Bo Bichette Off to a Slow Start in Queens, Hears Boos on Opening Weekend

New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette didn't take long to hear the boo-birds coming his way during his opening weekend with his new team, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. It wasn't all bad for Bichette in the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he did strike out multiple times per game and carries an early 53.3% strikeout rate in 15 plate appearances. Bichette acknowledged that he's feeling the pressure after signing a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets in the offseason. To begin the 2026 season, he went 1-for-14 with an RBI, run scored, and eight strikeouts. "We can talk about it being early, but I need to figure some things out," Bichette said. "I've done it before. Just different circumstances." Fantasy managers shouldn't be overly concerned just yet, especially since Bichette is also transitioning on defense from the move from shortstop to the hot corner in Queens.

Bo Bichette Finding his Groove Just in Time to Start the Season?

New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette hit his first home run of spring training on Tuesday in the Grapefruit League game against the Miami Marlins, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and five RBI. The 28-year-old two-time All-Star is starting to get a little more comfortable at the plate and at defense at the hot corner for the Mets with a week to go until Opening Day. Bichette came into Thursday's spring action hitting .267 (8-for-30) with a homer, eight RBI, four runs scored, four walks, and five strikeouts in 12 games played. He bounced back from an injury-plagued 2024 campaign to slash .311/.357/.483 with an .840 OPS, 18 home runs, 94 RBI, 78 runs scored, and four steals in 139 regular-season games in 2025 in his final year in Toronto. Bichette should give fantasy managers a high floor with his strong contact skills, midrange power, and reliable counting stats in another strong lineup in Queens. He'll also provide shortstop eligibility to begin the year for fantasy managers. Bichette doesn't have the elite power/speed profile of the high-end fantasy shortstops, which is why he's more of a midrange fantasy target at shortstop/third base.

Bo Bichette Batting Third in Mets Spring Training Debut

New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette is starting at third base and batting third in the team's Grapefruit League opener on Saturday against the division-rival Miami Marlins, according to Max Goodman of NJ.com. Despite the injury to Francisco Lindor (hand) that could keep him sidelined to start the 2026 season, the Mets will keep Bichette at the hot corner. The 27-year-old former second-rounder in 2016 had an injury-plagued year for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024 but bounced back nicely and led them to the World Series last season, slashing .311/.357/.483 with an .840 OPS, 18 home runs, 94 RBI, 78 runs scored, and four stolen bases in 139 regular-season games (628 plate appearances). The move to Queens should be good for his run production near the top of a strong lineup, and as long as he stays healthy, he should provide around 20 long balls. Adding third base eligibility will help, too. RotoBaller has Bichette ranked as the No. 14 fantasy shortstop to begin 2026.

Bo Bichette Won't Take Reps at Shortstop After Teammate's Injury

The New York Mets signed Bo Bichette this offseason to play third base, and The Athletic's Will Sammon writes that he "won't be taking reps at shortstop" following Francisco Lindor's surgery on the hamate bone in his hand. However, Sammon adds that it could change if Lindor's timetable changes. Early this spring with Lindor sidelined, infielders Vidal Brujan, Grae Kessinger, Jackson Cluff, and Ronny Mauricio will take spring training reps at the 6. The Mets are hoping that Lindor won't miss time, if any, to begin the 2026 regular season, so they'll keep Bichette locked in at the hot corner. The 27-year-old needs all the reps he can get at third, since he's never played the position professionally. Bichette rebounded nicely from an injury-plagued 2024 campaign to hit .311/.357/.483 with an .840 OPS, 18 homers, and 94 RBI in 139 regular-season games last year. He should have a high ceiling for run production while hitting for a high average and producing around 20 homers, and he'll have dual-position eligibility in 2026.

Mets Expect Bo Bichette to Bat Third, Jorge Polanco Fourth

New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco will likely bat third and fourth, respectively. Presumably, that alignment is contingent on Francisco Lindor (hand) being ready for opening day. Bichette was the Mets' biggest addition of the offseason. The former Blue Jays shortstop will likely shift to third base in New York when Lindor is healthy. He's a dependable contributor with the bat in his hands, slashing .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 134 wRC+ across 139 games in 2025. Polanco is also a new addition for the Mets after inking a free agent contract in December. He spent the last two years in Seattle, primarily slotting in as the Mariners' second baseman or designated hitter. He slashed .265/.326/.495 with 26 home runs and 132 wRC+ last season. He typically led off for the Mariners, but he did make 21 cleanup appearances with a suboptimal .615 OPS in the fourth slot.

Bo Bichette Won't Play in World Baseball Classic

New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette has decided not to participate in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Bichette was going to play for Brazil, but has decided to back out of the tourney. Instead, Bichette wants to focus on preparing for the upcoming 2026 season with his new team. The 27-year-old has represented Brazil in the past, and is eligible to do so because his mother was born in Brazil. Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets during the offseason. It's understandable that he doesn't want to risk an injury and will shift his focus to helping the Mets win this season.

Bo Bichette in Line to Rack Up Counting Stats in 2026

After spending the first seven years of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, infielder Bo Bichette will suit up in 2026 for the New York Mets. The soon-to-be 28-year-old inked a three-year $126 million contract with New York that will see him move from shortstop to third base. Bichette had an excellent year with Toronto in 2025, posting a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 18 home runs, 94 RBI, 78 runs scored, and four stolen bases across 628 plate appearances. While Bichette had a strong lineup around him with the Blue Jays, there's an argument to be made that he's in a better position to rack up counting stats with the Mets. Bichette will likely hit at the top of the lineup alongside outfielder Juan Soto and shortstop Francisco Lindor, both of whom topped 200 combined runs and RBI in 2025. If there's a reason for concern with Bichette, it may be the adjustment period that could come with learning a new position. However, he will gain multi-position eligibility early in the season, which only boosts his 2026 fantasy value.

Losing Out on Bo Bichette was a "Gut Punch" for Phillies

Losing out on free-agent infielder Bo Bichette -- he eventually signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the division-rival New York Mets -- was a "gut punch" for the Philadelphia Phillies, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies thought they "were very close to having a deal done" and were willing to rearrange their roster in a significant way to accommodate Bichette. The Phillies actually called catcher J.T. Realmuto's agent to tell him the team was going in another direction. Philly offered Bichette a seven-year deal in the range of $190 million to $200 million. After re-signing Realmuto for three years and $45 million, the Phillies are not expected to pursue any other multi-year deals with free agents. In New York, Bichette is expected to play third base, a position he has never played before.

Bo Bichette Turned Down Seven-Year Contract Offer from Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies offered infielder Bo Bichette a seven-year, $200 million contract before he signed with the New York Mets, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Bichette's reported agreement with New York is worth $126 million over three years, so the 27-year-old is apparently prioritizing a higher average annual value and the chance to get back on the open market more quickly. Nightengale reports that the Phillies "believed they would sign (Bichette) until the Mets swooped in." Bichette has almost exclusively played shortstop as a big leaguer, but he's set to move to third base with the Mets and likely would have done the same in Philadelphia. With Bichette now in New York, Philadelphia's opening day third baseman currently projects to be Alec Bohm. Bohm posted a .287/.331/.409 slash line with 11 home runs, 59 RBI, 53 runs scored, and two stolen bases across 504 plate appearances with the Phillies in 2025.

Bo Bichette Agrees to Three-Year Contract With Mets

Free-agent infielder Bo Bichette has agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with the New York Mets, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. While the Mets were not one of the teams most frequently linked to Bichette throughout the offseason, Passan notes that New York pivoted to Bichette after losing out on outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Across 628 plate appearances with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025, Bichette posted a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 18 home runs, 94 RBI, 78 runs scored, and four stolen bases. He turns just 28 in March, so the shorter-term, high-AAV contract structure will allow Bichette another shot at free agency as he enters his age-31 season. While Bichette has almost exclusively played shortstop in his big-league career to this point, he seems likely to move to third base in New York with Francisco Lindor locked in at short. Mets infielders Mark Vientos and Brett Baty could both see a significant playing time reduction as a result of the team's acquisition of Bichette.
