Matt Shaw Powers USA To Victory Over The Netherlands

Chicago Cubs second base prospect Matt Shaw went 4-for-5 with seven RBI to power the United States to a victory over the Netherlands in the WBSC Premier12. Shaw did it all as he tallied an RBI single in the third frame, a three-run double in the seventh, and a three-run shot in the eighth inning. Last summer, Shaw opened the campaign by getting his first extended look at Double-A ball and eventually earned a taste of Triple-A later in the summer. Through his first 35 games with Triple-A Iowa, the former 13th-overall selection posted a stellar .298/.395/.534 line with eight doubles, seven home runs, 21 RBI, and six stolen bases. Given his incredible progression, Shaw could have a strong chance to make the Opening Day Roster. For now, the top prospect in the North Side remains a high-end prospect to stash in all keeper formats.

Matt Shaw Dealing With Strained Back

Chicago Cubs shortstop prospect Matt Shaw (back), the team's top prospect per MLB Pipeline, reportedly strained his back making an impressive play to record the final out in the bottom of the second inning for Triple-A Iowa on Sunday when he ranged deep into the hole at the 6 to make a leaping throw to first base. Shaw was replaced with a pinch-hitter in the top of the third frame. He could end up missing a few days because of the injury. Shaw, the 13th overall pick last year out of Maryland, has slashed .254/.389/.441 with three long balls and nine RBI in 18 games for Iowa since his promotion. The 22-year-old is a pretty complete hitter who uses the entire field. He has picked it up offensively after a sluggish start early in 2024 and is now slashing a combined .275/.376/.464 with an .839 OPS, 17 homers, 59 RBI and 28 steals in 104 games at Iowa and Double-A Tennessee.

Matt Shaw Hasn't Missed A Beat In Triple-A

Chicago Cubs infield prospect Matt Shaw has now played 12 games for Triple-A Iowa and has adjusted well to his new home. The Cubs No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline was the team's first-round pick in 2023 and has rapidly ascended through the system. Shaw opened the season with Double-A Tennessee, but received his promotion to Iowa with teammates Kevin Alcantara and James Triantos two weeks ago. Since that time, Shaw has hit .263 with two homers, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 38 at-bats. Between Tennessee and Iowa, Shaw has hit .277 with 16 homers, 57 RBI and 27 stolen bases. It might be too aggressive to promote Shaw to the big-league roster this season, but he should be looking at an opportunity at making his mark in the big leagues by 2025. With his versatility and ability to hit the ball to all fields, Shaw looks to be worth the investment in dynasty leagues.

Matt Shaw Earns Promotion To Triple-A

The Chicago Cubs are set to promote third base prospect Matt Shaw to Triple-A Iowa. Shaw was the Cubs first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft and has quickly risen through the team's system. Shaw, 22, has spent this season in Double-A Tennessee, where he hit .279 with 14 homers, 50 RBI and 25 stolen bases to go along with an .841 OPS. The promotion should not come as a surprise with Shaw performing all season long and hitting .417 with three homers over his last 10 games. Shaw is the No. 29 prospect per MLB Pipeline and he could see his name called this summer with the Cubs offense struggling. Shaw's consistency and ability to play around the infield make him a strong option in dynasty leagues and an intriguing stash in redraft leagues.

Matt Shaw Launches Four Homers In Big Week

The Chicago Cubs selected second baseman Matt Shaw with the 13th pick in the first round of last summer's draft. The talented infielder has an advanced approach and high baseball IQ at the plate, showcasing a rare blend of both aggressiveness and discipline. He produces hard contact, hits to all parts of the field, and has even exceeded power expectations so far this year. He also draws walks at a decent clip and has kept his strikeout rate in a reasonable range. Defensively, he has a reliable glove, so while not super rangy, he should stick at second or third base long-term. Shaw put on a show last week, hitting 9-for-21 with four homers, nine RBI, five walks, and five strikeouts. He also stole a base. His best performance during that stretch came on Sunday as he slugged two homers in one game. The 22-year-old has played pro baseball for less than one year, but he's already pushing for a promotion to Triple-A.
