Joey Loperfido News
Houston Astros outfield prospect Joey Loperfido is being promoted from Triple-A Sugar Land, per Ari Alexander. Loperfido currently has the most home runs in professional baseball with 13 and has posted a .287/.393/.713 stat line with five swiped bags across 25 games this season. The Astros have had a rough start to the season, and they are hoping that their sixth-ranked prospect will provide a much-needed spark. The 24-year-old should be expected to see time in left field or at first base over the struggling Chas McCormick and Jose Abreu. While his strikeout rate is high, Loperfido is a must-add in all formats and is worth spending at least 10% of your FAAB budget on simply due to his power potential alone.
Houston Astros outfield prospect Joey Loperfido continued his dominant season for Triple-A Sugar Land by going 3-for-5 with three runs and two solo home runs on Wednesday. The homers were Nos. 11 and 12, and by doing so, Loperfido tied a Triple-A record with Yordan Alvarez with 12 round-trippers in his first 21 games. In addition to his power, he is also hitting .279 with 26 RBI and a shiny 1.106 OPS. The outfielder's biggest weakness is his plate discipline and he will need to improve on that when he adjusts to big-league pitching. Loperfido had a nice Grapefruit League performance for the Astros, but Jon Singleton got the final bench spot for the big-league club. Loperfido has responded by tearing the cover off the ball for Sugar Land and could soon force the hand of the big-league club with the offense needing a spark. Loperfido should firmly be on the radar of fantasy managers in all formats, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a jump start and stash the youngster.
Houston Astros prospect Joey Loperfido has made his second appearance in our Hot Prospects series over the last three weeks. He ranks No. 3 among Astros outfield prospects but boasts the potential to be an everyday standout in Houston. He runs well, has a strong blend of contact and power, and boasts positional versatility with his ability to play the outfield, first base, or second base. These strengths certainly make up for his average defense and strikeout tendencies. Over six games last week, Loperfido went 11-for-26 with five home runs, 13 RBI, six walks, and 10 strikeouts. He also stole one base along the way. As his hot start continues, don't be surprised if Houston summons him to the majors sooner rather than later.

Houston Astros outfield prospect Joey Loperfido quickly progressed through the team's system in 2023. The Duke product opened the season in High-A and eventually played his final 32 games in Triple-A. Loperfido tallied a .278 AVG, .370 OBP, .510 SLG, 25 round-trippers, and swiped 27 bags across three levels of minor league ball in 2023. He saw a significant uptick in power as his 25 home runs were more than double his 2022 total of 12. Another exciting component to the former seventh-rounder's 2023 season was that while primarily he started at center field, he saw several opportunities in left field, right field, and even at first and second base. As a utility player, he could have many opportunities to see starts when he receives the call. However, Loperfido will most likely reach the majors as a center fielder, as most of the other positions are occupied by some of the best players in the sport. If the left-handed bat were to impress in Spring Training, he might even make the Opening Day roster, especially with his potent combination of power, speed, and defensive flexibility.
