Cam Smith Still Worth a Look on the Waiver Wire?

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith started the month of April on fire at the plate, going 15-for-47 (.319) with two home runs, four doubles, nine RBI, seven runs scored, and two stolen bases in 51 plate appearances across 13 games for the Astros to put himself firmly on the map as a waiver-wire pickup in fantasy baseball leagues. The 23-year-old former 14th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2024 out of Florida State has gone 2-for-22 (.091) with no homers, one RBI, three runs scored, a steal, three walks, and seven strikeouts in seven games since, though. Smith is slashing .239/.324/.398 with a .721 OPS, three home runs, five doubles, 11 RBI, 15 runs scored, and four stolen bases in his first 26 games of 2026. In 134 contests in his rookie campaign, Smith hit .236 (104-for-441) with nine homers, 51 RBI, and eight stolen bases. Smith has cooled off recently, but he's still a young, intriguing power/speed asset that could do damage in stretches. He's currently rostered in just under 50% of Yahoo leagues.

Cam Smith a Must-Add Ahead of Potential Breakout

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith is off to a hot start in 2026, going 11-for-31 (.355) over his last nine games with three home runs, six RBI, and six runs scored. The former first-round draft pick is slashing .273/.385/.523 overall with a .407 wOBA and 170 wRC+. Notably, the 23-year-old appears to be finally using his 96th-percentile sprint speed, with three steals already this season, which is about a 30-steal pace; he stole eight all of last season in 134 games. A 26.9 percent strikeout rate is on the high side, but he's been able to help offset that with a well-above-average 13.5 percent walk rate thus far. The 6-foot-3 slugger could be having a true breakout campaign, and although he is available in 40 percent of Yahoo! leagues, the right-handed hitter should be rostered in most formats.

Cam Smith Off to a Hot Start, Becoming a Must-Add in All Leagues

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith is off to a scorching start this season. He is slashing .297/.422/.595 with three home runs, six RBI, nine runs, and three stolen bases across nine games. The 23-year-old is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and has homered twice in the last three contests. His wOBA has increased from .298 to .399 compared to last season, while his hard-hit percentage has gone up from 40.8% to 47.8%, and his K% has decreased from 27.8% to 25%. Smith is Houston's starting right fielder, and his hot start has kept his bat in a potent Astros lineup that includes Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Pena, and Jose Altuve. He has moved to the No. 1 spot on the RotoBaller waiver wire rankings list for Week 2 and has become a must-add due to his hot start. Only rostered in 37% of Yahoo Fantasy leagues, Smith should be a priority for fantasy managers searching for outfield help.

Cam Smith to See Time in Center Field This Spring

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said that outfielder Cam Smith will play some center field in spring training, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Reports this offseason have suggested that Smith isn't a lock for an Opening Day roster spot, but adding versatility in center field definitely will help his cause. The 22-year-old former first-rounder played well defensively in right field in 2025 in his first year in the big leagues while also slashing .236/.312/.358 with a .671 OPS, nine home runs, 51 RBI, 55 runs scored, and eight stolen bases in 134 games played. The 22-year-old was brought up to the big leagues quickly, which makes his struggles less surprising. Smith carried a 27.8% strikeout rate, 90 wRC+, 6.9% barrel rate, and 45.1% ground-ball rate. Because of the possibility that Smith will start the 2026 season at Triple-A Sugar Land, he's a very risky investment in single-year fantasy leagues.

Cam Smith Not Guaranteed a Roster Spot

Houston Astros third baseman/outfielder Cam Smith is not guaranteed a spot on the major league roster to begin the 2026 season. Chandler Rome of The Athletic notes that the team's general manager, Dana Brown, has made it clear that Smith will have to "prove himself" in camp to make the Opening Day roster. The Astors acquired Smith from the Chicago Cubs last offseason in exchange for Kyle Tucker. Smith was selected by the Cubs in the opening round of the 2024 MLB Draft with the 14th overall pick out of Florida State. Smith was given a lead role in the Houston offense in all of 2025 but posted an underwhelming .236/.312/.358 line with 21 doubles, nine home runs, and eight stolen bases across 134 games. If Smith were to miss out on a roster spot, top prospect Brice Matthews would likely see more opportunities in the outfield.

Mauricio Dubon, Cam Smith Both Resting on Saturday

Houston Astros infielder Mauricio Dubon and rookie outfielder Cam Smith will both start on the bench for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Ramon Urias will make the start for the 'Stros at second base and hit eighth against Yankees right-hander Luis Gil. Jose Altuve is serving as the designated hitter and will bat third, with Taylor Trammell in left field and Jesus Sanchez in right field. Dubon will continue to get at-bats at the keystone for Houston, and he has a hit in each of his last four games played. Smith has gone 4-for-23 with an RBI and five K's in six games so far in August. Sanchez is the one you want to target for DFS lineups on Saturday over Trammell. He has never faced Gil in his career but has gone 8-for-29 (.276) with four doubles and an RBI in his first seven games after the Astros acquired him from the Marlins at the trade deadline.

Jose Altuve, Cam Smith Resting on Wednesday

Houston Astros outfielders Jose Altuve and Cam Smith are both out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Cooper Hummel is making the start in left field and is batting seventh, while Chas McCormick is in right and is hitting eighth versus Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. This will be Altuve's first day off since June 10. The 35-year-old nine-time All-Star continues to produce despite moving to the outfield in 2025, as he's currently batting .280 (106-for-378) with 17 home runs, 53 RBI, 55 runs and six stolen bases. He's also been hot lately, going 13-for-36 (.361) with a homer, four doubles and three RBI in the last nine games over 14 days. Hummel has faded into more of a part-time role in Houston's outfield in recent weeks, with more playing time given to both McCormick and Taylor Trammell.

Cam Smith Stays Hot in Loss

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith posted another productive performance in a 7-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. The 22-year-old rookie finished a home run short of the cycle in a 3-for-5, three-RBI game. He now has three straight multi-hit games and six in his past seven contests. Smith understandably got off to a slow start over the first few weeks of the season as he adjusted to the bigs. Now, just one year removed from going in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, Smith has established himself as a quality regular. He's slashing .291/.359/.445 with seven homers, 38 RBI, 34 runs scored, and four steals in 281 trips to the plate. Smith ranks in the top 25 percent of hitters in xwOBA and xBA, making his output all the more impressive.

Cam Smith Doubles, Homers Twice, Drives in Three on Tuesday

Houston Astros outfielder Cam Smith had a huge game in his team's 13-3 win over the Athletics on Tuesday. Smith went 4-for-5 with a double, two homers, three runs, and three RBI in the lopsided victory. The rookie outfielder notched a pair of solo homers off Athletics starter JP Sears, one in the second inning and one in the fourth. Smith is now hitting .266 with 12 doubles, five homers, 26 runs, 26 RBI, and three stolen bases across 199 at-bats on the season. With two homers and nine RBI over his past seven games, Smith is worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues while he is on a hot streak.

Cam Smith Launches Two Home Runs in Victory

Houston Astros third baseman/outfielder Cam Smith went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three runs, and three RBI during their victory over the Athletics on Tuesday evening. Smith would launch his first long ball of the contest in the second frame, which was a solo shot off Athletics left-hander JP Sears. Then in the fourth, Smith would hit another solo blast off Spears. In the final frame, Smith would conclude his evening with an RBI double, which scored Christian Walter. This was also Smith's second-straight game tallying at least one extra-base hit and fifth-straight game tallying at least one hit. Since June 1, Smith has posted a solid .286/.300/.490 line has begun to find his footing in the majors. Over his first 45 games, Smith held a .260/.347/.387 line. Given his increasing power production, Smith is worth adding in all standard leagues as he should continue to see an everyday role in the starting lineup.
