Ryan Waldschmidt Goes Deep in Return to Triple-A, Back on Stash Radar?

Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt was optioned back to Triple-A on Monday as the team felt that he needed to work on hitting breaking pitches. Then, in his first game back with Reno on Wednesday, the D-backs' top-ranked prospect did just that, sending a German Marquez (forearm) knuckle-curve over the fence for his first home run since April 26. The former first-rounder had a fantastic 2025 and a strong start to 2026 that led to his promotion to the big leagues, however, he scuffled a bit in his first taste of the majors, slashing .259/.314/.357 with zero home runs and a 32.8 percent strikeout rate in 122 plate appearances. The 23-year-old still managed to swipe five bags, though, which kept him somewhat fantasy relevant during his tenure. The right-handed hitter will hopefully get back on track at Triple-A and should be back in the big leagues later this year. Though he did not show the home run power during his 33-game debut, it is there, and together with his speed and what figures to be an improved approach, the University of Kentucky product should be back on the stash radar in deeper leagues.

Ryan Waldschmidt to Focus on Hitting Breaking Pitches in the Minors

After a strong start to his major-league career, opposing pitchers started to pepper Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt with breaking pitches in the zone, and he struggled to handle the league's adjustment, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. With the D-backs getting healthier in the outfield recently, they opted to send the 23-year-old back to Triple-A Reno to work on some things after he hit .259/.314/.357 with a .671 OPS, no home runs, eight RBI, 11 runs scored, and five stolen bases in 112 at-bats. His 32.4% strikeout rate was 10 points higher than the major-league average, although his chase rate wasn't worse than average. Manager Torey Lovullo said that Waldschmidt needs to improve at controlling counts and not trying to do damage on pitcher's pitches. The team's top prospect, per MLB Pipeline, saw 38% breaking balls, which drew a 56% whiff rate. The former 31st overall pick in 2024 out of the University of Kentucky has lots of power/speed upside and has the skills to be a mainstay in Arizona for a long time, which makes him worth stashing still in dynasty/keeper formats. Lovullo is confident that he'll be back up with Arizona again this year.

Diamondbacks Officially Send Ryan Waldschmidt to Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks officially optioned outfield prospect Ryan Waldschmidt to Triple-A Reno following Sunday's game and reinstated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. The D-backs' top prospect, per MLB Pipeline, didn't do enough in his first taste of the majors to keep a big-league roster spot after the returns of Gurriel and Jordan Lawlar. The 23-year-old former 31st overall pick in 2024 out of the University of Kentucky hit .259 (29-for-112) with no home runs, eight RBI, five stolen bases, 11 runs scored, eight walks, and 40 strikeouts in his first 33 big-league games. Waldschmidt really struggled in his last 17 games, slashing .180/.231/.262 with a 36.9% strikeout rate for the Snakes. The 6-foot, 205-pounder is still stash-worthy in dynasty/keeper leagues, but for now, he'll head back to the farm to work on his plate approach. In 34 games at Reno before his first MLB call-up, Waldschmidt hit .289/.400/.477 with an .877 OPS, three homers, 22 RBI, 30 runs, and six steals in 34 games. Most likely, Waldschmidt will be back in Arizona at some point in the second half of 2026.

Diamondbacks Expected to Demote Ryan Waldschmidt to Triple-A

According to a new report from The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks are expected to send No. 1 prospect and outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt to Triple-A Reno. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will be activated from the 10-day injured list. After a hot start to his MLB career in May, where Waldschmidt slashed .284/.346/.378 with 10 runs scored, seven RBI, and five stolen bases, he has cooled off significantly in June, hitting .211 with a .566 OPS. The 23-year-old Waldschmidt is the Diamondbacks No. 1-ranked prospect and MLB's 30th overall-ranked prospect. The overall line for Waldschmidt was .259/.314/.357 with zero home runs, 11 runs scored, five stolen bases, and eight RBI. Waldschmidt was really struggling with his plate discipline, which was evident by his 33.7 percent whiff rate, 32.8 percent strikeout rate, and 6.6 percent walk rate. His quality of contact was not much better, as he had an 86.8 mph average exit velocity and a .289 xwOBA. Waldschmidt still has a promising career in front of him, and this demotion is likely a tune-up for him to get right. Redraft fantasy managers can drop him, while dynasty managers should just be patient with him, as it's likely he gets called up again sometime later this season.

Ryan Waldschmidt an Emerging Power/Speed Target Off the Waiver Wire

Arizona Diamondbacks rookie outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt has yet to hit his first major-league home run through 97 at-bats with the big-league club, but the 23-year-old prospect is still an emerging power/speed threat to target off the waiver wire if you're searching for upside at the outfield position in fantasy baseball. The former 31st overall pick by Arizona in 2024 out of the University of Kentucky is still currently listed as the team's top prospect, per MLB Pipeline, after he hit .289/.400/.477 with an .877 OPS, three home runs, 22 RBI, 30 runs scored, and six steals in 34 games played at Triple-A Reno earlier this year. In his first 29 contests with the D-backs, Waldschmidt has gone 27-for-97 (.278) with seven doubles, a triple, eight RBI, five stolen bases, and 10 runs scored across 105 plate appearances. So far in June, he's hitting .261 (6-for-23) with two doubles and an RBI in seven games played. The numbers obviously aren't popping right now, but he should be snagged off the waiver wire in deeper leagues before he starts putting it all together. Waldschmidt is currently rostered in only 14% of Yahoo leagues.

Ryan Waldschmidt Emerging as a High-End Speed Option on the Waiver Wire

Since being called up for his MLB debut in early May, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt has made an immediate impact at the big-league level. Across 70 plate appearances, the 23-year-old is hitting .302/.362/.413 with zero home runs, seven RBI, 10 runs scored, and five stolen bases. There are a few worrying signs in Waldschmidt's profile that point to potential regression. He's struck out in 30% of his plate appearances, and his batting average has been buoyed by an unsustainably high .452 batting average on balls in play. Still, Waldschmidt stole 29 bases in the minor leagues in Triple-A and has been aggressive on the basepaths early in his MLB career. He also consistently ran double-digit walk rates in the minors, which should help him get on base consistently and stay in the lineup even if his batting average tails off. Particularly for fantasy managers in need of speed, Waldschmidt is a viable waiver wire target.

Ryan Waldschmidt Logs Another Stolen Base, Quickly Becoming a Must-Add

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Waldschmidt is hitting .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, three walks, and three stolen bases over his last five games. He has yet to hit a home run, but overall, the 23-year-old is slashing .326/.396/.419 with six RBI and four stolen bases in 48 plate appearances. He has the potential to be a five-category contributor and slashed .302/.415/.491 with 12 home runs, 25 steals, 14% BB rate, and 20% strikeout rate in 100 games between Double-A and Triple-A last summer. Waldschmidt is only rostered in 15% of Yahoo Fantasy leagues and is quickly becoming a player to add in most formats as he continues to swing a hot bat.

Ryan Waldschmidt Showcasing Five-Category Upside Early in MLB Stint

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt has impressed through his first 10 games in the majors and looks ready to be a long-time fixture in Arizona's outfield moving forward. The 23-year-old is the team's No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and has lived up to the hype, hitting .313 (6-for-32) with four doubles, three stolen bases, three walks, and six RBI. He hasn't hit a homer yet in the majors, but had 18 in 134 games in the minors in 2025 and three in 34 games in Triple-A before his promotion. He has a 16.7% barrel rate and has caught barrels in back-to-back games after going 3-for-3 with two doubles in Monday's 12-2 rout of the Giants. Waldschmidt is a great fantasy baseball addition if you need outfield depth at this point in the season and offers well-balanced production with good speed and batting average production right away.

Ryan Waldschmidt a Priority Add With Five-Category Potential?

Arizona Diamondbacks top-ranked prospect and MLB's 51st-ranked prospect, outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt, was called up to the big-league club on May 8 after the team traded Alek Thomas to the Dodgers, clearing the path for Waldschmidt to take advantage of the opportunity he's been given. Through 19 plate appearances, he's collected five hits, three RBI, one walk, one run, and one walk. Waldschmidt is a solid pure hitter with five category potential, as he slashed .289/.419/.473 with 18 home runs, 114 runs scored, 78 RBI, 29 stolen bases on the minors last year, and started 2026 in Triple-A, where he had a similar slash line of .289/.400/.477 with three home runs, 30 runs scored, 22 RBI, and six stolen bases through 156 plate appearences. In other words, he has performed and done it at every stop through his minor league career, so now it's a matter of taking off with his opportunity at the majors, and if he does, he will be a solid contributor to all five categories, making him a must-add player in five outfield leagues.

Diamondbacks Calling Up Top Prospect Ryan Waldschmidt

The Arizona Diamondbacks have called up top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt from Triple-A Reno on Friday to make his major-league debut, according to MLB Pipeline. In a corresponding move, outfielder Alek Thomas was optioned to Reno. The 23-year-old outfielder is ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 49 prospect in baseball, and he has earned his first MLB promotion after slashing .289/.400/.477 with an .877 OPS, three home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 22 RBI, six stolen bases, 30 runs scored, 19 walks, and 38 strikeouts in 34 games across 156 plate appearances with the Aces. Waldschmidt should play regularly for the Snakes in center field now that Thomas is being sent to the minors, and he'll absolutely be worth a look in single-year fantasy leagues now that he's up in the majors. The former first-rounder in 2024 out of Kentucky is currently rostered in only 5% of Yahoo leagues, so he's widely available. The 6-foot, 205-pounder has lots of fantasy upside for his above-average raw power from the right side of the plate in a hitter-friendly home environment at Chase Field.
