Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wide receiver Sammy Watkins are already showing a real strong connection in offseason practices. Wideout Chris Conley said Watkins has picked up the offense "as fast as anyone I've ever seen." Mahomes' strong arm should mesh well with Watkins' deep-ball prowess, but we'll see what happens when the real games start. There is a lot to like in this KC offense, but there are other mouths to feed like All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, last year's leading rusher in Kareem Hunt and home run threat Tyreek Hill, so Watkins may continue to be inconsistent for fantasy owners. He's better off being owned in standard-scoring leagues.
Free-agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins will sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Watkins will sign a three-year, $48 million deal with Kansas City when the free-agent market opens on Wednesday. He will combine with Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce as receiving threats for new Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the second-year quarterback looks to make an impact. Watkins was linked with the Packers, Bears, Jaguars and a return to the Rams, but he will join the AFC West champions in 2018. He caught 39 of his 70 targets for the Rams, totaling 593 yards, but did have eight touchdown catches for Los Angeles. While he only has 1,023 yards over the last two seasons, the 24-year-old Watkins (the fourth pick of the 2014 draft) had 2,029 yards in his first two seasons with the Bills.
On Monday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network speculated that Green Bay will be one of the teams that will show interest in free-agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Rapoport also mentioned Chicago, Jacksonville or a return to the Los Angeles Rams as possible destinations for Watkins. Buffalo made a big trade to move up and select Watkins in the 2014 draft. They traded him to Los Angeles in 2017. Watkins has looked brilliant at times but has consistently been plagued by foot injuries that have seemingly prevented him from living up to the draft hype. Still, Green Bay is badly in need of a deep threat of Watkins' caliber and signing him would give quarterback Aaron Rodgers the most physically talented wide receiver of his career. A Watkins signing in Green Bay would dramatically raise Watkins' stock and would greatly improve Green Bay's offense for 2018.
