Hunter Brown, Cristian Javier Could Return in Late May

Houston Astros starting pitchers Hunter Brown (shoulder) and Cristian Javier (shoulder) aren't expected to be back in the mix until late May or early June. Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters the expected timetable on Sunday, but is hopeful that both pitchers can be back sooner than expected. Both right-handers suffered Grade 2 right shoulder strains within a week of each other. Given the extent of the injury, both pitchers are looking at lengthy buildups. They'll likely need to ramp up throwing sessions before going on multiple rehab starts. Fantasy managers won't have either pitcher back in the mix for at least another month or so. Brown is worth holding through the injury, while Javier can be dropped for a healthy arm.

Hunter Brown Not Dealing With Any Ligament Damage

Houston Astros right-hander Hunter Brown (shoulder) will be re-evaluated in two weeks, manager Joe Espada told The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Both Espada and general manager Dana Brown said that Brown's shoulder strain is muscular in nature and doesn't involve any ligament damage. It could have been far worse for Brown, who was diagnosed with a Grade 2 shoulder strain on Tuesday. The 27-year-old will be shut down from throwing "for a few weeks," but barring a setback, he could return to the Astros' starting rotation in June. It's a tough break for the Astros and fantasy managers, though, as Brown is one of the best all-around pitchers in baseball after a breakout 2025 campaign. It was looking like more of the same in 2026, too, before he injured his shoulder. In his first two starts, he gave up just one earned run on five hits while walking six and striking out 17 in 10 2/3 innings. Brown needs to be stashed in an injured list spot while he recovers in all fantasy baseball formats.

Hunter Brown Diagnosed with Grade 2 Shoulder Strain

Houston Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown (shoulder) is looking at a lengthy absence after being placed on the injured list earlier this month. On Tuesday, it was announced that Brown has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 shoulder strain. The team will shut him down from throwing for a few weeks. It could've been worse, but this is certainly a tough blow to the Astros and for fantasy managers. Through two starts, Brown allowed one run while striking out 17 batters across 10.2 innings of work. The hope is that Brown is back to throwing in a few weeks, but he'll likely still need to go on a minor league rehab assignment. It's hard to imagine Brown being ready by the end of April, but we'll see how he progresses. In the meantime, Spencer Arrighetti figures to take over the vacant spot in the starting rotation.

Hunter Brown Felt Something in His Shoulder on Friday

Houston Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown (right shoulder) initially felt something in his shoulder on Friday, manager Joe Espada told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. He had some imaging done in Sacramento before flying back to Houston to be evaluated by team doctors. After being evaluated, Brown was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain, retroactive to April 2. It's a crushing loss for the Astros. Brown is their ace and had been off to a 1-0 start with a 0.84 ERA through two starts. Across 10.2 innings of work, he has allowed five hits and six walks while striking out 17 batters. The team hasn't provided a timeline for his return, nor have they clarified who will take his spot in the rotation. Christian Roa was called up to fill his void on the 26-man roster, but he hasn't started a game since 2024 in the minors.

Hunter Brown Placed on 15-Day Injured List with Right-Shoulder Strain

The Houston Astros have placed right-handed pitcher Hunter Brown (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder strain. According to Matt Kawahara of The Houston Chronicle, this transition is retroactive to April 2. In a corresponding move, the Astros promoted Christian Roa from Triple-A Sugar Land. Brown made his last outing on March 31 against the Boston Red Sox. In this start, the ace looked like his dominant self, logging six innings of one-run ball with just one hit and two walks. He struck out eight hitters. In his season debut, Brown tossed 4 2/3 innings with four hits, four walks, no runs, and nine punchouts. While Brown remains on the shelf, the Astros could turn to right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, who was unable to crack the team's Opening Day roster.

Hunter Brown Looking to Build On 2025 Breakout in 2026

Houston Astros right-hander Hunter Brown established himself as one of the best starting pitchers in baseball in 2025, recording a 12-9 record with a 2.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 206 strikeouts across 185 1/3 innings (31 starts). The 27-year-old boosted his strikeout rate to a career-best 28.3% while lowering his walk rate to a career-low 7.8%. Brown benefited from an elevated 82% strand rate, so he may see some regression in his ERA in 2026. Still, Brown has gotten better in each of his three full big-league seasons to this point and appears to have a safe production floor as he enters the prime years of his career. Brown has also been one of the more durable arms in MLB in recent seasons, recording three consecutive campaigns with at least 31 appearances. Brown should be viewed as a low-end fantasy SP1 by redraft managers heading into 2026.

Hunter Brown Named Astros Opening Day Starter

Houston Astros right-hander Hunter Brown has been named the team's Opening Day starter, manager Joe Espada told The Athletic's Chandler Rome. After a breakout 2025 campaign, Brown will be a must-start for fantasy managers in his Opening Day nod in a plus matchup against the Los Angeles Angels at home. The 27-year-old former fifth-rounder in 2019 out of Wayne State finished third in the American League Cy Young voting last year after going 12-9 with a career-best 2.43 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 206:57 K:BB in 185 1/3 innings pitched over 31 starts for the Astros. Brown was able to hold opponents to a .201 batting average with a six-pitch mix. He has a high floor because of his ability to neutralize both righties and lefties. Brown might struggle to improve on his 2025 numbers, but going into 2026 fantasy drafts, he should be considered a top-12 starting pitcher.

Hunter Brown a Top-10 Starting Pitcher After 2025 Breakout

Houston Astros right-hander Hunter Brown broke out as an All-Star in 2025 in his fourth year in the big leagues, going 12-9 with a 2.43 ERA (3.14 FIP), 1.02 WHIP, and 206:57 K:BB in 31 starts over 185 1/3 innings pitched. The 27-year-old was essentially Houston's ace. The former fifth-round selection out of Wayne State has come a long way since he had a 5.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 155 2/3 innings in 2023 in his first year in the big leagues. Brown reached the illustrious 200-strikeout mark for the first time in his career, and opposing hitters batted a tick over .200 against him. Brown has the arsenal (six pitches) to keep batters off balance and continue to be successful in 2026, but fantasy managers shouldn't necessarily expect another ERA under 3.00. Keeping the ball in the yard was a big reason for his success last year, as he allowed just 0.8 home runs per nine innings. RotoBaller has Brown ranked as the No. 8 starting pitcher.

Hunter Brown Avoids Arbitration With Astros

The Houston Astros and right-hander Hunter Brown agreed to a $5.71 million salary for 2026, avoiding arbitration, according to a source who spoke with Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Brown is coming off the best season of his young career. In 2025, he posted a 2.43 ERA (3.39 SIERA), a 28.3% strikeout rate, and a 1.03 WHIP across a career-high 185 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old Michigan native is entering the prime of his career, and that hasn't gone unnoticed in fantasy drafts. Over the past month, Brown has carried an ADP of 37, making him the seventh starting pitcher off the board. While some ERA regression is likely, given the gap between his ERA and SIERA, his strikeout ability, workload, and team context point to the fact that he should be a top-10 fantasy starter in 2026. Brown is worth his ADP.

Hunter Brown Fires Six Scoreless Innings in Victory

Houston Astros ace right-hander Hunter Brown (11-7) earned his 11th win of the season with a lights-out performance against the Texas Rangers on Saturday. The Astros cruised to an 11-0 victory behind Brown, who threw six scoreless, four-hit innings and recorded eight strikeouts against three walks. The 27-year-old hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a game since July 20 - an eight-start span - and has yielded just eight ER in 48 2/3 innings since July 26. Brown now boasts a 2.25 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP and 190:52 K:BB over 167 2/3 frames this season. He'll have a good chance to stay on a roll against a middling Atlanta Braves offense on Sept. 13.
