Max Scherzer Doesn't Plan on Retiring

Although nothing is 100% decided, Toronto Blue Jays veteran right-hander Max Scherzer said he currently has no plans to retire this offseason, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. "The only thing I can say is it's going to take some time to give a full answer to that, but there is no way that was my last pitch," Scherzer said after Toronto lost Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday night to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 41-year-old three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer put the Blue Jays in a good position for the win in Game 7, allowing only an earned run with a walk and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision. In his three playoff starts, Scherzer gave up six earned runs on 12 hits (three homers) while walking six and fanning 11 in 14 1/3 innings. The veteran bulldog is a pretty big injury risk in fantasy -- he made only 17 regular-season starts in 2025 -- and had an ERA above 5.00 for the first time in his career.

Max Scherzer Lined Up for Potential Game 7 of World Series

If necessary, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer will take the ball to start Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Rogers Centre on Saturday, according to Rob Longley of the Toronto Star. A deciding Game 7 would be necessary if the Blue Jays cannot close things out on Friday night in Game 6. Scherzer, 41, took a no-decision in his first start of the Fall Classic on Monday night in Los Angeles, allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched while giving up two home runs, walking only one, and striking out three. The veteran hurler has only made two starts in the postseason this year for Toronto, with his other outing coming in the American League Championship Series, when he gave up two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for a win over the Mariners. Scherzer had an ERA over 5.00 during the regular season and made only 17 starts due to injuries, but he's the type of veteran bulldog pitcher that would love nothing more than to take the ball in a deciding Game 7 of the Fall Classic.

Max Scherzer Named Game 3 Starter

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer has been tasked with taking the ball for Game 3 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Scherzer will look to keep the good times rolling after tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out five batters during Game 4 of the ALDS. That was his only work of the postseason, but Scherzer has plenty of experience, including two World Series championships. He'll be looking to help give his team a 2-1 lead in this series. The organization also announced that Shane Bieber would take the ball for Game 4.

Blue Jays Turn to Max Scherzer for Game 4 of ALCS

Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced that veteran right-hander Max Scherzer will start Game 4 of the ALCS on Thursday. The 41-year-old did not pitch in the ALDS against the Yankees, but with Toronto struggling to contain Seattle's offense, the club will turn to the seasoned ace in hopes of swinging the series back in their favor. Scherzer, a two-time World Series champion, owns a 3.78 career postseason ERA across 30 appearances. Despite battling inconsistency and posting a 5.19 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 17 starts in 2025, the Blue Jays hope playoff intensity will help him recapture his dominant form.

Max Scherzer Added to ALCS Roster

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer has been added to the roster ahead of the upcoming ALCS versus the Seattle Mariners. Scherzer was left off the ALDS roster, but figures to be needed for this upcoming best of seven series. The 41-year-old posted a 5.19 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 83/23 K/BB ratio across 17 starts in the regular season. Clearly his best days are behind him, but Scherzer can still be an asset to this roster. It's unclear if he'll be a traditional starter or be used in the bullpen. His postseason experience and presence is a good thing to have on this roster.

Max Scherzer Left Off Blue Jays ALDS Roster

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer has been left off the team's roster for its American League Division Series matchup against the New York Yankees. The 41-year-old struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout 2025, posting a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts across 85 innings (17 starts). Still, it's a bit of a surprise that Scherzer was left off the roster entirely. His absence could indicate that Blue Jays rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage will get the ball in Game 3, and Toronto may be lining up for a bullpen game in a potential Game 4. Yesavage made three starts in the big leagues this season, allowing five earned runs and walking seven while recording 16 strikeouts across 14 innings pitched.

Blue Jays Confident Max Scherzer Will Make Saturday Start Despite Back Tightness

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer (back) is reportedly improving each day and remains on track to start Saturday against the New York Yankees. The 41-year-old tossed 67 pitches across four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers last Sunday before exiting with back tightness, but he has maintained his regular between-start routine and expects the injury to be minor. Scherzer owns a 4.11 ERA across 13 starts in his first season with Toronto after signing a one-year, $15.5 million deal. The Blue Jays hope he can deliver meaningful innings down the stretch in October.

Max Scherzer Exits Due to Back Tightness

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer (back) was forced to make an early exit from Sunday's outing against the Milwaukee Brewers. Scherzer was pulled after four innings due to upper back tightness, according to manager John Schneider. Before exiting, Scherzer tossed four innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out one batter. This is now back-to-back starts that Scherzer has allowed four runs. Before that, Scherzer was pitching extremely well over his previous four outings. Possibly, Scherzer has been trying to pitch through the back issue. It's unclear at the moment if Scherzer will require a trip to the injured list. For now, Scherzer is day-to-day and expected to make his next start against the New York Yankees.

Max Scherzer Excellent on Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer was outstanding on the mound during Thursday's outing against the Chicago Cubs. Scherzer threw five shutout innings before allowing a solo home run off the bat of Michael Busch. Despite that, Scherzer still worked deep into this game and helped his team get the win. He tossed seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out three batters. Scherzer gave up a leadoff double to begin the eighth, so the Blue Jays decided to change pitchers despite him only being at 78 pitches. His next start will come in a favorable matchup against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Max Scherzer Battles Inflammation Through Abbreviated Start

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer (thumb) allowed just two earned runs on five hits and three walks over four innings in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Los Angeles Angels. He did not factor into the decision. However, Saturday's start came with a caveat. The eight-time All-Star admitted he was dealing with "a lot of inflammation" in his thumb during the outing. Scherzer, who owns a 4.76 ERA and 23.5% strikeout rate, is yet to factor into a decision through four starts this season. While the 40-year-old has flashed glimpses of his former dominance, his .274 batting average against and career-worst 89.8 mph average exit velocity are concerning signs heading into the second half. The three-time Cy Young winner is in the twilight of his career and should only be rostered in deeper format, 14-team leagues or larger. Scherzer will look to shake off the thumb issue and is tentatively scheduled to start Friday against the Athletics.
