Free-agent cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon signed an undisclosed deal with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, according to a source. Witherspoon is a big corner at 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, but he's been very productive in his career. In 13 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last two years, he's recorded 31 solo tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defensed. The 28-year-old was released last month after playing in just four games in 2022 due to a hamstring injury. He's expected to be ready to go for training camp this summer, though, and the veteran will compete for a depth role in the Rams' secondary.

Witherspoon will join D.J. Reed, who Seattle claimed off waivers from the 49ers last season. The soon-to-be 26-year-old was a third-round pick by the 49ers out of Colorado in 2017, and he was mostly a disappointment in his four seasons with the team. In 47 career games (33 starts), Witherspoon has 117 combined tackles (99 solo), four interceptions (one for a touchdown), 24 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Emmanuel Moseley will be first in line to replace Witherspoon, but a competition with Jason Verrett and others will take place. San Francisco's secondary will need to step up. Luckily they'll have a Week 4 bye to figure things out before being tested by Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. on Monday night in Week 5. The Browns could have their way with San Fran's secondary in that matchup.
