Toronto Blue Jays' right-hander Jose Berrios (2-2) earned the win on Thursday as the Blue Jays went on to win 12-0 over the Athletics. Berrios brought his best stuff, as he worked six innings, allowing zero runs, two hits, two walks, while punching out nine batters. This was Berrios' best start of the season, and he has now provided the Blue Jays with three straight quality starts. The brilliant outing lowered his season ERA to 3.86, and he now owns a 1.30 WHIP. He remains a middle-of-the-pack fantasy option for fantasy managers, as most of his actual numbers and advanced metrics rank league average across the board. The former 2012 first-round pick is slated to take on a tough Philadelphia Phillies squad in his next matchup, which is tentatively lined up for Wednesday at home.
Jose Berrios Moved Up To Start Series Opener On Monday
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios, who was originally scheduled to start on Tuesday, has been moved up for Monday's series opener at Fenway Park against the division-rival Boston Red Sox. Berrios will take the ball instead of Easton Lucas. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican hurler was beat up for six earned runs on nine hits (three homers) in five innings on Opening Day against the Baltimore Orioles on March 27, but he bounced back in his second start on April 1 against the Washington Nationals to give up only two earned runs while walking three and striking out eight in 5 2/3 frames. It's not a great matchup for DFS purposes -- the Red Sox scored 16 runs in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Sunday night -- but Berrios will also be making two starts this week now that he's been moved up. The two-time All-Star comes into his third start of the year with a 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 10 2/3 innings.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios will be the team's Opening Day starter next Thursday, March 27, against the division-rival Baltimore Orioles at home, according to manager John Schneider. Kevin Gausman has been slow-played during spring training, which is probably why Berrios is getting the nod to start the first game of the year. The 30-year-old veteran's strikeout rate fell to just 19.5 percent last year with Toronto, although he finished with a decent 3.60 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 153 strikeouts and 54 walks in 192 1/3 innings over 32 starts. He's had a solid spring with a 2.35 ERA, 13 strikeouts and four walks in four starts covering 15 1/3 innings pitched. Berrios is no longer a big strikeout guy, which lowers his fantasy floor and ceiling, but he's been as durable as they come for a starting pitcher. We would recommend avoiding him in DFS in a tough first matchup against the O's.
Jose Berrios Earns 16th Win Of The Season In Quality Start
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios tossed seven innings of one-run ball in Saturday's 7-2 victory over the Cardinals, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out four on the way to earning his 16th win of the season. It was the 30-year-old's seventh consecutive quality start and 20th on the season. The 2x All-Star has been good at home, posting a 10-2 record with a 2.69 ERA, and has put together a nice season overall, with a 3.44 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 12.5% K-BB% to go with his 16-9 record.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios tossed a gem in a 3-1 win over the Oakland A's on Friday. Berrios allowed one run on six hits over seven innings while striking out eight and walking one to earn the win. The veteran wound up notching 12 swinging strikes to improve his record to 10-9 on the season. Overall, Berrios has a 3.97 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 111 strikeouts over 142 2/3 innings of work. Even though his strikeouts are down this season, Berrios remains a solid mid-rotation asset in fantasy leagues. He will look to stay hot in his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios was racking up strikeouts during Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Berrios recorded 10 strikeouts while allowing four runs in a no-decision. The long ball continues to haunt Berrios as all the damage in this game came off home runs. Despite that, Berrios was able to miss enough bats with his excellent stuff that it kept his team in the game. He'll take a 3.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 87/29 K/BB ratio into his next start against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios was sharp on the mound during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees. The right-hander allowed two runs while striking out eight batters across seven innings of work in the win. He gave up two hits and walked three batters while earning his seventh win of the season. The home run ball continues to bite him, but outside of that Berrios has been successful. He'll take a 3.38 ERA into his next start against the Houston Astros.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios allowed three runs on five hits across 5 2/3 innings during Monday's 3-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He struck out four batters and issued one walk. It was not the best performance from Berrios as he gave up two solo home runs and needed 105 pitches. The outing interrupted a stretch of five straight quality starts for the right-hander, although he has now surrendered a home run in eight of his past nine appearances. Berrios has still been a productive fantasy arm overall as he has posted a 2.93 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 64:22 K:BB across 86 innings in 2024. There may be some regression in store due to his limited strikeout capabilities and the propensity to give up homers. He is a mid-tier fantasy option against the Cleveland Guardians in his next projected start.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios threw seven innings of one-run ball in Friday's 5-3 win over the Pirates. The righty allowed six hits, no walks, and struck out five in the no-decision. The outing was his fourth straight quality start and it tied him for the league lead with 10. Aside from one poor outing, Berrios has been one of the more consistent pitchers this season, posting a 2.78 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 13.7% K-BB%. The 2x All-Star will get Baltimore at home in his next start on Wednesday.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios was sharp on Saturday but still picked up the loss in Toronto's 2-1 loss to the Tigers. Berrios made just one real mistake on a 2-0 changeup to Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter that Carpenter hit just well enough to sneak out. Berrios didn't give up a single run after that and threw seven innings while recording five strikeouts and giving up seven hits. The 29-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.94 on the season. While his ERA is continuing to stay low, expected stats suggest Berrios has been a bit lucky this season. Fantasy managers and DFS players should take this into consideration if starting Berrios against a solid offense, though he should continue to cruise against subpar hitters. Berrios' next scheduled start is Friday when the Blue Jays will host the Pittsburgh Pirates.
