Alex Clemmey Headed for Double-A Harrisburg

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Alex Clemmey is getting promoted to Double-A Harrisburg after a strong showing at High-A Wilmington. The Nationals' fifth-ranked prospect posted a 2.47 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and tallied the second-most strikeouts in the South Atlantic League with 113 in 87 1/3 innings pitched. The southpaw's arsenal includes a mid-90s fastball, a low-80s slider, and a changeup, which generates a high strikeout rate (30.0 percent) but comes with a high walk rate (15.9 percent) that will need to improve as he climbs the ranks. He's only 20 years old and boasts a 6-foot-6 build that could help add velocity down the road, so he's a name to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues.

Alex Clemmey Extends Shutout Streak on Sunday

Washington Nationals left-handed pitching prospect Alex Clemmey extended his shutout streak on Sunday against High-A Hudson Valley. In this outing, the No. 5-ranked prospect in the system tossed five shutout frames with three hits and five walks. He struck out nine. In his previous outing, the southpaw tossed six shutout frames with four hits, two walks, and nine punchouts. Throughout his first taste of High-A, the 19-year-old has flashed elite strikeout upside and currently sits at the top of the strikeout leaderboard in the South Atlantic League. Through 45 2/3 frames, Clemmey has struck out 67 batters but has shown weak command, serving up 38 free passes. If Clemmey continues to lower his walk rate, he could be in the mix to earn a taste of Double-A late in the season.

Alex Clemmey Fans 10 In Second High-A Start

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Alex Clemmey fanned 10 batters across five shutout innings on Thursday evening. He allowed just one hit and two free passes. This was Clemmey's second start at this level, and he has already begun to take significant steps forward. In his first start of the campaign with High-A, Clemmey allowed two runs across three innings of work. In this outing, he struck out just six batters. The 19-year-old was the headline piece acquired by the Nationals in the deal that sent Lane Thomas to Cleveland last season. The southpaw spent the entire 2024 campaign at the Low-A level and held a 4.58 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP across 92 1/3 innings of work. He tallied an impressive 123 strikeouts but served up a high 63 walks. Fantasy managers should expect him to spend most of the season at High-A.

Alex Clemmey Headlines Prospects Acquired By Nationals

The Washington Nationals acquired left-handed pitching prospect Alex Clemmey, shortstop Rafael Ramirez and third baseman Jose Tena on Monday from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for outfielder Lane Thomas, according to a source. Per MLB Pipeline, Clemmey (No. 8) and Ramirez (No. 22) were among Cleveland's top-30 prospects. Clemmey is only 19 years of age and was taken in the second round last year out of high school. He's gone 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in his first 19 professional starts at Single-A Lynchburg this year but does have 97 strikeouts in only 69 1/3 innings. Clemmey is a work in progress but is a high-end lefty arm now in Washington's farm system. He's at least several years from a potential big-league debut. Ramirez has hit just .182 with four home runs, 23 RBI and seven steals in 55 games in 2024 for Lynchburg.

Alex Clemmey Continues To Improve At Single-A

Cleveland Guardians pitching prospect Alex Clemmey put together another strong outing for Single-A Lynchburg on Wednesday. The left-hander tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed three hits, zero runs, zero walks and recorded eight strikeouts on the evening. Clemmey was drafted in the second round of the 2023 draft and got off to a rough start in his debut season, but he has thrown to an impressive 1.93 ERA over his last four starts and continues to trend up. MLB Pipeline has Clenney as the Guardians No. 8 prospect and the 18-year-old should be in good hands as the Guardians have been one of the best franchises in terms of developing pitchers over the past decade. As it stands, Clemmey is years away from a potential debut and only a name for dynasty managers to file away for now.
