modest .172/.294/.241 slash line across 18 games. However, after a brief stint in Triple-A, Shaw has begun to turn the corner in the big leagues. Given his five-category upside, fantasy managers should view Shaw as a strong corner infielder in all standard formats. Shaw will look to stay hot at the plate on Friday, facing Detroit ace Tarik Skubal.

Matt Shaw Steals Two Bases on Tuesday

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw turned in a productive night in his team's 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in 11 innings on Tuesday. Shaw went 2-for-5 with two walks, a run, an RBI, and two steals in the extra-innings win. The rookie infielder continued his early trend of showing a good eye and providing speed on the basepaths as he now has 13 walks and four steals across 89 at-bats this season. Shaw is one of Chicago's top prospects and has the potential to be an impact bat in the majors, making him an interesting corner infielder in deeper fantasy leagues.

Matt Shaw Hitting Ninth in Return to Big Leagues

In his first game back in the big leagues with the Chicago Cubs in Monday's series opener against the hosting Miami Marlins and right-hander Edward Cabrera, third base prospect Matt Shaw is at the hot corner and batting ninth. The Cubs' top-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, struggled in his first taste of the big leagues earlier this season, going 10-for-58 (.172) with a homer, three RBI, 10 walks and 18 strikeouts in 18 games played. It prompted the Cubs to send the 23-year-old back to the minors, where Shaw responded by slashing .286/.409/.560 with six home runs and five stolen bases in 24 games at Triple-A Iowa. While the nine-hole isn't exactly where fantasy managers want to see Shaw, he will have the opportunity to move up the lineup if he shows improvement in his return to the big leagues. He's worth a waiver-wire pickup everywhere for his five-category upside.

Matt Shaw Returning to Chicago

Chicago Cubs infield prospect Matt Shaw is set to rejoin the MLB roster prior to their contest against the Miami Marlins on Monday evening. Jon Heyman of the New York Post noted that the Cubs may look for a trade partner for infielder Nicky Lopez, as he is not traveling with the team to Miami. Shaw was able to make the Opening Day roster but was shortly optioned back to Triple-A after he posted a modest .172/.294/.241 slash line with just one long ball across his first 18 games. However, since returning to Triple-A Iowa, Shaw has been very productive. Through 24 games, the Maryland product has posted a stellar .284/.409/.560 slash line with five doubles, six home runs, five stolen bases, and an 11:17 K:BB. Fantasy managers should expect him to have an everyday role at the hot corner with Jon Berti serving as the No. 2 option. Given his five-category upside, he should be started in all 12+ team formats.

Matt Shaw Goes Deep Twice on Friday

Chicago Cubs infield prospect Matt Shaw went 3-for-5 with two home runs during their contest against Triple-A St. Paul on Friday evening. This was Shaw's second time hitting at least two home runs over his last three contests. Over his last eight contests, the former 13th overall pick has been swinging a hot bat, posting a strong .400/.486/.1.033 slash line with two doubles, one triple, and five home runs. During this stretch, Shaw has swiped three bags and held a 3:4 K:BB. The Maryland product was able to crack the Opening Day roster but was eventually optioned to Triple-A following his slow start. However, fantasy managers should expect Shaw to be in the mix to return to Chicago quite early in the season, given his strong play. Shaw carries five-category upside and is worth stashing in all standard formats.

Matt Shaw Busy On Friday

Chicago Cubs third base prospect Matt Shaw went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI, and a stolen base during Friday's contest. The 23-year-old was able to crack the Opening Day roster but was optioned back to Triple-A after his slow start. During his first 18 games in the majors, Shaw held a modest .172/.294/.241 slash line with just one double and a long ball. However, since his return to Triple-A Iowa, Shaw has posted a strong .262/.392/.415 slash line with five doubles, one triple, one long ball, and three stolen bases. Last summer at Triple-A, the Maryland product posted a stellar .298/.395/.534 slash line with eight doubles and seven long balls. Given his recent stretch at Triple-A, fantasy managers should expect the top prospect to return to the big leagues in the coming weeks.
