Vance Joseph News
The Arizona Cardinals hired former Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph as their next defensive coordinator on Friday. He went 11-21 in his two seasons as the top man in Denver but spent 11 years coaching defensive backs with the 49ers, Texans and Bengals before serving as the Dolphins defensive coordinator in 2016. The defense will be switching back to a 3-4 scheme under Joseph in 2019, according to general manager Steve Keim. Under Joseph, the Broncos had the seventh highest blitz rate in the league at 31.5 percent, so the Cardinals should be aggressive moving forward on that side of the ball.
The Denver Broncos fired head coach Vance Joseph on Monday after their first back-to-back losing seasons since the early-70s, according to a source. Joseph spent only two years with Denver despite signing a four-year deal in 2017, and the Broncos went 5-11 in his first year and 6-10 in 2018. The Broncos were competitive against good teams this year, but ultimately the quarterback position did Joseph in the last two years, as well as a declining defense in 2018. Rookie running backs Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman as well as receiver Courtland Sutton are reasons for optimism in the long term, but until the Broncos figure out the QB position, this is a team that could continue to struggle in 2019. The health of Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles) is also in question for next year.
Denver Broncos general manager John Elway isn't ready to fire head coach Vance Joseph and told reporters last week he'd seen enough "good things" during the first half of the season to remain confident. At this point, were going to stay the course, Elway said during his weekly appearance on Orange & Blue 760, a Broncos broadcast partner. Im much more encouraged this year than last year because guys are still playing hard and (we) are in the games. Denver lost to the Texans in Week 9 to fall to 3-6 on the season as they head into their bye week. They've lost four games by seven or fewer points, tied with the Eagles for second most in the NFL behind the Giants. The Broncos will likely need to be better in the second half of the season for Joseph to retain his job heading into the offseason, though. It'll be tougher now that Demaryius Thomas is no longer with the team.
