Cam Smith Hits Two Taters On Friday

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith had his best day as a big-leaguer on Friday, smacking two homers in a 6-4 win over the San Diego Padres. Smith hit a three-run shot in the second inning to put the Astros ahead, then added a solo homer in the fourth for some insurance. Although he hasn't gotten off to a flying start, Smith has flashed some upside, hitting three homers and swiping a base in just 49 at-bats. Holding onto the rookie while he figures things out at the major league level would be a wise move.

Cam Smith Hits First MLB Home Run

Houston Astros third base/outfield prospect Cam Smith went 2-for-4 with a home run during their victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday evening. Smith would knock an RBI single in the sixth inning. Later in the eighth inning, Smith would launch his first MLB long ball, which also scored outfielder Jake Meyers. In addition to his production at the plate this evening, Smith also swiped a bag. After tallying just two hits over his first six games of the season with a 2:9 BB:K, the top prospect has begun to turn the corner. Smith has tallied at least one hit in each of his past three games and two hits in each of his previous two games. The former 14th overall pick from last year's MLB Draft was able to earn a spot on the MLB roster during spring training. Given his recent surge, fantasy managers should expect him to continue to see opportunities in the starting nine.

Cam Smith Starting To Turn The Corner In The Majors

Houston Astros third base/outfield prospect Cam Smith is beginning to turn the corner in the majors. After tallying just two hits across his first six contests, Smith began to see his playing time decrease. However, Smith has tallied at least one hit in each of the previous two contests, including a triple on Tuesday. In addition, Smith has tallied at least one RBI in each contest. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his development in the majors as the Astros may continue to slightly limit his playing if he can't show consistency. Smith was the headliner piece in the Kyle Tucker trade in the offseason. The Cubs selected Smith with the 14th overall pick in last year's MLB Draft. Smith was able to make the MLB roster out of camp. Fantasy managers in deeper formats should continue to hold Smith on their roster.

Cam Smith On The Bench Again

Houston Astros prospect Cam Smith will start on the bench for a second straight game for Monday's series opener against the hosting Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Mauricio Dubon will make the start in right field and will hit ninth against Mariners ace Logan Gilbert. Smith was amazing during spring training, slashing .342/.419/.711 with a 1.129 OPS, four home runs and 11 RBI in 15 Grapefruit League games, but it hasn't carried over to his first six MLB games in his rookie season. So far in 21 plate appearances, the 22-year-old has gone just 2-for-18 with two walks and nine strikeouts for a .111 batting average. Last year's No. 14 overall pick will hopefully benefit from a couple of days off, but fantasy managers may not want to reinsert him into their starting lineups this week until he shows signs of breaking out of his slump. Dubon has three hits in 10 career at-bats against Gilbert but will be a weak DFS play.

Cam Smith Collects First Career Hit On Opening Day

Houston Astros rookie right fielder Cam Smith wasted no time at all in collecting his first career MLB hit, slapping a single to the opposite field on the first pitch he saw from Clay Holmes, finishing 1-for-3 in Thursday's 3-1 victory over the Mets on Opening Day. It has been a meteoric rise for the 2024 first-round draft pick, progressing from Single-A to Double-A in his first taste of professional baseball last season, to making the Astros' Opening Day roster after a blistering spring in which he slashed .342/.419/.711 with four home runs in 38 at-bats. The 22-year-old batted seventh in the order on Thursday, but as long as he's getting regular at-bats, he should at least be a viable bench option in most fantasy leagues until he proves otherwise.

Cam Smith Starting On Opening Day

Houston Astros third baseman/outfield prospect Cam Smith is in the Opening Day lineup. Smith will cover right field and bat seventh. Smith was one of the top performers in spring training and was able to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. In camp, Smith posted an elite .342/.419/.711 slash line with a triple and four long balls. He held a 5:11 BB:K. Smith was drafted by the Chicago Cubs with the 14th pick in last year's draft out of Florida State. Smith received a brief look in the minors last season. He posted an impressive .313/.396/.609 slash line with five doubles, four triples, and seven long balls across 32 contests split between Low-A, High-A, and Double-A. In the offseason, the Astros acquired him in a package that sent Kyle Tucker to Chicago. Fantasy managers should view Smith as a solid play in DFS given his strong spring facing converted Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes.

Cam Smith Makes Astros Opening Day Roster

Houston Astros prospect Cam Smith, who is starting in right field and batting fifth for the second straight day in Tuesday's exhibition against Triple-A Sugar Land, has officially made the team's Opening Day roster despite playing in just 32 minor-league games, according to three league sources. The 22-year-old is expected to start in right field on Thursday on Opening Day against the New York Mets. His 32 minor-league games played before making a big-league roster are the third-fewest of any player in MLB's draft era. Smith slashed .342/.419/.711 in spring training and exceeded all expectations after he was the key player in return when the Astros traded Kyle Tucker to the Cubs in the offseason. There are questions about his defense, but last year's 14th overall pick has been prolific on offense and will be relevant in all fantasy leagues as long as he plays regularly in 2025.

Cam Smith Hits Two-Run Triple In Monday's Exhibition Contest

Houston Astros outfield prospect Cam Smith started in right field for the Astros' exhibition game on Monday against their Triple-A affiliate, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, and went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple and a run scored. It was the 22-year-old's first game at Houston's home field now that the team has wrapped up Grapefruit League play, and he continued his push for an Opening Day roster spot. The 2024 first-round draft pick was fired up after the triple and manager Joe Espada was quoted as saying, "We love that, the guys really enjoy the energy and the passion. We need some of that." If the youngster can secure a spot, which seems very likely at this point, he'd be worthy of consideration for a bench spot in deep-mixed fantasy leagues.

Cam Smith Starting In Right Field On Monday

Houston Astros prospect Cam Smith is making the start in right field and is hitting sixth for Monday's exhibition contest against Triple-A Sugar Land. The Astros haven't made any official decisions on their final roster for Opening Day this Thursday, but the fact that the 22-year-old Smith is in the lineup at all on Monday is a good indication that he'll break camp with the team this year. He could also very well be the team's Opening Day right fielder after impressing to the tune of a .342/.419/.711 slash line with a 1.129 OPS, four home runs, a triple, 11 RBI and eight runs scored in 15 Grapefruit League games this spring. If Smith opens the year on the Opening Day roster, the Astros aren't just going to park him on the bench, so he should at least be in a platoon with veteran Chas McCormick. Smith should already be stashed in keeper leagues, but he could be worth a bench spot in deep-mixed leagues as well.

Cam Smith Stays Hot, Smacks Fourth Spring Home Run

Houston Astros third base/outfield prospect Cam Smith continued his hot hitting on Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in an 8-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Mets. The home run was his fourth of the spring and he's now collected 11 RBI. Just a couple of days ago, it was reported that Smith had a "good" chance at making the Opening Day roster, and he hasn't done anything since then to make that any less true, only reinforced it. If he were to make the roster, it would likely be to play right field, with incumbent right fielder Chas McCormick hitting just .143 (4-for-28) this spring, although he does own an impressive 11:4 BB:K and has stolen four bags. Smith was selected in the first round of the 2024 Draft, and with 32 minor league games under his belt (none higher than Double-A), it would be quite the ascension if he were to make the roster, but the Florida State product appears to be forcing the team's hand. Going after pick 400 in current fantasy drafts, he could be a worthy late-round stash just in case and could be a steal if he managed to stick with the team for the entire season.
