Jeremy Pena on the Verge of a Rehab Assignment?

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) will "hopefully" run the bases in Cincinnati on Saturday or Sunday, manager Joe Espada told the Houston Chronicle's Matt Kawahara. It will be Pena's final hurdle before being cleared to start a minor-league rehab assignment. It's been almost four weeks since Pena landed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain, but he's nearing his return to Houston's starting lineup. That's great news for a struggling Astros team that recently lost veteran infielder Carlos Correa (ankle) for the rest of the 2026 season. Pena recovered from a fractured finger just in time for Opening Day in late March, and he played in just 10 games before injuring his hamstring. The 28-year-old Dominican infielder nearly had his first 20-20 season as a first-time All-Star in 2025 and hit above .300 in 125 games played, which is why he's rostered in 80% of Yahoo leagues despite being on the IL. If he can avoid a setback on his rehab assignment, Pena could be back with the Astros by the end of next weekend.

Jeremy Pena Could Start Rehab Assignment This Weekend

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) could start a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Pena appears close to rejoining the Astros after being shut down in the middle of April with a Grade 1 right-hamstring strain. It's been an injury-plagued 2026 season for Pena so far, as he recovered from a fractured finger just in time for Opening Day in late March. The 28-year-old Dominican shortstop will return to starting duties at the 6 for Houston when he's activated, making him worth stashing everywhere. He's currently rostered in 81% of Yahoo fantasy baseball leagues. In 43 at-bats before tweaking his hamstring, Pena had 11 hits (no homers), no RBI, five runs scored, and an RBI. When he returns, veteran Carlos Correa is expected to shift back to the hot corner, which will make regular playing time harder to come by for Isaac Paredes. Pena was a first-time All-Star in 2025, slashing .304/.363/.477 with an .840 OPS, 17 homers, 62 RBI, 20 stolen bases, and 68 runs scored in 125 games.

Jeremy Pena Takes Live Batting Practice, "Getting Close" to Rehab Assignment

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) took live batting practice on Tuesday and faced left-handed closer Josh Hader (biceps) in Houston, manager Joe Espada told Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle. Pena may be "getting close" to going on a minor-league rehab assignment, per Espada. It's been an injury-plagued year for Pena so far in 2026, as he was also recovering from a fractured finger that he suffered in March at the start of the regular season. He played in 10 games for the Astros, going 11-for-43 (.256) with a stolen base before landing on the 10-day injured list with a right-hamstring strain. Pena's injury has opened up consistent playing time for Isaac Paredes at third base, with veteran Carlos Correa shifting over to cover the 6 in Houston. Now that he has been cleared to face live pitching, though, Pena isn't far off from a rehab assignment. Barring a setback once he resumes playing in games, Pena could rejoin the big-league roster in early May. When healthy, Pena is the Astros' starting shortstop. He was a first-time All-Star in 2025, when he came just three homers shy of his first 20-20 season in the big leagues. Pena is rostered in 82% of Yahoo leagues right now as he nears his return.

Jeremy Pena Lands on 10-Day Injured List With Hamstring Strain

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) is going on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. The Astros initially believed that Pena was dealing with posterior right-knee tightness, but the 28-year-old is actually dealing with a hamstring strain that will likely keep him out for longer than 10 days. Pena was also eased into the start of the 2026 regular season due to a fractured finger that he suffered in mid-March while preparing for the World Baseball Classic. Fantasy managers should keep the 20-20 candidate stashed in all leagues. While Pena recovers from his hamstring strain, veteran Carlos Correa is expected to slide over to shortstop in Houston, with Isaac Paredes seeing regular playing time at the hot corner. Pena, who was a first-time All-Star in 2025, has hit .256/.304/.349 with no home runs, four doubles, no RBI, five runs scored, and one stolen base in his first 10 games this year. So far, it's turning out to be an injury-plagued campaign for Pena.

Jeremy Pena Leaves Early on Saturday With Knee Tightness

The Houston Astros announced that shortstop Jeremy Pena (knee) was taken out of Saturday's game against the Seattle Mariners early with right posterior knee tightness. Pena went 1-for-3 in the contest with a single and was eventually replaced by pinch-runner Nick Allen in the fourth inning. The 28-year-old Dominican shortstop also dealt with a fractured finger in spring training and was eased back in for the start of the 2026 regular season before hurting his knee on Saturday night. The extent of the injury is uncertain at this time, but more likely than not, Pena won't be in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale on Sunday. He came into Saturday's game with 10 hits in 40 at-bats (.250 average) with no homers, no RBI, five runs, and a stolen base. For now, we'll consider Pena day-to-day. But if he does miss extended time, it will be good news for Isaac Paredes, who would see regular starts at third base with Carlos Correa likely moving to shortstop. Pena, who is very capable of a 20-20 season if he stays healthy, should be held onto in all fantasy leagues, even if he goes on the injured list.

Astros Continue to Monitor Jeremy Pena's Usage, Remains Out on Wednesday

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is out of the lineup on Wednesday as the team continues to ease him back into action following a fractured finger that he suffered this spring. The right-handed slugger went 1-for-5 in Tuesday's contest, and although he is out of the lineup Wednesday, Pena could play in back-to-back games this weekend, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. The 28-year-old is 3-for-15 (.200) so far this season with two runs scored and a stolen base. If the former third-round draft pick returns Friday, it would be against left-hander Jeffrey Springs for the Athletics, and Pena has hit lefties better for his career, with a .302/.344/.468 slash line against them compared to .259/.311/.397 against righties.

Jeremy Pena Back in Tuesday's Lineup

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is back at the 6 and is leading off for the Astros on Tuesday against the visiting Boston Red Sox and right-hander Brayan Bello, according to MLB.com. Pena will be playing in his third game of the young season on Tuesday as the Astros ease him in following a fractured finger that he recovered from this spring. The veteran shortstop has gone 2-for-10 (.200) at the plate with a run scored, a stolen base, and two strikeouts in his two games played. Carlos Correa shifts back to third base, with Isaac Paredes heading to the bench on Tuesday night. Fantasy managers will want to get Pena back into their starting lineups for the second game of the series at Daikin Park against the BoSox. Pena has one hit in his four career at-bats against Bello with a .900 OPS.

Jeremy Pena Off Again on Monday

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena will take another day off on Monday for the series opener against the visiting Boston Red Sox at Daikin Park, per MLB.com. Carlos Correa will shift over to shortstop again, with Isaac Paredes making the start at third base against Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez. Pena has started just two of the team's first four games of the 2026 regular season as the Astros ease him in following his recovery from a fractured finger that he suffered during an exhibition game earlier in March while preparing for the World Baseball Classic. Pena has gone 2-for-10 with a run scored and a stolen base in the two games he's played so far. He should be back in the lineup at shortstop for the Astros for the second game of the series against Boston on Tuesday evening. Paredes is hitless in just two career at-bats against Suarez, while Correa has never faced the southpaw in his career.

Jeremy Pena Back in Lineup for Series Finale

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is back in the starting lineup for the team's series finale on Sunday against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels, batting out of the leadoff spot against right-hander Jack Kochanowicz. Pena did not play in the Opening Day loss on Thursday while recovering from a fractured finger that he suffered earlier this spring while preparing for the World Baseball Classic, but he returned on Friday to go 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double before resting again in the team's win on Saturday. With Pena back in there, Carlos Correa will move back to third base, and Isaac Paredes will start at second base. Jose Altuve will serve as the designated hitter. The Astros are being careful not to overwork Pena early in the regular season, but his outing on Friday proved that his finger issue shouldn't be a problem when it comes to hitting. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues will want to get him back in their starting lineups on Sunday. Pena has one hit in just two career at-bats against Kochanowicz.

Jeremy Pena Resting on Saturday

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is getting the day off on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels at Daikin Park, according to MLB.com. Pena did not start on Opening Day on Thursday due to a fractured finger that he suffered earlier this spring while preparing for the World Baseball Classic, but he made his 2026 season debut in Friday night's loss and went 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base. Veteran Carlos Correa will make another start at the 6 on Saturday, with Isaac Paredes starting at third base against Angels left-hander Reid Detmers. The 28-year-old Pena's performance on Friday was a good sign that his finger won't affect his production at the plate early in the season. Pena should be back in the starting lineup and at shortstop for the series finale against the Halos on Sunday. Correa has hit .222 with a homer and three RBI in nine career at-bats against Detmers, while Paredes has hit .333 against him with one RBI in six at-bats.
