Bowden Francis has Started a Throwing Progression

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (shoulder) has begun throwing while rehabbing at the team's Florida complex. It's unclear as to how far he has been able to throw, but it's good news nonetheless that he has progressed to this point. He plans on ramping up his distance thrown and pitch count, but he is still in the early stages of his recovery. The next step forward in his recovery would be completing moundwork. How quickly he progresses will be closely monitored, given that he suffered a setback with discomfort on July 18. Fantasy managers will want to keep him on the waiver wire in all redraft leagues because even if he does return, his role is largely unknown.

Bowden Francis Shut Down for at Least 10 Days

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (shoulder) will be shut down for the foreseeable future after experiencing shoulder discomfort while ramping up at the team's player development complex. He will be shut down for at least 10 days. Sidelined since June 15, the 29-year-old had been building himself back up with a planned bullpen session on July 8. Days after he completed the bullpen, he had reportedly suffered renewed soreness. The Jays believe extended time away from baseball activities will help the symptoms subside. Francis has gone (2-8) with a 6.05 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP this season. Fantasy managers in most leagues can move on from Francis as he's not expected to come back until mid-August at the earliest and is unlikely to rejoin Toronto's starting rotation even when he does return.

Bowden Francis to Throw Bullpen on Saturday

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. Francis is working back from a right-shoulder impingement that has sidelined him since June 15. Between the injury and his performance, this has been a rough season for Francis. The 29-year-old has made 14 starts for the Blue Jays and gone 2-8 with a 6.05 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, and 54:27 K:BB over 64 innings. Francis is without a clear timetable for a return, and barring injuries, it seems unlikely Toronto will reinsert him into its rotation when he comes back.

Bowden Francis Throws Side Session

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Bowden Francis (shoulder) threw a side session at the team's complex in Florida and is "doing alright," according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. Francis was placed on the 15-day injured list in mid-June with an impingement in his right shoulder. The 29-year-old had struggled in 64 innings (14 starts) before getting injured, posting a 2-8 record with a 6.05 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts. Given that veteran left-hander Eric Lauer has given the Blue Jays solid work in Francis' absence, Francis may not even have a rotation spot when he regains full health. Either way, he'll likely need at least a couple of rehab outings before he's able to return to the big-league mound.

Bowden Francis Receives Cortisone Shot

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (shoulder) received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder last week and was shut down from throwing through the weekend, according to MLB.com. Francis landed on the 15-day injured list last Tuesday with a right-shoulder impingement and is unlikely to return until after the mid-July All-Star break since he has yet to resume throwing. When the 29-year-old does return from the IL, he will be far from a lock to regain a starting-rotation role after going 2-8 with a 6.05 ERA (6.79 FIP) and 1.53 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and 27 walks in 64 innings over his 14 starts. Francis was pretty nasty late last year after adding a splitter to his arsenal, but it appears the rest of the league has figured him out somewhat through the first half in 2025.

Blue Jays Place Bowden Francis on 15-Day Injured List With Shoulder Impingement

The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Tuesday that they placed right-hander Bowden Francis (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder impingement and recalled right-hander Paxton Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. The team also selected the contract of left-hander Justin Bruihl from the minors and designated right-hander Erik Swanson for assignment. When Francis returns from the IL, there's no guarantee he'll be back in Toronto's starting rotation after struggling to the tune of a 6.05 ERA (6.79 FIP) and 1.53 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and 27 walks in 64 innings over his 14 starts. The 29-year-old leads the league with eight losses in his fourth year in the majors. Veteran right-hander Max Scherzer (thumb), who has only made one start in his first year in Toronto, could replace Francis in the rotation if he has a successful rehab start this Friday.

Bowden Francis Rocked in Short Outing

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Bowden Francis allowed seven hits and six earned runs over 1 2/3 innings, falling to 2-7 in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He struck out two, issued two free passes, and hit a batter. It didn't take long for things to go south for the 29-year-old, as he walked Bryson Stott on four pitches to start the game and then yielded back-to-back home runs to Trea Turner and Bryce Harper. All six of the runs against him came in that frame as the Phillies batted around. Another run scored on an error in the second inning after a walk and a single, and that was enough for him to be pulled. Francis hasn't been right since letting up seven earned runs to the Red Sox a month ago, and holds a ghastly 5.84 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in his 12 starts (57 innings). He'll look for better results his next time out against the Twins later this week.

Bowden Francis Struggles In Blowout Loss To Red Sox

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (2-4) faced significant challenges on Tuesday night, surrendering seven earned runs in just three innings in a 10-2 home loss to the Red Sox. He was tagged with his fourth loss of the season. Francis gave up five home runs and struck out only one batter, capping off a tough April. After showing promise as a starter for Toronto last August, Francis now holds a 5.28 ERA over 30 2/3 innings, with opponents batting .274 against him. The Blue Jays will need him to regain his form as they fall behind in the AL East. Francis will look to rebound in his next start on Sunday at home against the Cleveland Guardians.

Bowden Francis Pitches Gem, Loses No-Hitter In The Ninth Inning

Toronto Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis was excellent on Wednesday as his team fell to the New York Mets 6-2. Francis pitched eight no-hit innings until giving up a home run to Fransisco Lindor in the ninth frame. He did not factor into the decision. Still, Francis' line was incredible: he pitched eight innings, gave up one hit, and walked and struck out one. The 28-year-old has been on a tear since returning to the Jays' rotation. In his past seven starts, he is (4-1) with a 1.50 ERA, a 0.44 WHIP, and a 5:46 BB: K in 48 IP. Francis seems to have at least earned a chance to compete for a rotation spot in 2025, and with that, he has increased his fantasy value and draft stock, too. Francis will look to continue his torrid stretch at his next start on Wednesday on the road against the Texas Rangers.

Bowden Francis Dominates Red Sox On Thursday

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Bowden Francis continued his ridiculous run with seven more shutout innings, this time against the Boston Red Sox. Francis once again allowed just one hit while striking out five and walking none. It's been an incredible stretch for the 28-year-old, who has come out of nowhere to become a must-roster pitcher in fantasy. He now has four consecutive outings where he has allowed one run or less over seven-plus innings, and over those four starts he has allowed just six combined hits. If he is still out there in a shallow league, go get him as quickly as possible.
