Ahkello Witherspoon Back With Rams On One-Year Deal
The Los Angeles Rams re-signed veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a one-year contract on Wednesday, the team announced on X. The 2017 third-round pick out of Colorado has appeared in 30 games for Los Angeles over the last two seasons following two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and four years with the San Francisco 49ers. Overall, Witherspoon has collected 235 tackles (198 solo), 12 interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and 58 pass deflections in 90 career games. The 29-year-old will continue to be a veteran contributor on a young Los Angeles defense in 2025.
Ahkello Witherspoon Questionable For Divisional Round
Los Angeles Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (thigh) and nose tackle Bobby Brown III (shoulder) are both listed as questionable to suit up on Sunday in Philadelphia against the Eagles in the Divisional Round of the postseason. Despite the questionable tags, head coach Sean McVay said he expects both Witherspoon and Brown to be available to play this weekend. Witherspoon is up in the air after injuring his thigh in Monday night's wild-card win over the Minnesota Vikings. The 29-year-old defensive back was a DNP on Wednesday but was limited in practice on Thursday and Friday. Witherspoon's presence will be good news for a Rams secondary that will be trying to slow down receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Despite not practicing all week, Brown should be available as well after injuring his shoulder on Monday against Minnesota.
Ahkello Witherspoon Not Spotted At Wednesday's Practice
Los Angeles Rams defensive back Ahkello Witherspoon (thigh) was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's team practice. Witherspoon notched three tackles -- including a sack and TFL -- in Monday night's 27-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings but injured his thigh in the third quarter and did not return to the contest. While it's unfortunate that he was tagged with a DNP to kick off the week, he'll still have a few more shots to elevate his practice participation ahead of Sunday's road tilt with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 29-year-old tied for the team lead with nine pass breakups during the regular season and ranked third amongst cornerbacks in snaps played. If he can't suit up, fellow DBs Josh Wallace and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. project to pick up some extra playing time in the Rams' defensive backfield.
Free-agent cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon signed an undisclosed deal with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, according to a source. Witherspoon is a big corner at 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, but he's been very productive in his career. In 13 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last two years, he's recorded 31 solo tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defensed. The 28-year-old was released last month after playing in just four games in 2022 due to a hamstring injury. He's expected to be ready to go for training camp this summer, though, and the veteran will compete for a depth role in the Rams' secondary.
The Pittsburgh Steelers informed veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon that he'll be released, according to a source. Witherspoon started seven games for the Steelers over the last two seasons. He appeared in only four games last year and missed the final nine games due to a hamstring injury. The 28-year-old defensive back finished the 2022 campaign with only 20 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. The former third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 played the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Niners before joining Pittsburgh. Witherspoon will now look for another job on the open market this offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are re-signing cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a two-year deal. The 26-year-old spent the first four years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers before a trade sent him to Pittsburgh last year. He played in nine games for the Steelers in 2021 and compiled 15 total tackles and three interceptions. He's currently slated to be one of the team's nickelback options beside starting outside corners Justin Layne and Levi Wallace.
The Pittsburgh Steelers defense received a boost Friday when they swung a deal with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Witherspoon had inked a one-year deal worth $4 million with Seattle in free agency, but ultimately will not suit up for the franchise after four years spent as a division rival with the 49ers. Witherspoon appeared in 47 games (33 starts) during his time with San Francisco. His addition further strengthens the Pittsburgh secondary, with Joe Haden and Cameron Sutton likely to hold down primary duties out wide. Currently coming off the board as a top-3 defense in most fantasy drafts, the addition of Witherspoon does not nothing but boost Pittsburgh's stock further.
Seahawks Sign Ahkello Witherspoon To One-Year Deal
The Seattle Seahawks signed free-agent cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, to an undisclosed one-year deal on Tuesday. Witherspoon was benched in favor of Emmanuel Moseley to finish the 2019 season in San Francisco, but he re-entered the starting lineup for the final three games of 2020 and played well. Witherspoon will join D.J. Reed, who Seattle claimed off waivers from the 49ers last season. The soon-to-be 26-year-old was a third-round pick by the 49ers out of Colorado in 2017, and he was mostly a disappointment in his four seasons with the team. In 47 career games (33 starts), Witherspoon has 117 combined tackles (99 solo), four interceptions (one for a touchdown), 24 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (head) suffered a concussion in Week 1 against the Cardinals and is in the league's concussion protocol, according to a league source. When he's good to go he'll take over for Richard Sherman (calf), who was placed on Injured Reserve on Wednesday. The Niners are suddenly thin in the secondary, but it might not matter much in Week 2 against a Jets offense that is already reeling and just lost running back Le'Veon Bell (hamstring) for at least three weeks. Witherspoon had a solo tackle in the Week 1 loss and managed 28 combined tackles, an interception returned for a touchdown and nine passes defensed in 10 games (eight starts) in 2019.
49ers Defense Loses Ahkello Witherspoon For A Month
San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (foot) is expected to miss at least a month with a foot sprain, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Emmanuel Moseley will be first in line to replace Witherspoon, but a competition with Jason Verrett and others will take place. San Francisco's secondary will need to step up. Luckily they'll have a Week 4 bye to figure things out before being tested by Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. on Monday night in Week 5. The Browns could have their way with San Fran's secondary in that matchup.
