Addison Barger Expected to Resume Swinging This Weekend

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman/outfielder Addison Barger (ankles) has resumed baseball activities at the team's spring training complex in Florida, according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Barger played catch over the last two days and is expected to resume swinging on Friday or Saturday. The goal is for Barger to resume running by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The 26-year-old was a hero during the team's World Series run last fall, but he got off to a rough start in 2026 before landing on the 10-day injured list with sprained ankles. In a small sample size of just eight games, Barger went 1-for-19 (.053) at the plate with a double, two RBI, a run scored, three walks, and six strikeouts in 23 plate appearances. Barger will not come off the IL when he's eligible on Friday, but depending on how his rehab goes, he could be an option to rejoin the big-league roster for the start of their next homestand on Friday, April 24.

Addison Barger Sidelined From Baseball Activity Through Monday

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder/third baseman Addison Barger (ankles) will stay sidelined from baseball activity through Monday's off day, manager John Schneider told Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Barger's left ankle is more sore than his right ankle, but he's believed to be making progress. Barger was placed on the 10-day injured list with soreness in both of his ankles, and he's unlikely to return to the team when he's eligible to be reinstated on April 16. His ankle injuries aren't believed to be overly serious, though, so barring a setback once he resumes baseball activities, we'd expect him to be back in Toronto before the end of April. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter was likely affected by his ankles in his first eight games, as he had just one hit (a double) in his first 23 plate appearances with two RBI, three walks, and six stolen bases.

Blue Jays Hopeful Addison Barger Won't be Out Long

The Toronto Blue Jays are hopeful that outfielder/third baseman Addison Barger (ankle) will need the minimum of 10 days on the injured list after spraining his left ankle running out a ground ball in Chicago, according to MLB.com. Toronto placed Barger on the IL on Tuesday. The 26-year-old might benefit from a little time off early in the season, as he had gotten off to a very slow start at the plate before injuring his ankle. In eight games, he has just one hit (a double) in 23 plate appearances with two RBI, a run scored, three walks, and six strikeouts. Barger hit .243/.301/.454 with 21 home runs, 74 RBI, 61 runs scored, and four stolen bases in 135 regular-season games in 2025 in his first full season in the majors before becoming a postseason hero in the team's run to the World Series last fall. It's still very early in 2026, but Barger's fantasy stock is trending down after his slow start and then his ankle injury.

Addison Barger is Heading to the Injured List

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman/outfielder Addison Barger (ankle) was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 6. This news comes after Barger suffered a left ankle sprain during Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox. The Jays are hopeful that it's a minimal stay on the IL for Barger. Jays' manager John Schneider said Barger is trending in the right direction, but he's not eligible to rejoin the team until April 16. In a corresponding move, infielder Tyler Fitzgerald has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. The expectation is that Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw are likely to gain the most playing time while Barger is sidelined.

Blue Jays to Make a Decision on Addison Barger Soon

Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports that a decision is coming on Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Addison Barger (ankles), who left Sunday's game early against the Chicago White Sox with discomfort in both of his ankles. "We'll probably figure it out today, just to see what he can or can't do," said manager John Schneider. Barger has been walking with a limp since being pulled early, and he's not in Monday's starting lineup at the Rogers Centre in a World Series rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Schneider said on Monday that the 26-year-old is "trending in the right direction," but the team isn't ruling out a stint on the injured list. If Barger is forced to the 10-day IL, infielder Tyler Fitzgerald could take his place on the active roster after Toronto recently acquired him in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. It's been a rough go in 2026 so far for Barger, who was a postseason hero for the Jays, as he has just one hit in 23 plate appearances with two RBI, three walks, and six strikeouts in his first eight games played.

Addison Barger Exits with Ankle Injury

Toronto Blue Jays infielder/outfielder Addison Barger (ankle) was forced to make an early exit from Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Barger departed the game in the bottom of the sixth inning due to bilateral ankle discomfort. Before exiting the game, Barger went 0-for-3 at the plate. Jays' manager John Schneider said Barger could return as early as Monday's game versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jesus Sanchez took over in right field during Sunday's game. The expectation is that Sanchez could see a few starts if Barger does miss any time. It doesn't sound like fantasy managers should be worried about Barger missing an extended period of time from this injury.

Addison Barger Sees Slump Continue, Quickly Losing Fantasy Value

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Addison Barger is off to a rough start to the 2026 season, as he's yet to record a hit across 16 plate appearances. The left-handed hitting Barger has also been out of Toronto's starting lineup each of the team's first two games against left-handed starting pitchers. Barger had a breakout year in 2025, hitting .243/.301/.454 with 21 home runs, 74 RBI, 61 runs scored, and four stolen bases across 502 plate appearances. The 26-year-old posted an excellent 50.9% hard-hit rate and slugged .480 against right-handed pitching. Early in 2026, Barger has struck out in 37.5% of his plate appearances and owns a hard-hit rate of just 25%. While it's obviously still very early in the season, Barger could be at risk of losing even more playing time given the presence of quality bench outfielders Davis Schneider and Nathan Lukes in Toronto.

Addison Barger on the Bench Again on Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Addison Barger is on the bench again for Tuesday's game against the visiting Colorado Rockies at the Rogers Centre, according to MLB.com. Barger will begin on the bench for the second time in the team's five games to begin the 2026 season, and he's currently hitless in his first 15 plate appearances of the year with two RBI, two walks, and five strikeouts in four games played. Nathan Lukes will get the start in right field and will bat fifth for Toronto against Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner. It's not time to panic just yet for Barger's fantasy managers, but it's a pretty rough start. In his first full major-league season in 2025, Barger hit .243/.301/.454 with a .756 OPS, 21 home runs, 74 RBI, and 61 runs scored in 135 games. He was outstanding in 17 postseason games, going 22-for-60 (.367) with three homers and nine RBI, perhaps inflating his 2026 fantasy value in redraft leagues. Lukes has never faced Feltner in his career.

Addison Barger Moving to Outfield Full Time?

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Addison Barger will play most of his games in right field in 2026, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. Meanwhile, Nathan Lukes and Davis Schneider will likely form a platoon in left. Barger split his time almost evenly between the outfield and third base in his second year in the big leagues with Toronto in 2025, but the Jays have a bigger need in the outfield now that Anthony Santander (shoulder) is injured again. How much he plays against lefties will be the big question after he slashed an unremarkable .217/.270/.337 against southpaws last year. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter limped to the finish line and finished with a .243/.301/.454 slash line with a .756 OPS, 21 home runs, 74 RBI, 61 runs scored, and four steals in 460 at-bats during the regular season. Barger was a postseason hero, finished third on the team in homers, and regularly hit the ball on the screws when he made contact. He has a solid floor in at least the strong side of a platoon, and there is breakout potential if he can improve against lefties.

Addison Barger Coming Off a Busy Season in the Majors

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman/outfielder Addison Barger endured a busy 2025 season in the majors, and he'll remain in a central role as the Jays take the field in 2026. Barger debuted midway through the 2024 campaign, so last year was his first full season in the majors. He played in a total of 135 games, slashing .243/.301/.454 with 21 homers, 74 RBI, 107 wRC+, a 7.2% walk rate, and a 24.1% strikeout rate. While he struck out more than the Jays and fantasy managers would prefer, he certainly made up for it with his power and above-average wRC+. Heading into 2026, we should expect similar offensive contributions from the 26-year-old. FanGraphs' latest ZiPS projections estimate that he'll slug 21 homers with a 109 wRC+, while bumping his walk rate up to 8.5% and his strikeout rate down to 23.2%. There's a lot of confidence in the bat, but a bit more uncertainty surrounding his defense -- specifically, where he'll play. Barger split last season between third base and right field, but the hot corner now belongs to free agent signing Kazuma Okamoto. Barger should get right field reps against left-handed pitching, but he could head to the bench in favor of Davis Schneider when there's a righty on the mound. These questions create a little bit of murkiness around an otherwise very encouraging profile for Barger, who ranks #105 among hitters and #48 among outfielders in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball draft rankings for 2026.
