Arturs Silovs Frustrates Flyers With 19-Save Shutout

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs enjoyed a perfect night at the office in Wednesday's season opener against the Philadelphia Flyers, skating away with a 19-save shutout in a 7-0 road victory. Incredibly, Silovs opened the season with a shutout for the second straight year. Last season, he stopped 25 pucks in a 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers. The Latvian became only the fifth goaltender in league history to record season-opening shutouts in back-to-back years. It's an impressive feat for Silovs, but with the talented Sergei Murashov waiting in the wings, he will need more than a few good outings to cement his spot as Pittsburgh's No. 1.

The Latvian native became the third goaltender in Penguins history to record each of his first two playoff wins with the team in elimination games. Pittsburgh's decision to replace Stuart Skinner with Silovs has shifted the momentum in the matchup, leaving Dan Muse's team now only one win away from tying the series. Silovs has posted a .920 save percentage against Philadelphia, a significant improvement over Skinner's .873.

Arturs Silovs Steps in and Saves Pittsburgh on Saturday

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs was asked to start an elimination game. All the Penguins goaltender did was make 28 saves on 30 shots in a 4-2 win. Pittsburgh will now play on Monday at home and have a little life in the Battle of Pennsylvania. Silovs made several key saves while Pittsburgh was short-handed. Dan Muse said it best: "When his name was called, he was ready. Great by him." The goaltender is the last line of defense on the penalty kill and even short-handed. Silovs stopped all seven shots in those situations. The Latvian goaltender had not played in 11 days but came through in the clutch on Saturday night.

Arturs Silovs Expected To Be Fine For Training Camp

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs (knee) is expected to be good to go for the start of training camp. Silovs pulled out from Latvia's Olympic qualifying tournament last week due to knee inflammation. However, Team Latvia general manager Rudolfs Kalvinitis believes Silovs will be fine for the Canucks camp, which opens on Sept. 19. The Canucks are already without Thatcher Demko (knee), who's set to miss the preseason, so the team can breathe a sigh of relief knowing Silovs isn't dealing with anything serious. Silovs has a 6-2-1 career regular-season record in the NHL and went 5-5 in last year's playoffs while filling in for Demko.

He has been solid in his two postseason contests, turning aside 47 of the 52 shots he has faced (.904 save percentage) and has gone 1-1-0 in that time. He appeared in just four regular-season contests for the Canucks, putting forth a 2.47 goals-against average and an .881 Sv% but managed to go 3-0-1 in the process. Arturs Silovs Set For NHL Debut

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs will make his NHL debut Wednesday versus the Rangers. The 21-year-old Latvian is getting a look in the big league after impressing in the AHL with a 21-9-4 record and three shutouts. He has allowed 2.48 goals per game with a .906 save percentage. The Canucks have struggled badly on the defensive end all season, so Silovs can expect to have a busy debut. Especially against a team like the Rangers, who are full of firepower and average 3.32 goals per game.
