Jose Berrios Feels Fully Healthy Now

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios is feeling 100 percent healthy in camp right now. According to Mitch Bannon, Berrios said on Monday that he was dealing with a bicep tendon issue in September of last season. This could help explain why Berrios struggled late last season and why he was eventually left off the postseason roster. Heading into camp, there was some uncertainty about whether or not Berrios would be in the starting rotation to begin the 2026 season. Now, Berrios is basically a lock to join the rotation with Shane Bieber (forearm) heading to the injured list to start the regular season. The hope is that a fully healthy Berrios can bounce back after posting mediocre numbers in 2025.

Jose Berrios has "Looked Sharp" This Spring

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios, who has been the team's Opening Day starter in three of the last four seasons, is "once again looking like the pitcher who built the reputation as one of the most reliable workhorses in the sport," according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. Despite Berrios' dip in velocity at the end of last year and a trip to the injured list, he's locked into Toronto's rotation. "Jos is fully healthy. He's looked sharp," manager John Schneider said. "His stuff is back to where it was probably two years ago in terms of velocity and his breaking ball. He changed his breaking ball a bit to make it a little bigger, so I love that guys are trying to evolve a bit, too." The 31-year-old Puerto Rican is looking to bounce back after throwing only 166 innings in 2025 -- his fewest since 2017 with the Twins. Berrios might not have the velocity to blow hitters away anymore, and the mileage on his arm is a concern, but if he can limit walks and keep the ball in the yard more, a bounce-back could be coming.

Jose Berrios Could Shift to the Bullpen

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios might not have a guaranteed spot in the starting rotation to begin the 2026 season. Berrios endured a tough campaign where he finished the regular season on the injured list and was left off the postseason roster. The right-hander finished with a 4.17 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a 138/56 K/BB ratio across 31 games (30 starts) in 2025. His 166.0 innings were his lowest since the shortened 2020 season. The Jays have added Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to the mix this offseason. They'll have Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage returning from last season. It's looking like Berrios could be the odd man out and headed to a swingman type of role in the bullpen. The Jays are still on the hook for $67 million over the next three years, so Berrios will have a role, but it might not be a full-time starter.

Jose Berrios Won't Return This Year

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios (elbow) has resumed throwing, but he will not return for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers if the team can beat the Seattle Mariners on Monday night in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, according to manager John Schneider. Berrios ended the regular season in September on the shelf with inflammation in his right elbow, and he hasn't been able to help the team during their postseason run. The 31-year-old veteran was moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen late in the year, too, with his last appearance out of the bullpen coming on Sept. 24. His last start for the Jays was back on Sept. 16, so if he was available to return for the World Series, it likely would have been in a relief role. Berrios should be ready for spring training next February, barring a setback with his elbow, but it's unclear what his role will be.

Jose Berrios Heading to Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios (elbow) is heading to the 15-day injured list on Thursday with right-elbow inflammation, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. Berrios is en route to getting an MRI exam, which will determine if he'll be available for Toronto in the postseason next month. The 31-year-old veteran Puerto Rican hurler was recently moved from the starting rotation to a relief role, so if he's healthy enough to return if the Blue Jays make a deep run in the playoffs, he'll almost certainly be coming out of the bullpen. Berrios will finish his 2025 season (his fourth full year in Toronto) with a 9-5 record, 4.17 ERA (4.65 FIP), and 1.30 WHIP with 138 strikeouts and 56 walks in 166 innings over 31 appearances (30 starts). Toronto recalled pitcher Paxton Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

Jose Berrios Moving to Bullpen

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios is moving from the starting rotation to the bullpen, manager John Schneider announced. He's losing his spot to the recently promoted Trey Yesavage, who will take on the Kansas City Royals in his second career start on Sunday. Berrios had been penciled in for that game, but the Jays are demoting the 31-year-old as a result of a prolonged slump. After Berrios posted a 5.83 earned-run average in June and a 4.64 ERA in July, he has logged a 5.56 mark in three outings this month. Overall, Berrios has gone 9-5 with a 4.06 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, 135 strikeouts, and 54 walks in 164 innings this season. He's about to enter unfamiliar territory as a reliever, having come out of the bullpen in just one of his 274 career appearances.

Jose Berrios Pushed Back to Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios won't make his scheduled start against the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend. Instead, Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, and Max Scherzer will pitch this weekend. Berrios doesn't appear to be dealing with an injury, but the Jays want to be cautious down the stretch. The right-hander has already thrown over 150 innings this season. They've decided to give Berrios some extra rest and start him against the Cincinnati Reds next week. This will be a more appealing option for fantasy managers than pitching against the red-hot Brewers lineup. Fantasy managers shouldn't be worried about an injury as this appears to be precautionary to limit his innings.

Jose Berrios Tosses Seven Scoreless Innings in Fourth Win

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios (4-3) dominated the Boston Red Sox on Friday, pitching seven shutout frames and striking out eight in a 9-0 win. Berrios scattered four hits and walked one in what was his best start of the season. The 31-year-old has been rock solid for a while now, with quality starts in six of his last seven outings. He holds a 3.26 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and has struck out 89 in 102 IP. While his numbers aren't flashy, Berrios is a workhorse who gets the job done. He is a stabilizer for any fantasy pitching staff and should be started most weeks. His next matchup is against the New York Yankees in Toronto on Wednesday, which will be a tough one. Still, with the way Berrios is pitching right now, it wouldn't be the worst idea to start him.

Jose Berrios Looks Sharp on Saturday

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios looked sharp on the mound during Saturday's outing against the Chicago White Sox. Berrios gave up two hits early, but retired the next 14-of-15 batters he faced. The White Sox weren't able to do much against him as he scored one unearned run in the sixth inning. Berrios tossed 7.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while walking three batters and striking out five in the win. A nice bounce back outing for Berrios who allowed six runs to the Philadelphia Phillies in his last start. Now, he'll get a tough challenge against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in this next outing.

Jose Berrios Lights-Out Against the Athletics

Toronto Blue Jays' right-hander Jose Berrios (2-2) earned the win on Thursday as the Blue Jays went on to win 12-0 over the Athletics. Berrios brought his best stuff, as he worked six innings, allowing zero runs, two hits, two walks, while punching out nine batters. This was Berrios' best start of the season, and he has now provided the Blue Jays with three straight quality starts. The brilliant outing lowered his season ERA to 3.86, and he now owns a 1.30 WHIP. He remains a middle-of-the-pack fantasy option for fantasy managers, as most of his actual numbers and advanced metrics rank league average across the board. The former 2012 first-round pick is slated to take on a tough Philadelphia Phillies squad in his next matchup, which is tentatively lined up for Wednesday at home.
