Omar Narvaez Exercises His 2024 Option

New York Mets catcher Omar Narvaez exercised his $7 million player option for the 2024 season on Thursday, so he will return to Queens next year. This move doesn't come as a surprise with Narvaez slated to earn $7 million next season as the primary backup to up-and-coming young backstop Francisco Alvarez. The 31-year-old Narvaez is a glove-first catcher who hit a weak .211/.283/.297 in 49 games for the Mets in 2023 with two home runs, five doubles, seven RBI and 12 runs scored in 146 plate appearances in his first year with the Mets. Narvaez can be avoided in fantasy drafts next spring in the vast majority of leagues. Alvarez is the fantasy backstop you want.

Mets Reinstate Omar Narvaez From Injured List

The New York Mets reinstated catcher Omar Narvaez (calf) from the 60-day injured list on Monday and designated catcher Tomas Nido for assignment in a corresponding move. Narvaez will return to the big-league roster after missing the last two months with a pretty serious left-calf strain. With Nido out of the picture, the 31-year-old veteran backstop will split playing time behind the dish with rising catching prospect Francisco Alvarez. Narvaez had only 14 at-bats before going down with his calf injury, and he had four hits, two RBI and a run scored. Alvarez has picked things up offensively after a slow start, and he'll have much more offensive upside than Narvaez moving forward.

Omar Narvaez To Begin His Rehab Assignment Thursday

New York Mets backstop Omar Narvaez (calf) is ready to start his rehab assignment and will join High-A Brooklyn on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The one-time All-Star has been out of action since April 5 after suffering a calf strain. Before the injury, Narvaez was hitting .286 with no home runs over just five games. The 31-year-old should return to the Mets in early June if all goes well. When he is back, expect him to take Gary Sanchez's spot on the roster and back up fellow catcher Francisco Alvarez. Without everyday playing time, Narvaev is irrelevant in just about every league.

Omar Narvaez Almost Ready For A Rehab Assignment

New York Mets catcher Omar Narvaez (calf) is nearing a rehab assignment, which should come late next week, according to MLB.com. The 31-year-old went on the injured list after suffering a calf strain on April 5. He isn't eligible to return until June 5, but that might not be out of reach as things are heading in the right direction. Narvaez was hitting .286 with one run and two RBI before the ailment, but he struggled mightily in 2022, slashing .206/.292/.305 with four homers across 84 games. The Mets recently recalled backstop Gary Sanchez, so fantasy managers can expect to see Francisco Alvarez and Sanchez sharing time behind the plate for now.

Omar Narvaez Put On Injured List, Could Miss 8-9 Weeks

Updating a previous report, New York Mets catcher Omar Narvaez (calf) underwent tests on Thursday morning that showed a medium- to high-grade strain of his left calf. He will be put on the injured list, and a typical return to play for this type of injury is around eight to nine weeks. It's a tough break for Narvaez, who was playing well both offensively and defensively in the early going. The Mets are calling up top prospect Francisco Alvarez to replace Narvaez, and he should be in the starting lineup on Friday against the Miami Marlins. Alvarez, a 21-year-old catcher, needs to be added in any leagues where he's available. He's expected to split playing time behind the dish with Tomas Nido while Narvaez is out, but he should serve as the primary catcher with much more offensive upside than Nido.

Omar Narvaez Could Go On Injured List

The feeling around the New York Mets clubhouse on Thursday morning was that catcher Omar Narvaez (calf) would probably need a stint on the injured list after leaving Wednesday's game with discomfort in his left calf. "I felt tightness," Narvaez said. "I'd rather call it for a day and be safe for the next day. I couldn't put myself at risk for the whole season. I wasn't going to play the hero." If Narvaez ends up landing on the IL, top prospect Francisco Alvarez would be called up for Friday's game. It's a tough break for Narvaez, who has hit .286 in the early going while contributing strong defense behind the plate for the Mets. Alvarez didn't look great this spring, but he's hit two homers in four games so far for Triple-A Syracuse.

Omar Narvaez Joins Mets On One-Year Deal

The New York Mets and free-agent catcher Omar Narvaez agreed to a one-year deal worth $8 million on Thursday that includes a $7 million player option for the 2024 season. Narvaez comes to Queens after serving as the Milwaukee Brewers' primary catcher over the last three years. He made the All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2021, but he took a big step back in 2022 by slashing just .206/.292/.305 with four home runs, 23 RBI and 21 runs scored in 296 plate appearances and 84 games played. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter will join a Mets roster that already includes backstops Francisco Alvarez (a top prospect), James McCann and Tomas Nido. Alvarez is eventually expected to become the primary catcher, so playing time might be hard to come by for Narvaez in his new digs.

Omar Narvaez Activated From Injured List

The Milwaukee Brewers activated catcher Omar Narvaez (quadriceps) from the 10-day injured list on Saturday and optioned catcher Mario Feliciano to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move. Narvaez went 3-for-8 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in two minor league rehab games with Nashville before the Brewers felt comfortable bringing him back to the big leagues as their primary backstop. He should be back in the starting lineup on Saturday against right-hander Marcus Stroman and the Chicago Cubs. The 30-year-old veteran catcher will return to a .237/.324/.363 slash line in 2022 with four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored in 190 at-bats for the Brew Crew.

Omar Narvaez Likely To Return Saturday

Milwaukee Brewers skipper Craig Counsell said that catcher Omar Narvaez (quadriceps) will probably return from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. In two games on his minor league rehab assignment for Triple-A Nashville, Narvaez has gone 3-for-8 with two RBI and a run scored, so he's nearing a return to the major league roster. The 30-year-old will return to primary catching duties for Milwaukee when he's activated. He's hit a very modest .237/.324/.363 with four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored for the Brew Crew this year in only 190 at-bats. Victor Caratini and Mario Feliciano have been splitting playing time behind the dish with Narvaez on the injured list.

Omar Narvaez Nearing Rehab Assignment

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Omar Narvaez (quad) is roughly a week away from beginning a rehab assignment, according to manager Craig Counsell. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since August 4 due to a left quad strain. The expectation is that he'll report to Triple-A Nashville within the next week. He should only need a few games before he's ready to return to the big league roster. Victor Caratini should continue to be the primary catcher in Milwaukee until Narvaez is ready to return.
