Dodgers
Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Brent Honeywell (fingernail) was placed on the 15-day IL on Thursday with a cracked right fingernail. It is another tough loss for a pitching staff that has gone through the wringer this year in terms of injuries. Honeywell has been a quality relief option that can pitch multiple innings and can be used in any situation, so it'll be tough for the Dodgers to replace come playoffs. The severity of the injury is unknown, but he will be out until at least part of the way through the Wild Card series due to his placement on the IL. Anthony Banda was activated off the IL and is taking Honeywell's spot, so the news isn't all bad for the Dodgers.

Brent Honeywell Records First Save
The Los Angeles Dodgers turned to relief pitcher Brent Honeywell in Thursday's victory against the division rival San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers turned to their main late-inning options, Daniel Hudson, Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia and Blake Treinen in innings six through eight, leaving Honeywell for the ninth inning. Honeywell has pitched to a 0.79 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this season, but managers shouldn't expect many more save opportunities for him in the future. Even with Evan Phillips struggling lately, Hudson, Vesia and Treinen remain ahead of Honeywell in most games. For now, Honeywell can safely remain on the waiver wire.

Brent Honeywell Starting In Bullpen Day For Dodgers
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Brent Honeywell, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, will make his Dodgers debut and serve as the opener in Sunday's series finale against the hosting Detroit Tigers in a bullpen game for LA. Manager Dave Roberts said that Honeywell might be built up to throw around 40 pitches on Sunday after arriving in Detroit around midnight. It's a sign of how badly the Dodgers rotation is hurting right now heading into next week's All-Star break. The 29-year-old Honeywell doesn't have a terrible matchup but is likely to only go a few innings and isn't recommended as a fantasy streamer. The former Rays top prospect only threw 3 1/3 relief innings for Pittsburgh this year and allowed an earned run with two walks and one strikeout. If he remains on the big-league roster in the second, he'll operate in a long-relief role.

Pirates Designate Brent Honeywell For Assignment
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander Brent Honeywell for assignment on Friday, according to sources. Honeywell didn't even make it a full week on the Pirates' big-league roster after they selected his contract from the minors last weekend. The 29-year-old former top prospect of the Tampa Bay Rays couldn't stay healthy early in his career and is close to washing out of the league entirely at this point. In 3 1/3 innings of relief for Pittsburgh this year, he gave up an earned run while walking two and striking out one. He went 1-3 at Triple-A Indianapolis with a 4.85 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with seven saves, 33 strikeouts and 17 walks in 39 innings pitched. After coming up as a starter earlier in his career, Honeywell has become a reliever and could be headed back to Indy if he clears waivers.

Brent Honeywell Agrees With Pirates On Minors Pact
Free-agent right-hander Brent Honeywell agreed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a minor-league deal on Wednesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Honeywell would earn a $1.25 million salary in the major leagues in 2024. The 28-year-old former second-rounder was once one of the Tampa Bay Rays' top pitching prospects, but injuries have since derailed his career and shifted him to a relief role. He spent the 2023 campaign with the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox, going a combined 2-4 with a 4.82 ERA (5.62 FIP) and 1.45 WHIP with 23 walks and 45 strikeouts in his first full major-league season. Honeywell should eventually resurface in the big leagues in the Pirates' bullpen, but he could begin the year at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Padres Agree With Brent Honeywell Jr. Friday
The San Diego Padres and free-agent right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. agreed to a split major-league deal on Friday, according to sources. Honeywell will make $725,000 if he's in the big leagues and $200,000 in the minor leagues. The 27-year-old former top prospect with the Tampa Bay Rays spent the 2022 in the minors with the Oakland Athletics, going 0-3 with a 7.08 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, 24 strikeouts and eight walks in 20 1/3 frames over 13 appearances (two starts) at Single-A Stockton and Triple-A Las Vegas. Honeywell still has interesting strikeout upside, but he just needs to remain healthy in order to have a shot at sticking on the Friars major-league roster as starting/relief depth.

Brent Honeywell Jr. Reinstated From 60-Day Injured List
Oakland Athletics pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list and then outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas. The oft-injured hurler will continue rehabbing in the minors and has a small chance of being called up before the regular season is up.

Brent Honeywell Jr. Allows Three Runs In Latest Rehab Start
Oakland Athletics right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. (elbow) gave up three earned runs on five hits (one homer allowed) while walking one and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings in his minor league rehab outing for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. The 27-year-old has a rough 14.73 ERA in just 3 2/3 innings in two appearances at Las Vegas, so the A's will probably want to see some better results before considering having him join the major league club. Once a top prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays, Honeywell's career continues to be set back by injuries. In his first three big-league appearances last year in Tampa, he allowed four earned runs while walking three and striking out four in 4 1/4 innings.

Brent Honeywell Jr. To Make Another Rehab Start Tuesday
Oakland Athletics right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. (elbow) has already made a pair of minor league rehab outings with Single-A Stockton, and he'll make his next appearance with Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Though the A's still view Honeywell as a starter in the long term, manager Mark Kotsay said that Honeywell will likely pitch out of the bullpen for the team this year if he's able to properly build up his workload to return to the majors before the season is over. He's been dealing with a stress reaction in the back of his right elbow since late March in spring training and has yet to make his debut with the A's. The 27-year-old has allowed a run on four hits while walking one and striking out three in three innings in his two rehab starts for Stockton.

Brent Honeywell Jr. Will Start Rehab Assignment Tuesday
Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. (elbow) will begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Low-A Stockton on Tuesday. The 27-year-old has been out all season with a stress reaction in his right elbow but he's inching his way towards a 2022 debut sometime in September. He pitched in a simulated game on Saturday and will keep progressing in his rehab, barring any setbacks.
