Ron Rivera News
The Washington Redskins are making former Panthers coach Ron Rivera their new head coach by giving him a five-year deal, according to sources. The deal is expected to become official when the Redskins announce it on Wednesday. Rivera was one of the most coveted coaches around the league when he was let go by the Panthers this year, and it's a bit surprising that someone of his stature would go to a team that is in need of a rebuild. But Washington has a young quarterback in place (Dwayne Haskins) that Rivera can help mold, and also two impressive young receivers in Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims Jr. Rivera's biggest contribution, though, may be in rebuilding Washington's defense.
The Washington Redskins are expected to hire former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera as their next head coach, and he will interview with the team on Monday. Rivera was fired by Carolina this year after a disappointing season. In his nine years as the Panthers head man, Rivera went 76-63-1, including going 3-4 in the postseason and a Super Bowl appearance. If Washington indeed hires him on Monday, Rivera's presence in D.C. will be a huge upgrade over Jay Gruden and Bill Callahan. Rivera's biggest task will be to help quarterback Dwayne Haskins take the next step in Year 2. Rivera and the front office will need to give Haskins more help besides receivers Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims Jr., who will also be heading into their second seasons.
The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Ron Rivera on Tuesday. The final straw for ownership was the Panthers getting upset at home by the Redskins in Week 13. Carolina currently sits in third place in the NFC South with a 5-7 record. Their loss this last Sunday was their fourth in a row and dropped them to a disappointing 2-4 record at home this year. In his nine seasons as the Panthers head coach, Rivera finishes with an overall record of 76-63-1. The entire coaching staff was fighting an uphill battle this year with Cam Newton missing most of the season and backup Kyle Allen proving to be nothing more than a game manager. With Rivera out of the mix, expect this offense to continue running through running back Christian McCaffrey. Secondary coach Perry Fewell will take over as the interim head coach for the final four games.
