Cubs Have Renewed Interest in Alex Bregman

The Chicago Cubs have shown renewed interest in All-Star free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman this offseason after a failed bid to sign him last spring training, according to Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. Pitching is the Cubs' primary focus this winter, but they are also looking to add a bat, with All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker fully expected to depart in free agency. Chicago's ownership group authorized president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer to make Bregman a four-year, $115 million offer last year that included opt-out clauses after the second and third seasons. The 31-year-old veteran ultimately signed with Boston for three years and $120 million and opted out after 2025 following a 3.5 WAR season. Bregman, who still plays Gold Glove defense, is the type of two-way player the Cubs have repeatedly targeted. Bregman rebounded in 2025 after a career-worst .768 OPS in 2024, but he hit just 18 homers, and durability is a concern as he enters his age-32 season. Despite the obvious concerns for a player his age, Bregman still has some upside if he's playing in Chicago or Boston in 2026.

Red Sox Going for Either Alex Bregman or Pete Alonso?

MLB Network's Jon Morosi says that he thinks the Boston Red Sox will "either bring back Alex Bregman" or "make an all-out pursuit of Pete Alonso." Morosi likes Boston's "chances to get one or the other." "I believe the Red Sox are the strongest contender of anyone to take Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets," Morosi added. The BoSox will be on the market for a starting pitcher this winter, too, but Morosi thinks it will be a big priority to try and bring Bregman back after his strong season in 2025 in Beantown. In 114 games last year, Bregman hit .273 with 18 homers, 62 RBI, an .821 OPS, and a 3.5 WAR, while Alonso hit .272 with 38 bombs, 126 RBI, an .871 OPS, and a 3.4 WAR in 162 games. Alonso has the clear edge in the power department, but Bregman is more versatile on defense and is still an above-average defender at third base. Both players opted out of their deals with their respective teams following the World Series, and both share the same agent in Scott Boras.

Alex Bregman Opts Out of his Contract With Boston

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the team and is now a free agent, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. Bregman had player options with the Red Sox for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons that would have combined to pay him $40 million, but he will now look for a multi-year deal on the open market. Returning to Beantown might be Bregman's best bet when all is said and done, though. The 31-year-old will hope to get one final long-term deal to take him through the end of his career after having a fine first season with the BoSox, in which he hit .273/.360/.462 with an .821 OPS, 18 home runs, 62 RBI, and 64 runs scored in 114 regular-season games. He was an All-Star for the third time in his career, but Bregman also missed time due to injuries and is no longer a lock to hit 20 home runs in a season.

Alex Bregman Plans to Opt Out of Contract With Red Sox

Veteran third baseman Alex Bregman will opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox this winter, according to sources. While a return to Boston would be a logical fit in 2026, Bregman could have an extra suitor or two after a strong season in Beantown in 2025, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Bregman had a career-best 44.4% hard-hit rate with the BoSox while slashing .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 114 games played. He missed time with a quadriceps injury, though, and wasn't the same hitter after returning in the second half. At Bregman's age, injuries are going to remain a concern going forward, but his batted-ball skills and plate discipline have aged nicely. After another strong season, the three-time All-Star should be able to score a multi-year deal in free agency if he indeed opts out of his current deal after the World Series ends.

Alex Bregman Should be Good for Game 1 of Wild-Card Series

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (illness) "should be good to go" for Game 1 of the wild-card series on Tuesday in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees, according to chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. Bregman has been sick and away from the team for most of the past two dayshe'sut h's apparently feeling better and will be ready for the start of the playoffs. He traveled separately from the team to New York and was on the field for a workout at Yankee Stadium on Monday, according to Tim Healey of Newsday. The 31-year-old hit just .216 in September to close out the regular season, so Boston will be hoping he can turn things around now that they are in the postseason. In his career against Fried, he's gone 5-for-9 with a home run and two RBI in 12 plate appearances. Against lefties this year, Bregman hit a strong .319 (36-for-113), but with only three of his 18 home runs.

Alex Bregman Scratched on Wednesday

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will sit out Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins. Bregman was in Boston's original lineup, but Abraham Toro will instead handle third base and hit second versus right-hander Zebby Matthews. With the Red Sox off Thursday, Bregman will now get back-to-back days to rest. The Red Sox have taken it easy with the 31-year-old since he returned July 11 from a month-plus stay on the IL with a quad injury. Bregman has gone 14-for-48 with three home runs and nine RBI in his first 13 games back to continue another productive season. He's slashing an outstanding .298/.371/.551 with 14 homers, 44 RBI, and 39 runs scored over 275 plate appearances.

Alex Bregman Still Dealing with Quad Injury

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (quad) returned on July 11 from a quad strain that caused him to miss 43 games. However, he's playing at less than full strength, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Cotillo notes that the team has instructed Bregman to pick his spots to run the bases at full speed, prioritizing his presence in the lineup over all-out hustle. In 22 plate appearances since returning from the injury, Bregman is hitting .227 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. In 248 total plate appearances this season, the 31-year-old Bregman is hitting .292/.371/.539 with 12 home runs, 38 RBI, and 34 runs scored. Since speed was not a huge part of his profile to begin with, Bregman's injury limitations should not impact his fantasy outlook significantly. However, he may suffer a bit in runs scored, and he could be at an elevated risk of re-injury.

Alex Bregman to Play Four of Six Games on Road Trip

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that third baseman Alex Bregman, who returned from the injured list last Friday after missing 43 games with a right-quadriceps strain, will play four of the six games on the team's road trip coming out of the All-Star break. Bregman started in Friday's series opener against the Chicago Cubs on Friday and went 1-for-4. He will also play on Saturday at Wrigley Field before taking Sunday's series finale off. Cora said the plan is for Bregman to play Monday and Tuesday in Philadelphia against the Phillies and then receive Wednesday off. "He's in a good spot," Cora said. "He was able to bounce back from that series (last weekend vs. Tampa). He felt good on Monday." In his three games since coming off the IL, Bregman has gone 3-for-12 with a double and a strikeout. He'll be facing off against Cubs lefty Shota Imanaga on Saturday.

Alex Bregman Officially Activated and Starting on Friday

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (quadriceps) was officially activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday and is starting at third and batting second at Fenway Park against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Drew Rasmussen. Rookie Marcelo Mayer will move over to second base and will hit seventh. Bregman is back in action for the first time since suffering a strained quad muscle in late May, and he should be returned to fantasy lineups immediately. The Red Sox will ease him back into the fold this weekend and give him the day off on Saturday before he returns on Sunday to close out the first half of the season. The 31-year-old two-time All-Star was one of the team's most consistent hitters before his injury, and he's also batting .273 with a home run and three RBI in 11 career at-bats against Rasmussen.

Alex Bregman Expected to Return on Friday

Mass Live's Chris Cotillo expects Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (quadriceps) to come off the 10-day injured list to rejoin the team before Friday's game at Fenway Park against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays. Bregman should be in the starting lineup on Friday against Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen after missing 43 games with a strained right quad muscle that he suffered on May 23. With the team sending David Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, it appears that rookie Marcelo Mayer will now occupy second base with Bregman returning. However, Romy Gonzalez, who has started five of the last six games at the keystone, will likely also be in the mix. The 31-year-old Bregman will be Boston's everyday third baseman again, but he'll be rested on Saturday before playing on Sunday in the final game of the first half of the season.
