Miguel Sanó News
The Los Angeles Angels placed corner infielder Miguel Sano (knee) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 28) on Wednesday and selected the contract of outfielder Willie Calhoun from the minors in a corresponding move. Right-hander Zac Kristofak was also designated for assignment. Sano hasn't played since last Friday due to left-knee inflammation and will now miss more time. The 30-year-old former Twin has gotten off to a decent start with a .262 average (16-for-61) in his first year with the Halos, but his signature power has yet to show up. Sano has gone deep just once and has driven in only five runs before injuring his knee. Until Sano returns, Luis Rengifo should play daily for the Angels at either third base or second base.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Miguel Sano (knee) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-handed slugger is still dealing with a lingering knee issue that forced him to exit early last Wednesday. He was able to return to the lineup later in the week but sat out on both Saturday and Sunday. The hope is that Sano will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list. Ehire Adrianza will cover third base during Monday's game.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Miguel Sano (knee) is still banged up after being pulled from Wednesday's game due to left knee soreness. The right-handed slugger was able to play on Friday but then sat out on Saturday. Sano had an MRI on his knee, which revealed inflammation in his left knee. The organization is currently considering Sano as day-to-day right now. Luis Rengifo figures to see additional playing time until Sano is ready again.

While the power was still evident for Miguel Sano last year, there was nothing else encouraging about his 2020 performance. Even the OBP appeal was lost, as he fashioned a miserable .278 number. Sano led the Majors with an incredibly outrageous 43.9% strikeout rate, which was a new low even for him. Dealing with some COVID-19 issues certainly did not help, as Sano had just one hit in his first 17 at-bats. He also finished with a whimper, hitting .148 in September/October. His O-Contact% fell to 36.5 from 42.8. When Sano did make contact, though, the results were still impressive, as he continued to rank among the very best in the league in Exit Velocity (95.2) and Hard Hit Rate (57.3). He also still ranked among the best in Barrel% (22.9) and xWOBACON (,532). Like Ivan Drago, anything he hit, he destroyed, The issue was obviously that he simply did not hit enough, as an increase in Launch Angle from 15.9 to a career-high 20.2 yielded continued explosive results with much less frequency. Sano's ADP of 188 makes sense, as you will get very good power and hopefully less of a pure basement type of BA this season, but with his propensity to not make contact so often, you simply have to pay the BA cost for the pop. If the walk rate (8.8) returns to prior levels he can bounce back from the OBP perspective.
