Ryne Nelson Pulled Early as a Precaution on Monday

SI.com's Jack Sommers writes that Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson has been dealing with more soreness than usual after his outings, which prompted manager Torey Lovullo to give him a quick hook in the team's win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Nelson was also hit by a comebacker on his leg recently and is recovering from that. The 27-year-old looked good in a no-decision in the series opener, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking one in 6 2/3 frames. In addition to recent soreness, Nelson has been on a pitch count limit as he gets stretched out. Remember, he began the year in the bullpen and was thrust into a starting role when Corbin Burnes (elbow) was lost for the season. The 88 pitches Nelson threw on Monday were a season-high. Nelson should be able to make his next start next week against the Kansas City Royals.

Ryne Nelson Taking Vacant Rotation Spot in Arizona

Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro reports that Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson will return to the starting rotation with right-hander Corbin Burnes (elbow) going on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. There's a chance Burnes could have to miss the rest of the 2025 season after injuring his right elbow in his last start on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. If that were to happen, Nelson would obviously have a big opportunity to stick around in Arizona's rotation for the long term, making him a priority waiver-wire addition for fantasy managers in deeper leagues looking for starting-pitching help at this juncture. The 27-year-old could be limited innings-wise in his next start after throwing only four innings on May 31 out of the bullpen. Nelson has never had a strikeout rate above 23.2% in the big leagues but has a decent 3.43 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with a save in 42 innings so far this year in a swing role.

Ryne Nelson Earns Win Monday, Will Make Another Start

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson pitched well in his third start of the season, earning a win in Monday's 5-0 game against the Pirates. Nelson pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Nelson had been pitching out of the bullpen, but his last two appearances have been starts. Manager Terry Lovullo said that Nelson will make his next start on Sunday, so his recent performances have not gone unnoticed. The 27-year-old is now 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and an 8.05 K/9 rate in 38 IP. Nelson has shown signs of fantasy life throughout his career but has never consistently produced. His next start will be a decent matchup against the Nationals, so there's a chance he can extend his strong start streak.

Ryne Nelson Returns From Injured List

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson (shoulder) was activated off the 15-day IL, according to Alex Weiner of KTAR News. Nelson was placed on the IL on September 14 and will return to action quite quickly. However, seeing that Nelson only logged bullpen sessions while he was sidelined suggests he may be deployed in a long relief role down the stretch. Through 147 2/3 innings this summer, the 26-year-old posted a 4.33 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with a 34:125 BB:K ratio. Under the hood, the Oregon State product held a below-average 41.2% hard-hit rate but showed excellent command with a 5.5% BB rate. Fantasy managers should not consider putting Nelson in their lineup over the final series, as he will likely serve as a long relief option.

D-Backs Hopeful Ryne Nelson Will Return Soon

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (shoulder) threw 16 pitches in an abbreviated bullpen session on Sept. 21 and threw 28 pitches in a similar session on Tuesday. Nelson experienced shoulder discomfort during a throwing session on Sept. 14 and was put on the 15-day injured list. The Diamondbacks are hopeful that he will be ready to return when his IL stint is up, which would allow him to be a part of the playoff roster if the team secures a wild-card spot in the National League. Manager Torey Lovullo said the team is undecided on whether Nelson could return to the starting rotation or be used as a multi-inning reliever in the short-term. The 26-year-old will likely be used in relief whenever he returns. Entering play on Wednesday, Arizona is in the final wild-card spot in the NL but is only up by half a game over the Atlanta Braves.

Ryne Nelson To Throw Bullpen Session On Tuesday

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (shoulder) will throw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. If Nelson's bullpen goes well on Tuesday, it sounds like he could make his return this weekend for the final regular-season series at Chase Field against the division-rival San Diego Padres. Lovullo said that whether Nelson returns as a starter or reliever depends on what pitch count the team feels he can safely reach. At this point in the year with less than a week until the postseason, it's likely that the 26-year-old will be brought back for a relief role if Arizona gets into the playoffs as a wild-card team in the National League. Nelson was put on the 15-day injured list on Sept. 14 with right-shoulder inflammation. He's been a back-end starter for Arizona with a career-best 5.5% walk rate, a 20.1% K rate and a 4.33 ERA in 27 outings (25 starts) in his third MLB season.

Ryne Nelson Hits 15-Day Injured List

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with right shoulder inflammation, according to Jesse Friedman of PHNX Sports. The 26-year-old has been in a bit of a slump across his past four starts, which may have been due to this injury. In his most recent outing, the right-hander allowed five runs, which was the most he has given up in a start since June. Prior to this rough stretch, Nelson held a stellar 2.73 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP from July 2 to August 16. While Nelson could still return before the end of the regular season, the Diamondbacks may opt to give him additional rest as they currently hold a wild card spot. As a result, fantasy managers should expect southpaw Jordan Montgomery or prospect Yilber Diaz to claim the open spot in the rotation.

Ryne Nelson Getting Starting Nod

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson will get the starting nod against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Manager Torey Lovullo said earlier in the week that Nelson would be available out of the bullpen. The D-Backs didn't use him out of the pen which made him available to pitch in this game. Nelson allowed two earned runs while striking out nine batters over 7 1/3 innings of work during his latest start. He'll be a decent streaming option on Friday, but Nelson is likely headed to the bullpen after this start. Lovullo said the team plans to go down to a five-man rotation which probably means Nelson is the odd man out.

Ryne Nelson Fans Career-High Nine Batters At Wrigley, Picks Up Win On Friday

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson was dominant on Friday as he struck out nine batters in Arizona's 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Nine strikeouts marks a career high for Nelson, who picked up the win and improved his record to 7-6 on the season. The career day was a great sight to see for the 26-year-old, whose rocky start to the season has turned around over his last four games. Nelson's ERA now sits at 4.78 on the season, which was all the way up to 7.06 in the middle of May. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues looking for help in the starting pitching department may want to take a look at Nelson. His next scheduled start will be a tough one on Wednesday when Arizona travels to Kansas City to face the Royals.

Ryne Nelson Looks Sharp On Sunday

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson was surprisingly solid during Sunday's outing against the San Diego Padres. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings in the win. It hasn't been a great year for Nelson but he has looked better lately. He struck out five batters while only walking one batter on Sunday. This in now back-to-back strong outings for Nelson against fairly good offenses. We'll see if he can keep it going against the Toronto Blue Jays during his next start.
