Bryan Abreu Pitches in Setup Role on Wednesday, Officially Out of the Closer Job?

Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu earned his second hold of the season and pitched 1 1/3 innings without giving up a hit or a run. Even though he was effective, it was not a good sign for the 28-year-old's fantasy value that he entered the game in the seventh inning with two outs. He worked a scoreless eighth inning as well but gave the ball to Enyel De Los Santos to close out the game. Abreu hasn't earned a save in any of his last five appearances, giving up five runs on five hits with eight walks and six strikeouts. He seems to have been passed by De Los Santos as the preferred option for save chances, while the team awaits the return of Josh Hader (biceps) later this season. Abreu could work his way back into that role, but for now, he doesn't carry enough fantasy value for a roster spot in standard-sized mixed leagues.

Is Bryan Abreu a Cut Candidate After Another Disaster Outing?

Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu continued to struggle on the mound during Saturday's outing against the Seattle Mariners. It has been an awful beginning to the season for Abreu, and it didn't get any better on Saturday. Abreu allowed three walks and gave up a walk-off single to J.P. Crawford to take the loss. Abreu now holds a horrendous 20.25 ERA and has allowed an earned run in all six of his outings this season. There's a chance that Abreu gets pulled from the closer role after another disastrous outing. Even if he remains the closer, Josh Hader (biceps) should be back in the mix sooner rather than later. Fantasy managers should check the waiver wire for a more consistent source of saves.

Bryan Abreu Records First Save of 2026 in Shaky Outing on Wednesday

Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu recorded his first save of 2026 on Wednesday, allowing a solo home run but also striking out three in the ninth inning of his team's 6-4 win over the Boston Red Sox. With star Astros reliever Josh Hader (biceps) currently on the injured list, Abreu has opened the year as Houston's primary closer. However, the 28-year-old has not been sharp to start the season, allowing four walks and five earned runs across 2 1/3 innings (three appearances). Before 2026, Abreu had established himself as one of the best high-leverage arms in baseball, recording a 2.28 ERA with a 35.5% strikeout rate across 71 innings in 2025. Even amidst his struggles in a small sample size this season, he's still recorded six strikeouts. Abreu should be able to hold down the closer role in Houston while Hader is injured, but the Astros could be forced to go in a different direction if Abreu continues to falter.

Bryan Abreu's Mechanics the Cause of Velocity Dip

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada thinks right-handed reliever Bryan Abreu's dip in velocity in Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Angels was due to issues with his mechanics and not any physical injury, according to Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle. Abreu's fastball averaged 93.2 mph in his outing on Sunday after averaging 97.3 mph a season ago. With his velocity being down early on, Abreu has struggled as the team's de facto closer with Josh Hader (biceps) on the injured list. He's allowed four earned runs on a home run while walking four and striking out three in 1 1/3 innings. Espada said on Monday that Abreu is "doing well." On Saturday, Abreu averaged 95.9 mph on his 12 fastballs but walked two batters and gave up a three-run homer to Nolan Schanuel. Abreu, who had a 2.28 ERA and led all relievers with 105 strikeouts in 70 outings, is capable of turning things around and needs to be rostered for saves as Houston's primary closer while Hader is sidelined.

Bryan Abreu Struggling in Closer Role So Far

Houston Astros right-handed reliever Bryan Abreu is off to a shaky start this season, allowing four earned runs over just 1 1/3 innings of work. He has allowed one hit and four walks over that span, struggling with free passes. He has also struck out three batters so far. Control has been a major issue for the 28-year-old, whose 40% strike rate is significantly below the league average. His fastball velocity is also way down, dropping from 97.2 mph in 2025 to 94.4 mph thus far. Abreu hasn't found himself in a save situation yet, but it's fair to question whether the Astros might start to lose faith in his ability to handle high-leverage outings. We already saw manager Joe Espada give a save situation to Bryan King, who converted and now has one save, five strikeouts, and a 1.64 FIP over 2.2 innings of work.

Bryan Abreu is a Late-Round Saves Candidate Worth Targeting Entering 2026

In recent seasons, Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu has established himself as one of the better high-leverage arms in all of baseball. Across 71 innings in 2025, the 28-year-old recorded three wins and seven saves while pitching to a 2.28 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 105 strikeouts. Despite his dominance, Abreu has never worked as a full-time closer in Houston, limiting his fantasy value in traditional rotisserie scoring formats. However, Astros closer Josh Hader (biceps) is set to open 2026 on the Injured List, providing Abreu a chance to work in the ninth inning. Hader is not expected to miss too much time, so Abreu's time in the closer role in Houston could be brief. Still, Abreu profiles as an extremely valuable arm for as long as he's racking up saves. If Hader suffers a setback or struggles upon his return, Abreu could emerge as a high-end fantasy reliever in 2026.

Bryan Abreu Ticketed for Ninth-Inning Role in Houston

Houston Astros reliever Bryan Abreu appears to be in a position to take over as the team's closer to begin the year. Houston's regular closer, Josh Hader (biceps), threw his first bullpen session of the spring on Tuesday, but manager Joe Espada has already ruled the veteran out for Opening Day. Abreu has been both durable and effective for the Astros over the last four years, recording a 2.30 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and a 23.9 percent K-BB% during that span. Hader is not expected to miss too much time, so Abreu's hold on the closer role should only be temporary, but given Hader's lengthy injury history and Abreu's ability to perform, there could be opportunities for additional save chances throughout the year. Bump Abreu up draft boards slightly, as the early-season save chances added to his ability to lower ratios while providing plenty of strikeouts should only bolster the 28-year-old's fantasy relevance.

Bryan Abreu Could Begin Season as the Closer

Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu could be asked to step up into the closer role to begin the regular season. Normally, Josh Hader (biceps) would fill the role, but he's currently dealing with biceps inflammation. The southpaw is playing light catch off flat ground, so he'll need to ramp up his progress to be ready in time for Opening Day. It sounds like Abreu is the next man up after posting elite numbers as the set-up man for multiple years. Last season, Abreu registered a career-high seven saves across 70 appearances with the Astros. The team has faith that Abreu can hold down the job while Hader recovers from his injury. The 28-year-old is probably the favorite for saves early in the season, assuming Hader misses time.

Bryan Abreu to Open the Season in Closer Role?

There's a chance that Houston Astros left-handed closer Josh Hader (biceps) will be forced to open the 2026 regular season on the injured list, which would open the door for right-handed reliever Bryan Abreu to begin the campaign as the team's primary closer. Hader experienced "arm soreness" before his fourth bullpen session of the winter, and imaging showed "bicep inflammation." The veteran closer will resume his throwing program on Wednesday, but Hader's status for Opening Day is now in question. The 28-year-old Abreu was one of just five relievers to record 100 strikeouts in 2025, and he did it for the third straight year. The 28-year-old Dominican added a 2.28 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a career-best seven saves in 70 relief appearances in 2025. If Hader should miss any time at all, Abreu's stock would increase dramatically.

Bryan Abreu Earns Four-Out Save Tuesday

Houston Astros interim closer Bryan Abreu picked up his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Rangers. Abreu came in to pitch the top of the eighth inning up by two with two outs and a runner on second. He allowed a walk and an RBI single, then got the third out on a pop-out. He stayed on to pitch the top of the ninth inning. He allowed a leadoff single, got the first two outs on a strikeout and a fly-out, allowed another single, and ended the game with a strikeout. The 28-year-old has struggled at times since filling in for Josh Hader (shoulder) as the team's closer, converting six of seven save opportunities but with a 5.84 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. Overall, Abreu has still been an effective fantasy reliever, earning 25 holds to go with a 2.37 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and a 13.57 K/9 rate in 68 1/3 innings of work.
