Zach Dezenzo Still Not Swinging

Houston Astros infielder/outfielder Zach Dezenzo (hand) is making progress but still isn't swinging a bat, according to MLB.com. The Astros moved Dezenzo to the 60-day injured list last Friday, and there's currently no timetable for his return. He has been sidelined since June 1 with a capsule strain in his left hand and will not return to the Astros for the start of the second half of the season this Friday. The 25-year-old will first need to resume swinging and taking part in baseball activities before the Astros even consider sending him on a minor-league rehab assignment. Whenever he recovers from his hand injury, Dezenzo will serve in a super-utility role in Houston, leaving him minimal fantasy value the rest of the year. Before his injury, Dezenzo was hitting .245/.321/.367 with a below-average .688 OPS, two home runs, 10 RBI and 17 runs in 98 at-bats.

Yordan Alvarez, Zach Dezenzo Still Not Hitting

Per Houston Astros manager Joe Espada, outfielders Yordan Alvarez (hand) and Zach Dezenzo (hand) are still not hitting. Dezenzo has been out with a capsule strain in his hand since the end of May, and though he's reportedly pain-free, he still hasn't picked up a bat. Alvarez, on the other hand, is still recovering from a fracture he sustained in his hand that has sidelined him since May 3. The team has already noted that the fantasy stalwart won't resume hitting until he's fully healed, so he still has a bit more to go. It seems likely that both athletes will require minor-league rehab assignments before rejoining the roster. However, there's been no news on that front for either player.

Zach Dezenzo Pain-Free

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said on Wednesday that outfielder Zach Dezenzo (hand) is pain-free after landing on the 10-day injured list in early June with a capsule strain in his left hand. Dezenzo hasn't swung a bat up until now, but now that he's pain-free, that should change this week. It's good news, but the 25-year-old former 12th-rounder in 2022 might still be several weeks from returning to the major-league roster. When Dezenzo does return, he'll likely resume serving as a utility player for Houston. He made his MLB debut in 2024 and hit .242 (15-for-62) with two homers and eight RBI in 19 games. In 34 games this year, Dezenzo has hit .245 (24-for-98) with two homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs scored and a stolen base. He has strong plate skills but is mostly just an asset in AL-only fantasy leagues for now.

Zach Dezenzo Dealing With Hand Sprain, Will be Evaluated in Two Weeks

The Houston Astros announced on Tuesday that imaging on infielder/outfielder Zach Dezenzo's left hand showed that he has a left-hand capsule sprain. Dezenzo has been prescribed for rest and is scheduled to be evaluated again in two weeks after landing on the 10-day injured list on Sunday. The 25-year-old suffered the injury in Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. If he gets good news in a couple weeks, it's possible that Dezenzo could be back in the big leagues before the end of the month. With designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (hand) still on the IL himself with a hand injury, the Astros recently called up outfield prospect Jacob Melton to pick up additional playing time for the team. Before his injury, Dezenzo was serving as a utility player for Houston and was hitting a modest .245 (24-for-98) with two homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs and a steal in limited playing time.

Zach Dezenzo Dealing with Left-Hand Discomfort, Remains Sidelined on Sunday

Houston Astros outfielder Zach Dezenzo (hand) exited Saturday's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays due to left-hand discomfort. Dezenzo was held out of the starting nine on Sunday. Fantasy managers should monitor his status leading up to their next contest on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. This afternoon, Dezenzo will cede a spot in the outfield for prospect Jacob Melton, who was promoted prior to Sunday's contest. Through 34 games this season, Dezenzo has posted a .245/.321/.367 slash line with six doubles, two home runs, and a stolen base. He has generated an impressive 16.7% barrel rate and a 73.5 average mph bat speed, which suggests he should see an increase in power production after this season. The Astros are a strong target in DFS facing Tampa right-hander Taj Bradley, who enters this game with a 4.38 ERA.

Zach Dezenzo Hits First Long Ball Of The Season

Houston Astros outfield prospect Zach Dezenzo went 2-for-3 with a home run during their loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon. Dezenzo went deep in the fifth inning off Chicago right-hander Bryse Wilson. This was a two-run shot that also scored first baseman Christian Walker. Through his first 17 games of the regular season, Dezenzo has posted a solid .283/.327/.413 slash line with three doubles and one home run. Even though he has had limited playing time, the No. 5-ranked prospect in the Houston system has shown upside when on the field. Under the hood, he has generated a strong 16.1 percent barrel rate with a .273 xBA. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progression as he could eventually carve out a role in the Houston starting nine.

Zach Dezenzo Busy In Monday's Victory

Houston Astros first base/outfield prospect Zach Dezenzo went 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI, and a walk during their 7-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. In the fifth inning, Dezenzo would hit an RBI double to right field, which scored outfield prospect Cam Smith. He would then come around and score on a Jose Altuve double. Later in the seventh, Dezenzo would hit his second double of the contest and would score his second run on a Yordan Alvarez single. The 24-year-old was able to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster but has had a limited role in the Houston offense. Through just eight games this season, Dezenzo has held a .222/.300/.333 line. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status, but it appears Dezenzo will have his fantasy upside limited due to his unstable playing time.

Zach Dezenzo Earns Spot On Opening Day Roster

Houston Astros infielder Zach Dezenzo has made the team's Opening Day roster, according to manager Joe Espada. Houston's fifth-ranked prospect made his major league debut for the club last season, slashing .242/.277/.371 with a pair of home runs in 65 plate appearances, even making the postseason roster, although the Astros will want to see improvement on the 33.8 percent strikeout he owned during his short stint. The 6-foot-5 slugger performed better this spring, slashing .391/.440/.630 with two home runs and a stolen base in 50 plate appearances with a 28.0 percent strikeout rate. The 24-year-old earns a bench spot for the big league club, with first baseman Christian Walker and third baseman Isaac Paredes blocking his path to playing time at his primary positions. There is potential for big power numbers if he were to get an opportunity for regular at-bats, but without a full-time role, his fantasy relevance is limited to extremely deep and AL-only leagues.

Zach Dezenzo Returns To Grapefruit League Lineup

Houston Astros infielder Zach Dezenzo (jaw) is back in the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday against the Miami Marlins, playing right field and batting cleanup. Dezenzo suffered a TMJ sprain in his jaw when he was hit in the face by a ground ball on Tuesday. The 24-year-old was cleared to play on Thursday after he avoided a concussion. He will now resume competing for one of the team's final roster spots out of camp as a bench player after playing in his first 19 major-league games in 2024. In 65 plate appearances, Dezenzo went 15-for-62 (.242) with two home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored. He's been better in spring training, going 14-for-37 (.378) with two homers, six RBI, a steal and seven runs scored in 15 Grapefruit League contests. Dezenzo is still developing as a hitter and won't carry much value in fantasy as a bench player if he makes the Opening Day roster.

Zach Dezenzo Expected To Play On Thursday

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said on Wednesday that infielder Zach Dezenzo (jaw) is expected to play in the team's Grapefruit League game on Thursday versus the Miami Marlins. Dezenzo is being seen by team doctors to make sure he doesn't have a concussion, but the 24-year-old appears to be fine after he was hit in the head by a ground ball in camp on Tuesday. He was officially diagnosed with a TMJ sprain on the left side of his jaw. The former 12th-round selection in 2022 out of Ohio State is currently hitting .378 (14-for-37) with two home runs, three doubles, six RBI, one steal and seven runs scored in 15 spring training games as he competes for a bench spot to begin the 2025 season. Dezenzo was a below-average hitter in his first 19 big-league games a year ago and probably would benefit from more time in the minors to begin the season.
