Dan Quinn News
Atlanta Falcons owner and chairman Arthur M. Blank announced that head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff will be retained into the 2020 season. Additionally, Raheem Morris has been named the defensive coordinator, effective at the end of the 2019 season. Since moving back to defensive duties midway through this season, the Falcons Defense went from 31st in the league in scoring defense to the top 10 in most statistical categories. After a rough start, Atlanta is now 6-9 and in third place in the NFC South behind the Saints and Buccaneers. If the team's defense can maintain their improvements into 2020, the Falcons could return to contention very quickly.
Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn will take over the defensive-coordinator duties in 2019 after the team fired defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel this week. Quinn also took over play-calling duties on defense in the final quarter of the 2016 season when the Falcons made their Super Bowl run. Atlanta's D was ravaged by injuries to key playmakers early in the year and they never recovered, finishing 28th in yards allowed per game (384.5), 27th in passing yards allowed per game (259.6), 25th in rushing yards allowed per game (124.9) and 25th in points allowed per game (26.4). They should be able to rebound substantially in 2019 with better health.
The Atlanta Falcons fired offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel and special teams coach Keith Armstrong on Monday, according to sources. The Falcons were a huge disappointment on both sides of the ball in 2018. The issues on defense were mainly due to key injuries early in the season. The offense underachieved under Sarkisian in his two seasons, although they ranked sixth in yards per game (389.1), fourth in passing yards per game (290.8) and 10th in points per game (25.9) in 2018. With all the talent on both sides of the ball, Atlanta could easily bounce back and be a playoff contender in 2019.
